When I try to take a power off the hotbar, the game crashes. It doesn't crash when I put powers on it, but it crashes when I try to take them off.

I'm using a disk based copy with the latest patch (1.01 I believe) and am using Windows Vista 64bit.

And not sure if describing my PC hardware will help, but better safe than sorry:

Display Adaptor: ATI Radeon HD 3800 series (Specifically the Radeon HD 3850)
VRAM: 512 MB
Processor(s): 2 Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     E7200  @ 2.53GHz
RAM: 2 GB
Sound Adaptor: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)
Driver Version: 6.0.6002.18005

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Ultimate  Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002)
DirectX Version: DirectX 10.0  (Nov2008)

Again, the problem is that whenever I try to take a power off the hotbar. I can do it fine within the first 30 minuts or so of starting the game, but after that the game crashes. It happens everywhere, and it happens anytime I try to remove a power.

Any help would be appreciated.

It happened to me always on the vanilla (non patched) version, only in combat situations, while dragging out a power off the quick slot bar.

Don't know about the latest patch.. I still have to try it (I'm busy doing my playthroughs on the Xbox 360 since I've bought the game for my brother too for the Xbox 360 :P)

It crashes for me when out of combat as well. And if it happened in the pre-patched version I don't think its to blame.

I discovered if you try to move an activated power that's passive (like ammo) or are in combat, it can bug out and cause your game to lock up. Until this bug is fixed the best bet is to deactivate passive powers and change your bars outside of combat.

Happens to me as well, it will also select the incorrect skill from the wheel at times if you try to bypass the hotbar reshuffle. Generally If you reload the game before doing the reshuffle, it will not crash... pointless if you are after quick reconfiguration of the hotbar on the fly, without a downtime. The longer the game has been running the greater the chance of this happening. Restart ME2, log into the game and the hotbar can be reshuffled without issue, give it an hour or 2 and it will crash when you try.

The hotbar just seems completely bugged out to me. I've had powers duplicate while moving them, I'll go to move power 5 and it moves power 2, or it just locks up and crashes the game. This happens both in and out of combat for me, though not as often out of combat. I don't even consider touching it until I'm out of combat and have saved the game.

I'm having the same sort of issue, ME2 via steam, 50% chance that the game will lock up & freeze/crash out whenever I try to use the barrier power from my hotbar. Doesn't crash when I use the powers for my squad. Even tried the latest (beta 196.34) driver from the nvidia website, which claims to be optimised for ME2. Tried it with & without the HDR, Bloom, Anisotropics, Shadows, - makes no difference.
The unfortunate thing is that I've now done the same combat routine trying to get across the bridge on the assassin mission at least half a dozen times, and still can't get to a place where I can save the game before it crashes out.
I understand why there is no capability for a quicksave in combat, but when the repeated combat is because the game is crashing, not me being killed, it is really frustrating.
Anyone have any more ideas?

I would suggest just using the power from by hitting the left shift, or whatever you set the button to bring up your powers is.Unless thats what you were talking about when you said hotbar, in which case all I can suggest is to not use barrier :/

Crappy I know, but I don't know what else could help.

Hi Zero50, Thanks for te reply.

I found that the crash seems to be initiated when I use the mouse to select the power, so I tried remapping them to be more friendly (to my remembering them!).

Bingo! I can use all the powers by just using the Hotkey they are now associated with (1,2,3,etc).

Probably quite obvious, butit's taken me a while to work that one out, and get into the habit of using them instead of the L-shift + mouse select. Playing this way I played with all the gfx settings turned up for about 3 hours, with NO issues.

Hope this helps someone out there.

strange that Bioware didn't take care of it with the first patch.

after i have installed the patch 1.01 it happens a lot less but still does from time to time. could it be windows 7 related?

Upgrading to Windows 7 caused an unrelated issue for me, but the hotbar crash was around while I was still playing ME2 on my XP installation. I mostly avoid the problem by dragging things cleanly off the bar instead of trying to swap spots.

I'm on XP and have had hotbar crashes. In general, the number of people having hotbar crashing problems (as well as the issue of trying to drag one power and ending up with another power several slots over) is great enough that I'm pretty sure there is a glitch in the game itself to be blamed, even if it only surfaces on some machines.

Would you guys mind reporting the type of mouse you use and if you have any mouse utilities installed?

I have an Evoluent Vertical Mouse (USB), but I'm just using XP's standard "HID-compliant mouse" driver.

I ran into that problem once and I dunno if its related, but my internet connection that day was kinda wonky. Whenever the crash occurred I noticed my internet would be down. I knew it was down since I couldn't get on the Cerberus Network. When the internet came back on a few minutes later, the crashing stopped and I could drag skills in and out of the hotbar.

Something similar also happened with me while playing Dragon Age. When I get logged out due to my internet being wonky again, the game would sometimes just crash to the desktop, but sometimes nothing would happen even when I get logged out while playing.

PC gaming and its almost infinite amount of quirks.....

Yeesh, I would hope the EA account coding isn't that finicky.

In my case, I did my whole second playthrough not logged in to my EA account, so I doubt that's it for me - or indeed the tactical hud crashes in general. Especially as that playthrough was when this problem started really cropping up. (That part would be purely behavior-based - I was playing on Insanity and so was spending a lot more time in the Tac Hud than in my first playthrough on Normal.)

Hi Mallissin,

My mouse is a Roccat Kone (version 2) & uses the latest drivers off their website.

System is Vista 64 Bit, so I'm inclined to think it isn't system related, but something to do with the game itself.

Hope this helps.

Same for me Ive had it happen occasionally, its getting rather annoying. Also my hotbar seems to "reset" itself to a previous spec. For example running through most missions now I only have 4 items on the bar, charge, lift etc. but when i started the game I had unity and ammo on it as well. After a reload at any point it sometimes reverts to this old set up automatically. Have latest patch installed.

This bug seems to be what I'm experiencing, as obscure as it is. It started when I did Legion's loyalty mission, and all of the three crashes happened when I used Overload in combat. I think the problem has to do with the shift menu somehow. Mind you this was after about 20 hours of gaming without a single crash - I was a little confused as to why this would present itself all of a sudden.  I've only had about three to four crashes so far, so I'm not crying too much about it, especially after experiecing the dual-core nightmare with my old system in ME1.

Although, I'm not ruling out an issue with my video card or system just yet, because it is relatively new and the GPU might be acting up somehow, but it seems game-related in the way it crashes in a certain instance of using the shift-menu.

Another thing to note, is these crashes happened after I installed the DLC content as well.  Might be connected in some way.  I have no idea, but I was little sad to see a crash after I was so happy -not- to see any for about 20 hours straight.
