Sure get everything done before you get the IFF...and once you get it you have just enough time to do Legion's loyalty mission and then the Collectors show up.

After getting the iff my brother was able to do 2 missions b4 the collectors attk the normandy

Yes.  While you have limited missions before the kidnapping, the crew life countdown doesn't occur until they are taken.

Once they are taken, you need to go through the relay immediately.  Do not pass go.  Do not collect minerals.  Do not land on a planet.

You can, however, perform any upgrades that you have minerals for.
