Up until Eden Prime, Shepard was a normal space marine.  The missions were fairly mundane and he/she is a good officer amongst peers.

Cue the beacon and everything goes to hell in a handbasket at warp speed.

I dunno about you....but how can a space marine, even a Spec. Ops one deal with mowing down machines that haven't been seen in centuries, deal with coded visions burned into their head, actually MEET a Reaper and hold a conversation..... take on an egomanic rogue Spectre- defeat its poessessed form- make a galactic changing decision with the Council and come out okay?

That's just the start

Cue ME2. Shepard dies. Collectors and other NPC's saw you get spaced and you died. You're brought back ot life by a Anti-Alliance terrorist cell. Friends and loved ones moved one. Shepard missed two YEARS from his/her life.

Reapers are invading. No one cares.

Agree? Disagree?

Shepard pulls the IMPOSSIBLE- going headlong into Collector space and takes own the main base. In my Shep's case she got all squad/crew out, but that's beside the point....

That's a LOT to deal with. NPC's say that yeah, most would have been broken, etc.... but I just don't buy it.

Unless Shepard's willpower is stronger than Revan.... first and foremost, Shepard's only human, and can crack due to stress.....

and this, ladies and gents is a LOT of stress.

Yes he went through a lot, but that didn't start on Eden Prime...

He either lost his parents to slavers as a child....or grew up without a family on Earth...or sacrificed his full compliment of troops in order to win a pivotal battle....or watched his entire squad be torn apart by thresher maws becoming the only survivor in the process...or held against a massive offensive force from the terminus systems in an incredibly taxing defensive.

So Shep has been through a lot well before the events of ME1 or 2. Luckily, he/she is a tough egg to crack.

Sounds like a fantastic ending for ME3.

Anderson: Shepard! The reapers are a stone's throw away from the citadel! WHAT DO?

Joker: Uh... sorry councilor, the commander is in the fetal position in the corner and crying.

Reapers destroy citadel. Harvest organic life. Credits roll.

This is why Shepard is able to be a big goddamn hero. He's has remarkably strong will. The game constantly reminds you of how resilient Shepard is. Its one of the qualities that makes him a natural leader.

Though maybe his mind is as fragile as an egg at this point. Everyone has a breaking point.

Shepard has grown up with a lot going on.I would think he is kinda used to it by now.

well, depending on the past, being a spacer war hero is not nearly as eventful as most other paths are.

Great picture!

Shepard is one strong-willed mofo. However, even he knows that he couldn't have done it without his friends.:)

I would love to explore Shepard's past more. We were given the opportunity to in ME1, and I half expected to see more about Shepard's past in ME2. Unfortunately, no. It does seem a bit improbable that Shepard wouldn't do some soul-searching on his/her own when no one is around...maybe with tears or with rage.

I love that painting, Matron Adena. So beautiful and powerful.

In all seriousness though, Shep is just a blank slate for the player to zip around the galaxy with, leaving a trail of either flowers and peace, or punched faces and anger in his or her wake. Is it stressful? Yes. I doubt though that it would play any major role in the story.

ME3 To Do List:

1. KO the Turian Councilor

2. TKO the Reaper fleets.

3. Wrap up any loose ends still floating around.

4. Pack Liara up on the Normandy and embrace eternity for three months straight.

Even heroes need vacation time.

This, Shep has to get upset at something! I would'nt mind if he actualy shed a tear or two it would be a first for a tough caracter in gaming to display his/her sensitivity and show even if they are the best hope in the galaxy there still human.

Um Shepard already had a mental breakdown! After Mindoir and Akuze she basically became a sociopath, though she's very good at avoiding the Alliance psych tests, but people have a tendency of dying around her. Entire colonies, sometimes entire races. And she blows little things like massive Asari dreadnaughts and Collector bases for fun. She never talks anyone down, either, she'd just rather shoot people. And only 3 of her squad, and the pilot of her ship, made it out of her last mission. Well, technically only two, the third one is still in a pod in the cargo hold.

You'd think after waking up after 2 years, told off by LI (depending on your game) having to sort out everyone's problems, called nuts by the council, you'd have to close to a major hissy fit of some sort. I really want her to yell at someone...please!

That may be the difference between what it means to be a hero and the common man. You shelve *everything* until the mission is done, then you let loose.

I figure that. But something has to give. Or maybe Shepard has the emotional depth of a teaspoon...who knows

At this point, a breakdown would be totally out of character for Shepard.

That will be in ME3 when he loses his love interest ....

Or for those that don't have one, stubs his or her toe on some stairs.

On the same note, I do agree thatsomething needs to make Shepard just a tad upset?

a fist int othe wall.... slamming a hand on the table or something!

I just felt like screaming I'm solving all YOUR problems? What about mine?! I DIED! I have cybernetic parts in me! I missed two years of my freakin' life!

Agreed. I would love to be able to learn more about Shepard's past. I mean we get to create it so I want to live it completely. If you have family or friends have a picture of them, have dog tags from old soldier friends, have something that connects Shepard to there past somewhere.
That and emotion, Shepard never seems to show any unless you're Renegade and even then it's just rage.

Yeah, I can see it and I'd even like to see it.

I have to throw in though that it's partly why I don't care to read a lot of ME fan fiction. Everyone wants to put in emo Shepard breakdown crying in their room when love interests enters scene.
