Hello Off-Topic! Before I start, I'd like to get the point across that not only do I know nothing of TVs, I also lack the sufficient brain capacity needed to locate the forum code of conduct. So if this isn't an appropriate topic, it (along with my hopes and dreams) should be locked down for the greater good of mankind.

I've recently stumbled across a television set that my grandparents had a volume trouble with in the past. It's a rather large Samsung SDTV. Perfect for an unemployed high-schooler like me, right? Eh. If only.

Thing is, I'm starting to get the same problems. For the first week or so, it was fine. The TV acted like any television would (complete with a shoddy built-in surround!), but over the past day or so it's been turning on and off on it's own, doing automated channel searches, and even hiking up the volume of its own accord. The latter just so happens to override any other action taken by me, forcing me to just unplug the thing. It didn't help how it decided to surprise me with this issue in the middle of the night. I awoke to find the damn TV on max volume.

Now, not without my resources, I search up the Ol' Google in an attempt to find some answers. There's one little thing that caught my interest:
Try a hard reset - to see if the eprom or microprogram on the volume
control has been corrupted.  Just unplug the power cord for 4 hours,
then try again.

This made the most sense to me above all other explanations I could find. It explained how the TV acted so normally after a long while of collecting dust in the back room of my granny's house.
What I want to know is: What is this eprom or microprogram, and how do I go about fixing this on my own? If these two things are involved with a hard reset, I'm pretty sure it's accessible from my main menu. Any hardware junkies out there?

I bolded the interesting bit for all you TL;DRs out there. Any help would be appreciated.

If the 4hrs reset doesn't work, then I'm not sure what to suggest. The two things you mentioned are likely inside the TV and it's *highly* dangerous to open a CRT/SDTV up if you don't know what you're doing.

Basically you might need an engineer out.

I was under the assumption that it wouldn't be any more dangerous than opening up a desktop so long as it wasn't plugged in...
I was kind of hoping to never having to resort to paid repairs, too. Good grief.

Desktops don't have anywhere near as much voltage coursing through them as a TV would, plus TVs can store charge for a lengthy period I think. I can't say exactly what the reasons are, but it's very good advice.

I see your point. I'm guessing the unnecessarily large hump in the back isn't for decoration...

Do you have access to a manual, or at least the make/model (try google for its manual)? If there's a way to reset the settings on it then it might be worth a try.

No need. My poor observational skills led me to assume it was a Samsung from memory. It's an RCA TV, of which is the exact model most other people on the interwebz have had trouble with. Apparently the problem has something to do with the chip that enables volume, channel, and other control through the front console. Some guy claims removing it solved the problem for him, but I don't think I'll risk doing something like that just for some crappy TV.

...Looks like it's back to my 12 inch. I'm certainly not looking forward to reading (or trying to read) the ME2 text on that thing.

My cat is sitting on your remote. Sorry about that. I lured him away with some tuna.

You fill my head with such wishful thinking!
What I'd give to just find out that someone was just sitting on the remote. Wouldn't be too far-fetched, either.

[Edit] Actually, I think I'd be pissed, hehe. It wasn't exactly pleasing to the ear being woken up by some excruciatingly loud culinary infomercial.
