One other thing I'll say in favor of ME1. In ME1 the game never throws anything at you that it doesn't give you an opportunity to resolve while ME2 continually sets you up with problems that you can't resolve simple because the game doesn't give you the dialogue choices to do so. A few examples of the unresolved bull**** ME2 throws at you include, Cerberus putting bugs on your ship, proving the existence of the Reapers, proving to the Alliance that you're still loyal to them (or not ), doing nothing after Jack threatens to kill your first officer, and of course finding out if your love interest from ME1 still loves you.

If there's bull**** in ME1 you deal with it, in ME2 you're constantly taking **** like a little **** and letting the Illusive Man pull your damn strings like a ****ing puppet. I thought I was the biggest badass in the galaxy, so why am I taking this ****?

PS: On a side note, why the hell can't I throw Jack of my ship? She's constantly disrespecting me, in combat she's worthless relative to Samara, Miranda, or Thane, and she threatens to murder my first officer. Honestly if you're in command you can't allow that **** and expect anyone to still respect your authority.

I just finished replaying ME1 to import the character to ME2. I have to admit after getting used to ME2 the originals combat is is dire, i doubt i could force myself through another play through.

I kinda wanted to go back and play another new character, to import to ME2.

I'm having trouble playing it again though. Compared to ME2, it's very outdated and the controls and gameplay just aren't as advanced.

Part of me kinda wishes BioWare would make a patch for ME1 to make combat and movement more like that of ME2... I know that's not gonna happen though.

I'm having trouble going back to ME1 also. I'm definitely motivated to do it though because my character in my ME1 save is level 58 and because I didn't talk to Conrad Verner three times, so he doesn't show up in my ME2 games. The only thing that's holding me back is potential boredom. When I think about having to do all the side quests again it makes me cringe.

No problems at all. Apart from graphics, ME 1 is the superior game in every way.

Lol. How so?

I beat ME1 about 5 times. Beat ME2 once and went back to get my perfect renegade Shep for ME1 and almost killed myself doing so. ME1 was a great game right up until ME2 came out.

Hell no, I just made me an eng and needless to say I do miss sabotage and other bits dearly..

Still don't see why they ditch the ability to throw grenades and the old wounded screen instead of that irritating one with the veins.

go play a shooter then because all you want is action.

No i think I'll stay, after all I have 10 play throughs in ME1, its just ME2 was done so much better. It's all about the attention getter now. 10 playthroughs of ME1 10 playthroughs of ME2. ME2 has a better attention grabber.

Actually I think most players will stick with Mass Effect since the developers have agreed that the pacing and action could be better!

If all you want is pacing and action why play ME, go play Halo, Gears, Bioshock,
or any of the hundreds of other shooters out there, stop ruining the
RPG genre.

no offense but the RPG genre wasn't good to begin with. it was at the verge of death until the Mass Effect saga came out.

I'm with you on the side quests.
I don't have trouble actually remembering how to play it but, as good as ME1 was, ME2 is just much more entertaining to play.  ME1 is boring by comparison; the combat mechanics are less smooth, less intense, and frankly, far too easy, and all those side quests are extremely repetitive -- I'd skip them, except that I don't want to miss all the stuff that gets imported into ME2.

Now that ME2 is out, ME1 is more like something that I have to get through in order to bring a new character into ME2.  Not that I don't have fun on the way, but I always find myself looking forward to finishing so I can import.  Once I get all the different permutations I want as far as storyline/character choices (meaning maybe 4 characters), I don't really see myself going back to ME1 anytime soon.

Unbearable for me. ME2 just improved on everything and got rid of everything I hated about ME1. Horribly boring, uninspired side missions were one of those things.

Ruining?

Honestly, coming from someone who has played and loved many RPG's over the years, I think Bioware is doing RPG's the biggest favor in the world.  So many RPGs out there keyed in on traditional RPG elements, like collecting huge inventories of items, micromanaging stats, weapons, and armor, and optimizing class and character builds, and quite frankly that sort of detail-oriented number-crunching nonsense does a disservice to the game as a whole.  It just isn't appealing to most people; it slows down gameplay and takes away from the importance of the story and the characters.

