What exactly is the lore behind the Orlesian occupation of Ferelden? I haven't read the books.

I know that initially The Howes themselves supported the Orlesians so I am sure that somewhere it would be possible to have a decenting Cousland or Mage that would have supported the Orlesians. Esspecially if Thomas is in DA:A and that is a chat option.

SPOILER:

The orlesian king of Ferelden, Meghren, was a sadist, rumoured to only have been put on the fereldan throne by the orlesian emperor, to get him as far away from the court as possible.
It is clear that Meghren at least blieved it so. He saw Ferelden as punishment and spend his time occupied with wishing he was back in Val Royeaux and finding ways to amuse himself, which often included causing physical pain to people who gave him an excuse.
He was quick to confiscate the lands of people, especially freeholders, as the status of freeholder does not exist in Orlais.
Orlais, is an even stronger two-class society than Ferelden. The nobility has abo****e power over the commoners. Vaughn in the city elf origin is actually a picture book example of the way a chevalier could have treated fereldans during the occupation. You can also talk to an orlesian merchant in the Denerim market place, and she'll tell you a bit about chevaliers.
The orlesians stole, raped, murdered and bled the land. And with Meghren as king, it was only these kind of nobls who could hold on to their titles and lands. For he was no kinder to his orlesian subjects. (and quite a few orlesians joined the rebels in the last three years of the rebelion).

I hate the idea of legal rape (Chevaliers). I would spend the whole game wishing that I could kill anyone like Oblivion. By the end Orlais would find themselves without a cavalry.

I am actually lookign forward to playing an Orlesian. I am not sure it will happen, but I hope that the first part of the game, or at least the very first scene or part is in Orlais. I want to feel sophisticated and superior compared to the barbaric Fereldens.

I got the vibe that the 'Orlesian Warden' was from the group of Wardens based in Orlais, not necessarily of Orlesian origin. He or she could be of any nationality, even from Ferelden.

From a RP perspective, you can take a new Orlesian warden in more than one ways, which just adds to the replay-ablity for me so I am actually looking forward to it. But for those that don't, import is your friend

Oh, my friend, you won't believe how much I despise Chevaliers. I hope we'll get to meet some of these scumbags in the game. Heads will roll and blood will flow...

I agree, Duncan was an Orlesian warden, but born in Highever.  Besides you can play as an Orlesian warden Elf or Dwarf can't you?  Its not the group thats bad, just the individual.  Besides its not like Fereldnn was short on racist and corrupt leaders themselves

Yes, the Chevaliers are scum. No wonder Loghain didn't want to let them into Fereldan. After speaking to Liselle, the perfume seller in Denerim market, he got my full approval for his stance on no Orlesians in Fereldan.



However, as Liselle says, life in Orlais is hard for the commoners - it's the nobility that is corrupt. If your warden has a commoner background, then I might be able to identify with him a little.



Still, since I'm English, and Orlais is analogous to our longtime enemy, France, I will have a tough time playing an Orlesian character. (Not that I really hate the French but, well, you know there's a centuries-old rivalry there. Agincourt ftw!)

Orlwesians enslaved foreldian, and I hate them.. I don't morally want to make an orlesian charater.. I thorroughly dislike Olais.

I'm not to keen on the Orlesians myself. hate their accents, their silly over the top fashion senses, their frivolous culture, ect. Better a country that smells of wet dog then a country of painted up fops that try to cover their foul odor with obscene amounts of perfume. Thankfully, we don't have to play one.



Though I might be tempted to make a dwarf with a French accent. That would be something to see.

You don't need to be in Orlais to meet scumbags like that. Play the "city elf" orgin and you'll see that perhaps nobles from Ferelden ain't that much better.

But here is the thing. your talking from a moral stand point and some people dont agree with your morals.
just because your from a bad country dosnt mean your bad. he could have been born there.
Im from the united states and alot of people hate the US,why? because we do stupid stuff alot. now does that mean im a bad person? no i think im a fine person, and judging peopleby country isnt cool.

Iam fascinated by every aspect of the game. And will probably play a Orlesian grey warden.
