I decided to do Zaeed's Inferno Grenage advanced training.   He is currently my only loyal team member.  I went back through the upgrades later and the Inferno Grenade training is still there.  I purchased it again (forgetting that I had already upgraded once).  It deducted another 5000 eezo.  I noticed that it was still selectable and upgraded once more.  Another 5000 eezo gone.  So.....  Now, I'm down 10,000 eezo for no extra skills, as far as I can tell.  The explanation on of advanced training in-game absolutely sucks IMHO (and in others' opinions I've found in the forum here)....  Is this a bug or will the upgrades that become available with other loyal team members be free (twice)?

Researching Advanced Training lets you select one bonus skill, and every time you select it, it lets you replace that bonus skill with another. When you have other loyals, you'll have more options.

You can't get more than one bonus skill, selecting it again and again will just let you replace it for another (points spent upgrading it to say level 3 will be refunded to you).

And when you get another, no, they won't be free. You'll have to research it again to get another option for theirs.

Thanks for the explanation. SO...then this is a bug. I spent an extra 10,000 eezo "acquiring" Inferno Grenade twice more, when I already had it.

(i.e., Inferno Grenade should have been removed from the advanced training choices, after I had already purchased it)

Not really a bug, but it is poor UI design, at least it should be greyed out as it's currently selected.

I just confirmed this bug. I collected more eezo and went back to the Research Terminal. It turns out that it also deducts the 5000 eezo once you've selected "Advanced Training" but before you even know what your choices are (e.g., Inferno Grenade). That's not really good... maybe I wouldn't want Inferno Grenade. There's also another minor bug with Advanced Training. Once it is purchased, the standard upgrade message appears, saying that information about your upgrades is available at your "Personal Terminal" (should be "Private Terminal").... Neither "Advanced Training" nor "Inferno Grenade" show up under Upgrades at the Private Terminal. I do have the power... it just doesn't show up in the Upgrades list.

ummm.. anything resulting in unintended functionality is a bug. I'm an IT QA engineer. It's also not an inherent UI design flaw... the UI normally works (by removing items previously purchased). It's not a minor bug, IMO, since it also involves the player losing hard-to-obtain resources.

It would work a lot better if it deducted the eezo after choosing the power as apposed as to when you click "Research." Then you'll see you have no options and give you the choice to cancel out.

Or could just do a check when you research, if there's 1 or less available options, remove it from the list after words. Keep it on the list if there's 2 or more. But meh.

Not a bug, nope. Poor desgin, but not a programming bug (yes, by definition). If you read the Having said that, eventually you'll have WAY more than enough Element Zero... just got mine a few systems. Lastly, if you'd read the descriptions in the game well enough, you'd understand you only got the ability to train in the skills as your team members became loyal.

"Not a bug, nope. Poor desgin, but not a programming bug (yes, by definition)." Idiot. A bug is when software behaves in unintended ways and does not comply with functional requirements. Go back to school if you're in IT. Jagass. "Lastly, if you'd read the descriptions in the game well enough, you'd understand you only got the ability to train in the skills as your team members became loyal." What part did I not understand? Dunchit. I have ONE loyal team member, but I can rebuy his skill multiple times. There is no way a functional requirement would be "allow player to keep buying the same Advanced Training skill over and over."

Yeah,I got this problem too. Just didn't notice that by simply picking Advanced Training would cost my Element Zero before I pick an ability. That's terrible...

it is NOT a bug. It is the research project Advanced Training, it costs 5000 Units Element Zero, and when the project is completed, you gain access to the bonus ability of your loyal squadmates. Researching it again will remove any bonus ability your character has, allowing you to choose again.

Is it really so hard for you guys to check what crew-members are loyal, what bonus power your character has and from that figure out what results the advanced training research project would bring?

Functional requirements? Really? It does exactly what the tooltip says. I'd say that's behaving as intended. And I've been in IT very likely longer than you've been working, don't try to impose your obviously ignorant views on those of us who actually do know. (I can also bring up the fact that I know several people who actually do/did QA games and they would reinforce my statement.)

Reading comprehension is fundamental. Once you can do that, then come back and we'll have a little chatsy... m'kay?

Poor design is worse than a bug. If you would rather be known for incompetence than a mistake, then by all means continue.

not happy w the design neither. bug or not, it is a lil confusing. they call it a bonus power and/ or extra ability. I have used advanced research 6x and it only trades one specific power which is always ability on the bottom which is already the bonus ability. we should be able to choose which one we would like to trade because we surely arent getting any Extra bonus powers, we are simply trading which to me was very misleading and disappointing. i also wasted precious ezero on this unthoughtful design. i hope im just doing something wrong and if i am please explain this to me. couple of questions-do i get an xtra ability and if so how/when do i actually get an ability? other than than lil issue, in my opinion this has been one of my fav games ever and that is why im a lil worked up over it. i feel as though i might be missn out on somethng awesome. plz help

I had the same misintepretion on the research as original writer here. So it's easy to waste eezo as it's not that clearly state and it functions differently from other research. Maybe the easiest solution would be just to name the research project "Change special power" or something similar.

Of course now that you have learned the hardway how it works, it's clear how it works. But it's deviation from rest of the UI as rest has been very intuitive and you don't really have possibility to waste resources for nothing.

There actually is a bug with this feature. I am on my second play through and three times I have gone in to advanced training to CHANGE which power I get. Three times I have clicked the "Research" popup verification button and it takes the eezo but does not bring up the screen to select which power you want.

When I created my character it let me pick one, I picked slam. After I got mordin I tried to switch to something else and it bugged. Later I came back (probably after quitting the game) and was able to switch to Geth Shield. I have gone back again and tried twice in a row to change and the interface never comes up.

Something is obviously wrong with advanced training and second play through attempts.

Just wasted 5000 element zero accessing the menu twice by accident, had to load an old save.

The UI has some minor annoying issues, but I consider this one a major annoyance.

Found this thread through google because as stated the game takes 5000 element zero every time I click research but there are no different bonus powers to choose other than what I have in the squad screen. Funny because after finding out that the game "locks doors" behind you I do a regular save when entering a new location or opening a door so no harm done.

It just seems to me like there are a LOT OF MORONS out there. As soon as you click on "Research" it takes your resource, no matter what the research is. This is as bad as the guy complaining about the game "not telling you how to select the grenade launcher".

Yes, quite confusing for new players, and somewhat frustrating. But remember this: Nothing is Perfect. Even the almighty StarCraft 2 which spent more than a decate into development has the FPS (no the gerne, FramesPerSecond) bug, may burn out GPU for some people.

Things will get better for the next installment.

Well mine is actually taking away my element zero and not letting me choose which ability I can get, I am at the end of the game, only 2 members are not loyal (Tali and Thane) and it just takes my Eezo away and nada abilities for me :-(
