In my first 2 runs of this game I almost never used heavy weapons. Sometimes I just forgot, other times I knew doing it the old fashioned way will get the job done, it just might take longer. Bottom line is, I kept picking up heavy ammo and getting 100 credits. That's a joke.

So in my third run I decided to use heavy weapons all the time. I am trying to use it every major battle. It is fun! Big explosions, flame throwers, ice balls! The are great.

My suggestion to everyone is to never conserve your heavy ammo. Go nuts with it! Rocket dudes bothering you? Rocket them back. More then 2 enemies bunched up? Avalanche them! I am considering making a "Heavy weapon only engineer run"

Psychologically I just can't bring myself not to hoard a limited commodity like power cells or medi gel. Rationally I know I don't need to hoard it; but I just can't bring myself to use it to its full potential. I just wish the damned game would let me buy power cells and medi gel or just make it so I start each mission with a full supply. I mean seriously there's nowhere in the galaxy where I can buy medi gel or power cells? and while we're on the subject why the hell can't I buy and sell resources?

Its a shame too, cause I love the firestorm.

Yea, my first playthrough, I kept noticing how I always forgot to use my heavy weapons in fights, but now that I'm playing on insanity as an adept, I pretty much get forced to use it sometimes.

Also, as an infiltrator, it is awesome using heavy weapons while cloaked. It doesn't work with heavy weapons you have to charge up, but with a missile launcher or grenade launcher, they do so much more damage! I remember first getting the grenade launcher in the opening mission, immediately cloaking, and just blowing the hell out of the whole group of robots with one shot!

Heavy weapons, no matter which one, are more like a "skip-fight" button. It simply makes things too easy and detracts from the excitement of actual firefights. At least thats how I feel. Nowadays I find myself using them more and more though only conservatively, power cells are too uncommon to blow all your ammo in one mission. I wish they would revise the HW ammo system. Smaller thermal clips really should count towards HW ammo (i.e. change the system to be percentage for each HW and each thermal clip adds x% to the total with each shot requiring x% of ammo).

I actually always reserve them for "emergencies" which doesnt really make sense, since I simply forget about them.

On Insanity though, I definitely use them liberally.

I used to use the avalanch a lot untill i realized how awsome AoE cryo blast is on my Engineer(great for when i find myself swarmed by husks). Now i mostly use the Collector Beam weapon cause i like the percision of it.

I tried using the Cain but it takes just so damn long to charge up it seems hardly worth the time. Might be cool to use it on the final boss if your playing on Insanity.

I almost never use them even though I always play Insanity. I nuke the big boss twice. That's it. Generally, I feel they're too clumsy and a miss from any weapon makes me cringe. Also, while the Collector Pulse thing is my favorite HW (the one I bring along the most), it requires you to be up out of cover for extended periods of time and for targets like Harbinger, you have to be careful that the stream is always on him.

Does the Avalanche do anything to armor/shields? I used it once then never again. d:

I'm still a hoarder. On insanity, unless you're a soldier, your class will invariably run into a battle here and there that is just going to be sort of difficult for your skillset. I like to know when those happen, Ill have a full load of heavy ammo to fall back on if things get frustrating. The only two battles I really ever break out the heavy on anymore is IFF , the endgame Reaper (since its pointless to save it anymore), Thresher Maw, and this one sequence in Garrus's recruit mission where I like to bring along the missle launcher to shoot around corners and get a Pyro that is just camping there waiting to shoot you in the face with a wad of fire.

Other than that, it just feels unnecessary to the game...I wish they had put in some sort of hand grenade mechanic instead to spice up mundane battles. Mostly though, I just forget that I have them.

Haha I know just the bit you mean. Unfortunately I tend to be a bit tight with my resources at that stage of the game and end up fighting to get a shot off and run back to cover only to get stunned and toasted.

Definitely a good example of where using the HWs is tactically beneficial rather than just doing lots of dmg.

I tend to be a hoarder too, and approach levels as if I have no HWs and break them out for a laugh more than anything. Most often I will break out the Cain for certain places, like the Praetorian on the collector ship (last time I was there I'd used it recently and only managed to get up to 90% charge...aaaarggggh!).

I always kill them with one shot, without cloaking. Every class can do that, even on Insanity. You just have to shoot them while they're crowded.

When playing the infiltrator, using the widow is like using a heavy weapon in itself

I have obsessive behaviour about medigel / heavy wep. ammo, always avoiding to spend them, but at the "reaper iff" quest in insanity i freaked out by husk hordes always surrounding my ass i made them ice cream quite relief it was.

Use cain with last boss and if u upgraded ur heavy wep. capacity fully and if u are lucky another heavy wep. ammo appears during that fight and blow the second nuke. You can fart on what is left of the reaper afterwards.

Think of the Avalanche as a rapid-fire incinerate/overload that does AoE.  It pretty much shreds shields/armor/barriers.  I took out both Scions at the same time on the IFF mission (it did cost me nearly half of my 40 ammo).

If you use the cain (twice) on the reaper in the end fight you can get it's health down to a sliver.

I hoarded LAMs and GEP rockets in Deus Ex, potions in Arcanum, and stimpaks in Fallout—what makes you think I'll suddenly get a clue and start using heavy weapons now? :-P

I dunno though... The Cerberus Assault Armor looks pretty cool, and I do like the grenade launcher. Maybe a little try. Next playthrough. Yeah, that's it, next time...

I always like busting out heavy weapons. Especially the cain. That is like a win battle button right there. Plus its just awesome seeing a small nuclear explosion. =)

I agree that if you want to take a bunch of enemies down, nothing does the job faster than a heavy weapon, and you should spam it if you want success.

But I'm a real man's man, so I don't really need a nuke strapped to my back to dominate in a fight.

I like the Cain for the harder difficulties, but when not everything has armor, I prefer to use the Blackstorm.

I've only used the Cain once - to get the achievement. I hate "skip boss" weapons like that, they detract from the experience IMO.

Play on Insanity then...it's not so much "skip boss" as "mortally wound boss" then :P
