my question is: is the pulse rifle really that great? i'm not having any real trouble with insanity, so i'm not too too worried about difficulty, but is the pulse rifle really significantly awesome and worth giving up shotguns?

I mean come on, you know you want to tech armour charge Harbinger then kill him with a face punch/shotgun combo.

Also the Firestorm can go farther on the same amount of power cells than any other heavy weapon so its efficient enough that you can use it just as much as you'd use a shotgun without worrying about running out of power cells.
PS: If you're not a great shot then go with the shotgun. The Vindicator is awesome; but it recquires a lot of accuracy to make the most of it.

SMG is your main weapon 60% of the time.
Shotgun is pretty tough to get close with, but with a scimitar its rape.

/agreed on the firestorm. make sure you complete zaeed's loyalty quest before you pick up grunt. that heavy weapon saves you a LOT of grief when dealing with jedore and her krogan
The Firestorm is a god send against husks. If you're playing on Insanity it will save your ass twenty times over on the Derelict Reaper.
I just wish we could buy power cells and medigel or buy an upgrade for the Normandy that would give us a full supply at the start of each mission. Rationally I know I'll find all I need; but I just can't bring myself to depend on a limited commodity.

Well, I would say the vindicator does complement the SMG quite nicely.miltos33 wrote...
If you have the SMG you don't really need the AR. On the other hand, the eviscerator shotgun can give you more options.
Still, on the whole, the comparison seems to be pretty 50/50. It really seems to come down to what individual weapon has your personal preference.

Totally disagree, SMGs work great against Shields/Barriers and the Tempest can do quite a bit of damage, but accuracy goes down the drain on sustained fire - anything past knife range and bullets start hitting anything except your intended target (unless you are firing at something big like the Thresher Maw or Geth Colossus). Also, they don't work well vs armour and of the 3 defenses, Sentinels without an appropriate bonus power are weakest against armour.
Picking the AR gives you flexibility. Mid-range combat? Avenger/Collector Rifle. Long-range sniping? Vindicator. Never tried Shotgun, but with the Ceberus DLC the Eviscerator is devastating at short range, decent at mid-range and excellent pop-out-of-cover burst damage

I think the sent needs close-range solutions. That is why shotgun is best.

AR isn't good against armor either though.