Frankly, I think that Bioware rescued the genre from people who consider themselves "true RPG fans" by distilling what truly makes an RPG compelling and putting it into a package that is much more entertaining to actually play.  I even admit to being a "true RPG fan", myself.  But once I played ME2 I realized immediately that Bioware had really captured everything that I actually loved about RPGs and just made the actual gameplay more fun.  All that other crap -- the stacks of items, the number crunching, and optimizing stats -- is mostly just tedious fluff.  Don't get me wrong, I still love playing DA:O, or even FO3/Oblivion sometimes, but I recognize that ME2 is every bit the RPG that they are; and in some respects a better one.

I'm trying to drudge my way through another ME1 playthrough, but it's proving difficult. I've gotten to used to the combat in ME2 that when I get into ME1, I feel like an idiot because the controls are so wonky. I guess it's much more jarring when you go from a game that is so smooth to a game that just isn't.

I'm definitely only doing a few select side quests in ME1. Ones that I know will matter.

I recommend using the "slowmo 5" cheat code to make the Mako and elevators more tolerable. I also had problems going back when i first tried to melee attack and mixed up the spacebar :P

No way! When she's running point for me, she's shockwaving everything (no q and e required), The sight of collectors flying all over the place is glorious. Now Miranda is a troublemaker, constantly getting herself stuck standing *on* cover and making me facepalm.

No worries man, it's obvious which direction Bioware agrees with at least as far as Mass Effect is concerned

...but just to be clear, the first Mass Effect was and still is an excellent, outstanding game.

I'm as much a sucker for Mass Effect now as I was when it first came out; the story, the characters, Shepard, and now the nostalgia of it all just pulls me in. Four hours playing Mass Effect after Mass Effect 2 and I already miss the old Normandy. BioWare wrote what may have been their best story with in the first game, and every time I play though it I still feel a ping of awe. Mass Effect is like a great book I can reread over and over again or a comfort movie that I can always watch no matter what.

Actually, after beating ME2, I've gone back and played ME1 twice and beaten it. There are only a few minor control differences so what would keep me from it and I totally love both of them :D

ME1's combat is so bad in my opinion. I love entering a room and having every mob activate immunity while spamming one liners. Plus between gear and over powered specs insanity is kind of a joke in ME1 compared with ME2.

Mostly true until you meet biotics who keep spaming singularity. You end up on the floor again and again while taking fire. It was as bad as getting trapped by husks but this time it was at range :\\

Not at all.

Playing ME right now, and actually enjoying the game. Heh, in fact I seem to enjoy ME even more after playing ME2, as I am back in the times when my character was not forced to work with an evil organisation, when the status of Spectre meant something...

As for combat - it never been an important part of the game for me. I play on a casual setting, lol. But still, I prefer ME system, where powers do not share cooldown, no pesky ammunition, and tech/biotic powers can affect any enemy.

The only thing I dislike is the hacking mini-game - never been good at it, the ones in ME2 are easier for me.

Considering I didn't have any ME1 playthroughs to import and just started playing the Mass Effect series with ME 2, going to back to ME 1 was really tough with the gameplay and graphic difference. After finishing two playthroughs now, I do appreciate it a lot more. I really liked the storyline of it, the old squad members (esp. Liara), and I loved the Illos and the attack on the Citadel endgame. There is so much information in the first one, you just can't stick with the second one.

The fact that the default game that Bioware was like their way of getting you to play the first one again if you didn't already. I just started my third ME1 playthrough so I can have a renegade character. I definitely don't look forward to all the sidequests through. They are extremely grueling, but I believe I'll manage.

I tried to go back and make a paragon male Shepard, since I accidentally deleted my only one some time ago... I couldn't even get past Eden Prime. It was just so painful. ME2 did everything right in my book, so right that it made its predecessor look like an unfinished tech demo. And since I'm liable to draw fire for that comment right there, let me just say something that should be entirely too obvious: This is all my opinion.

There's just nothing that can draw me back into the first game. I played through it so many times that I've practically memorized every line (an exaggeration, but you get the point). That means that there are virtually no surprises left for me, which can make a storyline get quite stale. And since I consider the gameplay to be vastly inferior to the sequel... Well, there's no reason to go back. Aside from creating a perfect paragon male Shepard, which, in my world, isn't worth the frustration.

ME1 is a lot less streamlined. Which has it good parts (the world can feel big) and bad parts (it can be tedious as hell).

A lot of it is tedious. Travel especially..

The "Slowmo 5" cheat code is your friend. Speeds everything up so you don't have to pull your hair out. I had the same bored feeling you had but wanted to have a Shepard free of any LI.
