I was going through my fifth playthrough and i was watching the intro where shep was being rebuilt.....when it struck me! .. what if the reapers were not built by a race, but rather they were organics themselves at one point whos technology allowed them to become what they are now.
Here are the reasons why i came to believe this:
1. Sovereign tells the commander that "we just simply are"
2. Sovereign also says that the reapers are the pinnicle of evolution, meaning they evolved from something
3. Harbinger consistantly tells shepard that the reapers are humanitys genetic destiny
So what i thought was that maybe the reapers were the first space faring race in the milky way galaxy, but, their technology reached a point where it caused them to become slightly more cybernetic until a point in which they added everything to themselves (FTL drives, Kinetic Barriers ect.) I mean hell id love an FTL drive attached to my back....
Now they have reached the point where they are unable to breed and that maybe their race is slowley dying out, so they have done some super mathmatical calculations in order to determine the number of years they must harvest a galaxy in order to keep their numbers stable

Well, then they were built...they just did the building themselves.

We have seen a Reaper being built. So we at least know they can be built. It is possible that some original creator race used their own genetic/biological material to create the first Reapers, seeing them as a step forward in their evolution. That would still make them constructs, deigned by a planning mind.
