 Hey,

I am facing a really annoying problem with the loading screens of Mass Effect 2. Here are the details:

I am running the Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 2, which I pre-ordered from www.bol.com. It's a physical copy. The problem occurs with both patch 1.0 and 1.01. These are my specs:

Intel Core2 Duo CPU T8100
2.10Ghz
3GB RAM

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
256 MB
ATI Driver Packaging Version 8.452.2

Speakers: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221
4.36.6.0

Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium  Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002)
DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later

------------------------------------------------------------

As to the problem, it's quite simple to describe. Whenever I enter a loading screen, there is a chance that the game will freeze. Technically it's not even freezing, it just cycles the last 2 frames indefinetely. No matter how long I wait, the game won't finish loading.

This problem is very random, so far I've only been able to ascertain that it doesn't occur on the ship. This might be because there just isn't a whole lot to be loaded. Other than that, it occurs completely at random. I might freeze during one screen, load up the game, and freeze on the same loading screen, or it might not and I freeze a couple of loading screens later, or anything in between.

It might help to mention that this problem occurred in Mass Effect 1 as well, to a lesser extent. This might be due to a lesser loading load, as described above. The problem is an exact copy: Whenever I am in a loading screens, there is a chance the game freezes, and continues cycling the last two frames.

I do hope something can finally be done about this problem, as it's very frustrating to keep having to start up ME2 and having to watch the same cinematic sequence again. Especially so when creating a character, as there isn't an option to save during the prologue and the chance of the game freezing during the first three loading screens is quite significant, sometimes forcing me to reproduce the physical details of my character all over again.

What are your specs? I am inclined to think the fault is related to the Graphics Card in my laptop. What laptop do you have? I have a Toshiba Satelite Pro myself.

This might be a long shot but update flashplayer, graphics drivers, sound drivers, and directx.

I also have the same problem and on top of that instead of freezing it just crashes to the desktop.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game multiple times and each time i do it works for a little while than it starts crashing or freezing again.  I am gettin very annoyed with having to do this espeically to only be able to play 1 mission each time it does this.

However instead i am running the Digital Edition but it is version 1.01

My Specs
Intel Core2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz (2CPUs), ~2.1GHz
Memory 3072MB RAM

Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT
Driver Version 8.17.11.9675

Speakers (SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio)
Driver Version 5.12.0001.2018

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
DirectX Version 11

Try what I suggested in my other post and then empty your temp folders.

Please get rid of that driver.  It has been justifiably accused of backwards cooling fan function, and was withdrawn.

I'm using 186.14 (I think, but that's the 8600 GTS's driver, and the 8800 might be something else) -- I'm also still running DA: O occasionally, and that game argues with Geforce drivers like crazy. I think I had 185.-something on the 8800 for awhile (PC in the bedroom that I haven't been using as much since I got an HD 4850 in a PC here in this converted former bedroom that is now the "Computer Room".

I was running an HD 3850 on that bedroom PC, but I got a steal of a deal on a NIB Gigabyte 8800 GT for it (I got three new cards over the winter, none from a current generation, though).

What were you using prior to the 196.75? If it was working nicely enough for you, use it again until you find it no longer works so nicely.

At this point, the quickest way (IMO) to narrowing down the vector for the problem is using a Clean Boot pocedure.  Log off of any game-related sites, shut down the 'Net (unplug modem or LAN - they are the same here at my place), and follow the procedures outlined on Microsoft's web site for your version of Windows.  I still use WindowsXP for games, and in fact, still use Win2K for ordinary web surfing (simpler, faster, more familiar).

Be sure to shut off all PM-ing and AV-ing software.  Several AV products out there give games a major headache, and so does the Xfire PM product.  I use Avast, without conflicts, and eschew the IM / PM stuff.

If there is no problem with the game running clean like that, it's not the driver by itself.  If there still is a problem, keep rolling back until the problem goes away.  Only after settling on a driver, then start adding your day to day background products into the mix, slowly.
