What does "harden Alistair" mean?

If you want to "harden" alistair, you only get one chance(that I know of). If you miss it, then just forget about it.

In denerim after you talk to his sister you'll talk to Alistair outside the house. When you are given the option, select the "Everyone is out for themselves. You should learn that." option. Once Alistair's approval is high enough, the next time you speak to him he will tell you that he's been thinking about what you said and he agrees he should stand up for himself more. As long as you don't say "That's not what I meant. Don't do that!", then his personality will be hardened.

The point of hardening his personality is so that  when you try to get him on the throne later in the story, he is willing to become the king.

Depends, do you prefer the type of crazy that is delusional (Lelianna--the maker sent me! No, for serious!) or the type of crazy that is emotionally stunted (Morrigan--Love is a weakness. No really. I don't love you. Shut up. Take the ring. It's not sentimentality, really. It's uh... just... it's practical. **** you.)

I don't think Leliana is delusional, or crazy. The Guardian of the Urn calls her out, and she doesn't admit it right there that she made it up. Later on in her romance she can tell you that she did it to fit in. In Orlais she was somebody. In Ferelden she had to start all over. So it's part defense mechanism for insecurity, and how she is coping with her former mentor's betrayal. I can understand her being emotionally insecure because with her former life style lies, and seduction were common place. When the player finally romances her she gets slightly possessive, but her emotions are realistic in my opinion. Why should she continue a romance if your noble decides to marry Anora? That's a slap in the face to her feelings. The player is basically dumping her at the first sign of political opportunity.

Morrigan isn't crazy either, but I agree with emotionally stunted.

Both of these characters suffer from emotional problems brought on by life experiences. Leliana isn't schizophrenic though. She just wants to be important. I never really buy Morrigan is as cruel as she likes to let on. She puts on a tough girl persona, but she isn't as cold as Flemeth. I think Morrigan's reaction to the golden mirror gift really shows that.

Both of these characters are wonderfully written, and voice acted to convey all these complex things they have going on. It is one of the reasons I have played the game so many times. I just hate to see simple labels like "crazy" applied. It just seems that most apply the label on first impression, and then never bother to look past the surface.

See which one proposes a romance first, without using gifts.

If you're a female Warden she hits on you once her relationship is at "warm."

You harden Alistar by undertaking his personal quest to visit his half-sister in Denerim (say something like "everyone is out for themselves"). later in the camp you talk to Alistair and he shares his thoughts that perhaps you were right, and he should start looking more to himself. Agree with him and you have a hardened Alistair.

Good post Hahren.

Both Leliana and Morigan are sane enough by the standards of their world. Both have had hard lives, suffered abuse, killed, been manipulated and used, and used and manipulated others.

The key difference (for me) is that Leliana is looking for redemption, and still holds onto kindness, mercy and love as things of value. Maybe because she has been given real kindness and love in her life, and she remembers and values those memories.

Morrigan has been damaged to the point that she can't admit that kindness or love have any value. She has also (unlike Leliana) been condemned to imprisonment or death just for an accident of birth. She takes every chance to show herself and others that she's not "weak" by rebelling against authority and insulting those weaker than herself (free the murderers; defile the ashes; mock the refugees; leave the peasants to die; call for the death of the mages; etc). You can eventually get past her defenses, but she'll never entirely trust you, and she'll never forgive herself for falling in love with you.

If you want a romance with someone who is open to love, Leliana is your best choice. If you want angst, and drama, and fights, and reunions, Morrigan is there.

If you have a long relationship history, you've probably dated people similar to one or both. ;)

Ahh reminds me of watching Giligans Island and pondering Ginger or Mary Anne?

Personaly Morrigan would laugh at you if you fell down a cliff and broke you leg, then leave you there, while Leliana would try her best to help you, not a hard choice for me.
