as to alistair's age, there was a thread where a member posted a timeline of how they thought things went based on the books and the game. david gaider would not come out and outright confirm it. his paraphrased words were that he did not have his notes handy and was hesitant to confirm anything, but the timeline seemed fairly accurate. that timeline suggests alistair to be around 22 years old, give or take a year. if i remember correctly, the calling is about 15 years before the game as cailan is supposed to be 5 during the calling and he is about 20 or so in the game. the stolen throne is another 15 years, approximately, before the calling since maric is 16ish in the stolen thron and early 30s in the calling. everything is approximate. these are me going off of memory and no official timeline or special knowledge.

I think you're off by a few years, unless Cailan married and became king when he was 15, and I think that would have been mentioned. And what about Anora's age?  Eamon's letter in RTO says that she's approaching 30, and she's not that much older than Cailan.

From the DA wiki: Cailan was born in 9:01 Dragon, Maric's son with Fiona would have been born ~ 9:10/9:11 Dragon and the events of Origins begin in 9:30. Cailan's birth year might be wrong, but according to Eamon's letter and Anora's remark that she and Cailan were betrothed to each other while they were very, very young, it seems like he would be closer to 29/30 in the game.

@ Errant, alot of people have been talking about Anders as another possible bastard of Maric because of his resemblance to Alistair/Cailan. Maybe the maid story was true and Anders is Fiona's son?

Yes, Cailan's birthdate is wrong. In 9:10/9:11 he's 5 years old (that's what DG said). That makes him around 25 when he dies. Anora is a little older, so I heard, maybe 27 or 28.

Alistair would be between 19 and 25 - depending on what tale you want to believe.

DG said something about the theory painting Anders as Maric's son. It was along the lines of his model being over-interpreted. I took that as a NO.

My feeling is that a lot of hay is being made over the fact that he's blond and a mage. Doesn't mean he isn't, but there's nothing to say he is, either. While I think Fiona's son is still out there, I have a feeling that who he is may turn out to be more surprising. Don't ask me how. I'd have to know a lot more about the future plot line than I do to even hazard a guess. Anders just seems too soon and too potentially obvious. On the other hand, I guessed that Alistair was the heir as soon as I found out he was a bastard, so you never know. ;)

Yeah, I have a hard time believing it as well. It doesn't seem like this part of the story is focusing on the heir issue, or on the throne in general, so bringing Anders in at this point seems odd timing if the companions are indeed supposed to 'fit into the story.' Also, Anders really doesn't look 20 to me (I know I know, neither does Alistair, but that's a different issue).

It seems to me like people are jumping on the fact that Anders is a blond mage. I don't notice any similarities to Alistair or Cailan, which you'd think he'd have considering Maric seems to have pretty strong genes. If anything, Herren (Wade's friend) looks more like a Theirin than Anders does. :P

There's always the possibility that his mother was actually Fiona. Besides, according to (I think) Loghain, Maric almost did acknowledge Alistair but his doing so would hurt Rowan's authority and jeopardize Cailan's claim to the throne, which would imply he'd be older than Cailan.

thx for the spoiler. Lol. I'm on page 160 of the calling. :P

Cailan is 9 yrs old in The Calling.

According to david gaider hes 5 him being 9 was a mistake

and in my version of the calling it says cailen is 5 as well

So, the book has errors?  Some books say 9 and others 5?  There aren't any version numbers listed on the book that would indicate that there is more than 1 version out there.

Maric says that his son is '9' when he is talking to Fiona after finding out that they are there because of visions - the night before entering the Deep Roads.  So, regardless of what Gaider intended, the published book says '9'.

At the end of The Stolen Throne, Cailan is 12.

There are clearly all sorts of timeline/age issues in both the books and the game.

He intended Cailan to be 5, but didn't catch the mistake until it was already in the publisher's hands. Some later versions (like the Kindle) have the correct age, while some printed books say 9.

Maric obviously provided a great deal of the male Fereldan population.
