I'm about to start my Insanity playthrough.
Would I be able to use my level 30 Soldier, switch to Insanity, and just start a new game or would I have to use my ME1 import or a new character?
Also what's your prefered class for Insanity?

You can use both ME1 and ME2 chars and pick Insanity when starting a new game.

My prefered class is Vanguard by far!

Yes you can use your level 30 soldier as long as the difficulty is set to insanity from the beginning. Prepare to die on the Garrus recruitment mission, though.

I'd like to ask:

If you start a NG+ with your ME2 character, are you still able to change his/her class?

You won't get very much challenge if you play insanity with a level 30 soldier except one ou two hard spots.

Sentinel is interesting to play as long as you don't have the supah-killah-snipah-rifle ( you'll understand when you find it )

The vanguard is good if you don't care about doing the same fight 10 times in a row at the begining.
But once you know the class better, it will become really interesting to play.

I don't know about the engineer. I plan to try with a biotic.

As long as i remember, you can only tweak the appearance... not change the class :( ...
So you can't try every class starting from level 30 ... you have to do it all over again.

On the contrary, starting a new game + with a level 30 ME2 character on insanity is significantly harder than starting as a low level character on insanity. All enenies are scaled to level 30 characters, but you dont have the +damage/damage mitigation upgrades a lv 30 would normally have.  Much less interesting as well, as you miss out on most of the rewards system of leveling your character and finding new gear.

Start a new game + on insanity if you want the *ultimate* challenge the game has to offer.  If you just want to get through it for your achievement medal, start as a low level character again.

I heard that only the beginning is more difficult. As you progress further it's about the same as if you had started from scratch.

Yes, of course theres a break even point.  But probably the first half of the game will be significantly more difficult than it would otherwise.  You can't get the bulk of the upgrades until after Horizon.

If you start a NG+ as a level 30 soldier the game is hell on earth until Horizon basically, then it's smooth sailing.
