and cannot be loaded.  Is there any tip or trick to get past this or am I just hosed?  This particular save is the guy I wanted to import into Awakenings, so I'd really like to recover him if possible.

Samething just happened to me.. It's my second play through and I never experienced anything like this on the first run.. this run I'm going for the traveler achievement.. ****ing hell just lost an hour of gameplay. I have currently done about 80% of the side quests + all the missions before the landsmeet, will this happen again? :S

You've probably encountered one of the most serious unpatched bugs in the Xbox 360 version of the game. The most common cause is selling too many items to a single vendor, causing the vendor's inventory to overflow. You can read more in the following discussion thread:

yup. one of the many bugs that they STILL HAVE NOT PATCHED in this broken ass game. Im beyond frustrated. Its been 4 months since release. I stopped playing almost immediately after release waiting for a patch for the dex bug and the plethora of other bugs including this save bug i kept hearing about. Theres been no real response. The PC got a patch, but to hell with us console players i guess

I finally just emailed EA asking for an answer and mentioning that i have yet to purchase ME2 because of this shoddy customer support and am about to give up on Bioware entirely, despite the fact that it used to be one of my favorite developers (KOTOR was one of my fave xbox games and ME1 IS my favorite 360 game)

I already boycot EA games, with only a couple in my collection. If i wind up writing off bioware im going to just totally write off EA too.

I was afraid EA getting bioware would drag them down and that seems to be the case

who knows, maybe i'll actually get a real answer but i doubt it

That really blows. That guy was about perfect; level 25, 1100 gold (used the crystals to bump that, and maybe that was the cause), had the exact gear I wanted, was the perfect import candidate for Awakenings. The thing is, I did the crystals early on, and hadn't done it for several days (playing and saving each day) and had no problems. Then after killing the dragon and watching the epilogue, I get the error. I'll end up rolling that guy again but it's really disappointing.

Unfortunately you just answered your own question.

But why would it only effect it at the end of the game?  I saved and loaded those saves successfully dozens of times between the last time I sold a bunch of crystals and finishing the game.

It happened to me and it has pissed me off because it was my best character so far. I had about 47 hours and I was in Orzammar, I never used the crystal glitch but I did use the Wardens Keep level up item glitch. I also sold pretty much all my unwanted to the camp vendor so I think it must be that which is causing the problem.
