I can't say there was much of a learning curve to DA:O. The combat controls were almost identical to KOTOR. At least on 360. The pause/play was even a part of KOTOR, only to get it, you had to switch enemies, where as in DA:O you can actually just pause it and go about your business.

Ahh okay never played Kotor or ME, did play NWN 2 and the subsequent expansions, but found I didn't like some of the expacs.

I'm not frustrated. You said I've insulted you and every other person on here who didn't beat DA:O in 13 minutes, so I decided that I would give you what you want. Here it is. Now as for DA:O Awakening, I will not be purchasing this because I'm afraid the 15-20 hours will actually be 4 million to everyone but me because I am endowed with super human gaming skills and I will complete this game before the opening credits can finish rolling. Now that I am on topic, I can leave this thread without getting a nasty PM :-)

Sorry about that, I'll clarify some...yeah they considered it a hit from when the sale returns started coming in. But (and this was on a thread in the old forums), last year the EA CEO essentially called DA:O a "niche game" to the shareholders and that they had little commercial expectation for it. That since Bioware was almost finished with production, it would be green-lit, but they looked to other products from the "Bioware Division" to make profit (specifically, the Star Wars MMO, I would guess).

There was no real expectation of serious profit from the EA marketing side for an old-school single player fantasy RPG. It was more or less written off as saying, "Look, this is their passion. It's what they do. Let them finish it."

Then it becomes a hit, and here comes the suits.

Just out of curiosity, can you (or anyone) point me in the direction of this conference call/transcript/source? I'd be interested to hear it, out of pure curiosity.

And, as an aside, count me as another very experienced CRPG player who spent over 100 hours on my first play through without any particular difficulties moving forward in combat or elsewhere. Some of us just enjoy speaking to all of the NPCs in extreme depth, reading all the codices, exploring every niche of every map, and so forth.

This...I take my time, after all there are many reasons to play through again, why would I rush.   Currently on 14th play-through and still don't have all the achievements.  And...I am still finding stuff that I overlooked somehow.    Talking to npcs with no exclamation mark over their heads...sometimes nets you another quest.

My only frustration is wondering how come I can't hit level 25.    I do everything I possibly can, including running across the map multiple times to attempt to trigger all "ambushes"  (encounters).

I absolutely refuse to use cheats, walk-throughs or any other kind of "hand-holding device".    I also play in "real time"...I don't pause, ..I have my tactics all set up, my group protects each other..etc.   I do ambushes ..(my fave hehe)  My current time taken on a complete start to finish run is around 80 to 83 hours.   But like I said, the first time..was 110.    So for me, yes there was a learning curve.    I pretty much came straight from playing MMOs on line..for years and years.   (NO I AM NOT A WOWITE...lol)

Hours? I think I would've had a hard time protesting the charge of "idling" if it was for "hours" no? Come on.

No, 5 mins or so, and that's at the long end. And that's because shutting down the game then coming back and reloading would take LONGER on a PC. And no, it's not a routine thing. Not even enough to add an hour.

Stop trying to assume you know how other people play. Alright? Can we just let that rest? Or do you have to keep trying to judge other people from the other side of a monitor?

Again, I haven't had a playthrough LESS than 70 hours yet. That's just the way I play the game. Deal with it. I don't "want" speed runs. And I *never* skip cutscenes. I'll escape through dialogues occasionally, but rarely. To me it ruins the experience of playing to cut through stuff like that. That's me. As I've repeatedly said, everyone plays an RPG differently. Don't assume you understand what other people do.

I get how some people may think Awakenings may come in short. I've expressed my concerns about the expansion at length on this and other threads. But the whole, "I'm so much better at the game because i played it in 30 hrs, woot!" line was rubbish and unnecessary. And trying to make yourself into a victim when you launched the attacks was beyond absurd.

Okay first.  Dude, how about you chill the f out.  When have I EVER judged someone on here about the way they play?  I have asked questions.  I asked if people were letting the game run on pause while they were away.  Get off my case.  So sorry I asked a question here.  Woah excuse me all to hell.  Next time I need to ask a question I'll run it past you to check to see if I'm judging anyone.  That okay with you?  2nd, I explained how I attained my faster run times for the person on here who is calling me a cheat, liar, and fraud.  Whether you care or not, I don't care.  And at this point, god himself could confirm I beat DA:O in 5000 hours and that guy would say god lies.  Only some screen shot from my XB360 is going to "convince" him.  But as I said before, I'm sure he'd come up with some pixel that looked off and claim it was a fraud.  I will just allow the fact that other people here have "claimed" to have beaten it as fast, or faster than I serve as proof that I have done it as well.  And if you can quote me where I ran people down for beating it faster, then go through and get the quote, because I've already said, the one comment I made was about whether I was "just that good", or people were that bad, and it was written as a joking line.  You're the one that is all over my case ever since.  I get it, you didn't think it was funny, now ****** off.  Yes, I beat it faster than you.  Does that make me better?  I never said that, YOU'RE the one putting those words in my mouth.

