so i'm doing my insanity run now, and was hoping to get a little advice on which weapon i should specialize in. I'd very much like to go with shotgun, just because i like shotguns, but i am tempted to go for the assault rifle due to the geth pulse rifle.
my question is: is the pulse rifle really that great? i'm not having any real trouble with insanity, so i'm not too too worried about difficulty, but is the pulse rifle really significantly awesome and worth giving up shotguns?

Nah get the shotgun, it's the most fun.

the Geth Pulse rifle really isn't worth the metal it took to replicate it. it'sa trophy weapon. if you like Assault Sentinel, get the shotgun.

Geth Pulse Rifle is great against barriers and shields. Which you encounter a lot on Insanity. So it's a valid choice. Combine it with Armor Piercing Ammo and you get a pretty good all-around weapon.

Shotgun! If girly-man engineers can use a shotgun on insanity, then sentinels are practially obliged to use them.

I mean come on, you know you want to tech armour charge Harbinger then kill him with a face punch/shotgun combo.

I really liked the Collector Assault Rifle, but Shotguns are very nice as well.

Get the assault rifle and use the Vindicator, it so accurate it can do double duty as an assault rifle and a sniper rifle plus it does a lot of damage and its accurate enough to frequently score you the 2X multiplier you get for a headshot. If you want a close range weapon use the Firestorm flamethrower as your heavy weapon, I love that thing and burning your enemies to a crisp is even more satisfying than blasting them in the face with a shotgun.

Also the Firestorm can go farther on the same amount of power cells than any other heavy weapon so its efficient enough that you can use it just as much as you'd use a shotgun without worrying about running out of power cells.

PS:  If you're not a great shot then go with the shotgun.  The Vindicator is awesome; but it recquires a lot of accuracy to make the most of it.

/agreed on the firestorm. make sure you complete zaeed's loyalty quest before you pick up grunt. that heavy weapon saves you a LOT of grief when dealing with jedore and her krogan

Plus the firestorm is extremely valuable during the Quarian rescue mission against all the varren and Grunt's loyalty mission.

Assault Rifle. It covers all the ranges.

SMG is your main weapon 60% of the time.

Shotgun is pretty tough to get close with, but with a scimitar its rape.

The Firestorm is a god send against husks.   If you're playing on Insanity it will save your ass twenty times over on the Derelict Reaper.

I just wish we could buy power cells and medigel or buy an upgrade for the Normandy that would give us a full supply at the start of each mission.  Rationally I know I'll find all I need; but I just can't bring myself to depend on a limited commodity.

Go for the shotgun. The Scimitar is a lot of fun to use on an Assault Armor Sentinel. I took Sniper Rifles for my Power Armor Sentinel so I could fire off some Warp Ammo Viper rounds during power cooldowns and found it complimented that playstyle nicely. I find assault rifles to be a bit redundant for the Sentinel. The Tempest works fine for all of my Shield/Barrier stripping needs.

I have Shotgun Assault Sentinel and AR Power Sentinel, both are good, but the Shotgun version is a lot more fun (using Evi shotgun).

I went with assault rifle training. Was using the Geth Pulse rifle and it's ok as it holds a lot of ammo but I switched to the collectors rifle as that thing chews through armour pretty quickly.

Using heavy reave as my special.

If you have the SMG you don't really need the AR. On the other hand, the eviscerator shotgun can give you more options.

Well, I would say the vindicator does complement the SMG quite nicely.

Still, on the whole, the comparison seems to be pretty 50/50. It really seems to come down to what individual weapon has your personal preference.

I used a shotgun and assault armor on my sentinel. Even on Insanity it is pretty much impossible to die - it's friggen' ridiculous.

Totally disagree, SMGs work great against Shields/Barriers and the Tempest can do quite a bit of damage, but accuracy goes down the drain on sustained fire - anything past knife range and bullets start hitting anything except your intended target (unless you are firing at something big like the Thresher Maw or Geth Colossus).  Also, they don't work well vs armour and of the 3 defenses, Sentinels without an appropriate bonus power are weakest against armour.

Picking the AR gives you flexibility.   Mid-range combat? Avenger/Collector Rifle.  Long-range sniping? Vindicator.  Never tried Shotgun, but with the Ceberus DLC the Eviscerator is devastating at short range, decent at mid-range and excellent pop-out-of-cover burst damage

AR isn't good against armor either though. Sents have warp and a heavy pistol.

I think the sent needs close-range solutions. That is why shotgun is best.

sentinel should have armor piercing ammo and a vindicator assault rifle. you will drop barriers/shields with warp/overload.
