Is it just me or are the allies in the final battle not all that necessary inside Denerim? I called them just for the hell of it, but you don't really need to do that. Other than some cannon fodder against the Archdemon, I'm not sure what purpose they really serve. Am I out to lunch on this one?

No, I don't think you're out to lunch. I never used them until the final encounter in my first run through the game. Second time, I never used them at all.

Nah they are completely unneeded, which is odd seeing as how the entire game was based around recruiting them.

Yeah first time through I never used them until the arch demon was at half health, I kept thinking ill use them when I need them, but I never did... Was abit of a letdown really

Oh good, I thought it was just me. I didn't use them either, but just figured I didn't need them because I was playing on Easy. Playing through on Normal now, so we'll just see.

I really need a mod where the final battles are against level-scaled darkspawn (like in the rest of the game...), rather than 1-hit-wonder darkspawn grunts. *But* still keeping the superior numbers of the Ds forces.
Then, I'd actually have a reason to summon my ally armies.

I play on Hard and in my first playthrough I didn't even know I could summon allies until after I got to the first DS general and my party got wiped a few times. Then I fiddled around with the menu and found the option... I found them useful enough.
The first time I fought the Archdemon, I went through the whole battle without realizing that I could still summon allies. ~_~ I killed it, though, and it actually wasn't extraordinarily difficult. I used them in my second playthrough against the AD, though.

Not only completely unneeded, but frankly didn't seem to help all that much when I had them. I deployed the Redcliff soldiers against the General in the Alienage and they just died a lot. The elves at Fort Drakon gates (by FAR the most difficult part of the end sequence to me) didn't die much but didn't do much either. Put the mages up against the Archdemon...probably helped some but it was hard to tell.

Dwarves are the only ones worth their salt.
Mages have too much friendly fire, and are more liability than asset, Redcliffers die too easily, most of the fights are in areas that are too enclosed for the dalish to really shine... thus the Dwarves are it.
Templars, Wolves, and Golems might be good. Not sure.
I only ever use them in phase three of the Archdemon fight, however.

they are unneeded in some areas, i would say outside fort dragon is when i really needed them, the 4 emisarrys that are their and the dragons can rape you party if your not careful about it, but i think the best soldiers to use are either the elves or mages for their ranged abilities, plus they dont die anywere near as quickly

with my first playthrough i didn't even know you could call them by clicking on their portraits. lol.
Golems are very powerful. you only need 4

well, they may not be too useful in the final battle (if they were what's the point of fighting the arch-demon yourself?) but if not for them you and your little party are facing off against a few thousand darkspawn by yourself, so think of recruiting from the treaties as a way to keep the army off your back.

I've payed with and without them. Now I generally just call the elves in to fight the AD, since they are good at killing any darkspawn that get 'stuck' at spawn, and when they aren't doing that they are free damage on the AD. Not necessary, but it helps lazy people like me.

A few thousand level 1 Darkspawn, I'd rather have fought them myself, might have actually made the end game more than a snooze ride down zzzzzz's lane

I find em useful actually. Once the Archdemon calls in all those darkspawn halfway through the fight I use the allies to deal with them while I just chip away at the Archdemon's health