Umm, no, you're the one who said, more than once on this thread, that those who took longer than you were obviously have problems in combat or had a "learning curve" with the game. Not me. I've never asked you to produce time stamps. I even agreed with Wishpig when he noted achievement uploading isn't as flawless as some believe on the website.

You *still* cursed at me and have hurled insults and conducted yourself in a swinish fashion throughout the thread. I've never judged you, your motives, or accused you of saying anything false. But if you cannot carry on a conversation in a civil manner, your actions can and should be judged as boorish. Is that clear enough for you?

All I have asked throughout this thread is people not assume there is a one-sized fits all style for playing a role-playing game. I do not see what that ought to be too hard a position for others to accept.

And to tell others to "chill out" while throwing around profanity ought to be self-evidently counterproductive. Now, are you ready to have a civil discourse, or are we done?

The XBox version is way, way easier. So combat is much quicker. Combat is most of the game. The PC version takes longer to finish than the XBox version because combat takes longer. The reason the console version is easier is presumably to balance for the awful controls it has.

Me too. I finished DA:O at 123 hours. And I don't get how anyone could've played it first time in under 70 like some claim. At least not on the PC. *shrugs* It sounds like the standard hours estimate for an expansion, which I have always come in at least 50% higher than.

Because some people are not autistic and have normal reading and playing speed. In 120 hours, I can easily beat DA three times, solo on nightmare.

Yes, pretty much you only have control over one character at a time, sifting through the radial dial is a pain (and awesome when characters won't listen to what you tell them to do, aka ALL BERSERKERS).  So basically you are encouraged to run in and kill things.  Even playing a mage is quicker.

Yes, yes, another dramatic e-thug, flinging threats on a gaming forum, how cute. I am completely terrified of some fat nerd getting mad that I hurt his feelings online... oh wait, no I'm not.

just saying one day it will bite you in the ass, and when it does, please let me know so I can watch :)

By the way, I find it fairly ironic that you can't even spell "intelligence" when using it in your quote. Not to mention using Asimov quotes screams pseudo-intellectual to me.

judging from his name, it's safe to say he's 12 years old and still can't beat easy level. No one really gives a **** if you can beat nightmare solo. What's with you people? Do you guys think these achievements mean anything? It's not like you get paid to play the game. It's a nerdy computer game. And the fact you are calling us nerds when you are playing the same game speaks alot about yourself.

You shouldn't be playing a rpg of all games. That alone makes you a loser. It makes no difference if you can beat nightmare solo in 10 hours. You are still a loser. The fact you say you can do it in 10 hours means you are insecure about yourself for playing computer games, and need to justify that you are cooler than the rest of us. You are no cooler than the rest of us. People who play computer games are losers, I don't care if you have a wife and kids. You still are. You are only cool if you stay up all night drinking at some trendy nightclub, then puking in a gutter afterwords (and only then if it's daylight when you get out). OK that last part might have some sarcasm in it, beware.

I loved Dragon Age Origins... it took me just over 90 hours to complete the game... and i have Awakening pre-ordered. I'm looking foward to it and future installments in the Dragon Age series. =)

I read thru the many posts in this thread and came to the conclusion that this argument is FAIL.  Why?  You have someone complaining that the expansion does not contain enough hours for the $40 price tag.... then turn around and types THIS....

"Did I go and speak to EVERY NPC in the game?  No, and why would I?  If someone truly feels the need to speak to every single person in the game, no matter how insignificant, that's their perrogative.  Obviously you have way more time to spend on just 1 game than I, and most sane person I would say."

Sometimes i swear people complain just to have something to complain about. lol

for the record, it took me 78 hours. But alot of time was waiting for loading screens due to the memory bug. And going back and forth because quests send you everywhere. And after you visited like 3 or 4 locations, you get another quest asking you to visit the same 3 or 4 locations yet again! So back to Ozrimar, outide the tower, etc. Lots of travelling in this game. And that includes walking. Walking took up a majority over my 78 hours. As I don't know a way to access the world travel screen from deep within Ogrimar. It requires you to go outside the city before you can world travel. Which means alot of walking.

So yeah you can call me slow. But it's due to my inefficiency in doing my quests all at the same time (I didn't read any walkthrus so I couldn't be efficient in my travels). It's not due to my lack of skill (other than organizational skill). I admit, I'm not very organized.

I'm making my complaints based on their stated times. It's possible my memory is decieving me. But I seem to recall the XP's for NWN 1 being 20 to 30 hours of gameplay, and they were $10 cheaper.

Bioware has not released any solid information regarding the "stated time" of Awakening; this is all based on one review and a lot of conjecture.

That said, NWN 1 was released, what, 8 years ago? Of course the expansion packs were $10 cheaper.

And I could beat the game in Koine Greek, Biblical Hebrew, German, and French as well as English if I desired. And as far as my reading speed goes, I was reading college level works in the 3rd grade before you were born. Now, did you *really* want to got there?
