At some point in the ruined cathedral near the beginning of the quest, I found a black pearl. After several play throughs I haven't figured out what it was for. Does anyone know?

Take the Black Pearl (watch out for Barbossa trying to steal it) and the Taper to the Brazier in the front hall and light it. It gives you another codex entry.

I read somewhere you can also use it to trade with the hermit in the Brecilian forest. Not tested that yet - anyone else ?

The Black Pearl definitely can be traded to the Mad Hermit - tested. (Of course, after I'd traded for all the items I had Zevran stick his arm in the hole and pull out the ring to provoke him into attacking, then killed the deranged old blood mage for the XP.)

I think you only need the Taper to get the Codex.

Strange, that didn't work for me. I saved the pearl just for the hermit (because I don't do Cammen's quest and I want to bring the scarf back and keep Athras' reward, so I'm usually awefully short on stuff for trading with him), but the dialogue option wasn't available (although the pearl was in my inventory, with the quest items).
I thought the wiki was wrong about this, but now that you confirmed it too, I'll have to try again.

It says it's a Gold Ring, but don't be fooled. It does have a +1 Con bonus.
