People don't have to like JRPGs but even if they lack innovation they are adding variety to the RPG genre by just existing. Variety=Good.

So no, I don't hope it'll fail. I'll be getting it. I like my fix of wrpg and jrpg. As long as it's a good game I don't care if it's from the west or from the east.

I think my thread has been misunderstood. I don't want it to fail just out of spite for Square/Enix, I want it to fail in hopes that it will cause Square/Enix to rethink their strategy.  I used to like JRPGs but they cannot hold a candle to the likes of Bioware these days.  The problem I have with JRPGs is their over-emphasis on cinematic JRPG meoldrama which just no longer does anything for me after being spoiled by the fully interactive plots of WRPGs like in Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
The plots in Bioware games are well written and mature and I just cannot stand the same cliched, trite story of an adolescent saving the world that has been recycled time and time again in every JRPG that gets released.
I think Final Fantasy XIII won't fail in the sense that it won't be profitable but I think if it falls a bit below expectations that may be enough for Square/Enix to break away from the formula that has long since grown stale.

My wanting Final Fantasy XIII to fail isn't about some fanboy JRPG VS WRPG rivalry.  It's about JRPGs rekindling the interest of myself and many others who have long since abandoned Square.

Ahh, my apologies, I may have misunderstood ya. I love good FMVs, but I also agree that FMVs cannot substitute for good story & gameplay. Maybe someday there will be games that are like interactive FMVs & we can get the best of both worlds, but until then, FMVs need to compliment the game, not substitute for it.

I have no problem with teenage heroes, but at the same time, teenage heroes 24/7 will get old, I agree with that. Variety ftw!

eerrrhuh if unite the 4 kingdoms and kill the Dragon = not cliched, and

Medieval-European themes and Elves and Dwarves = not recycled time and time again,

then all your opinions are pretty invalid IMNVHO. :alien:

Please do come back when you've found a WRPG that is not based off of what Tolkien wrote almost 80 years ago or what Dungeons & Dragons established over 30 years ago.

On paper the plot behind Dragon Age seems like a cliche but once you go into depth there really is a wealth of original lore and more importantly likable companions to learn about in Dragon Age.  It's not just premise, it's execution and Dragon Age's plot is executed exceptionally well.  In Bioware games you actually care about the characters because your actions help shape their personalities.

JRPGs are never like this and that is why they feel more like boring interactive movies.

With Final Fantasy, everything just seems to be random and sloppy and the plots become overly convoluted and melodramatic.
I can't remember the last time I had played a JRPG and actually enjoyed the storyline.

Actually, maybe I can. Dragon Quest VIII had an enjoyable storyline mostly because it didn't take itself too seriously and had great humor.

That is a problem with too many JRPGs, they feel pretentious.  It's hard to take a RPG's plot seriously when you have high school students destroying giant robots with their bare hands just out of virtue of having main character super powers.

Final Fantasy 7 may be for you then. The main character is Cloud Strife, & he's not a teenager, he's a young adult! :P

I played & beat DQ8. Hard as heck, but barrelloads of fun! :o

Lastly, I agree that it's sweet for your actions to have so much influence on your companions & your environment! It's more realistic & immersive that way. If your actions don't appear to have consequences or effect, then how is it supposed to feel like you're a part of the game world?

^ This. ★

Watch without bias or skipping.

That one relatively-short sequence of Final Fantasy XIII conveys the feeling of something more intense and epic transpiring than Dragon Age did in its final few hours, even with that kind-of-forced twist with the sacrifice and the loophole.

You'll notice the flawlessly-seamless integration of battles and cutscenes, the camera's movement during those, along with the events scripted into the main play engine, like the explosions etc. All coming together to form a noticeably more intense sequence than the last couple hours of DA:O, IMO (especially near the end of that video where you can definitely get a sense of something epic transpiring even if you may not understand what they're saying. DA kept falling short of the tension required to generate such a rise, except during the encounters with Loghain and where the other Warden fails, and maybe the BM build-up in the DR.)

oh and did I mention the memorable music? ♪ <3

To adapt the lovely example of the previous poster, Bioware could package up faeces, slap a made by Bioware logo on it, and their games would still sell like hotcakes :-|

I just want to point out that Jade Empire didn't do very well for them. It sold decently enough but was far from a chart topping title. This was following their amazing commercial success with KotOR; which one would think earned them lots of points with blind shoppers. I don't think BioWare can ride on name recognition alone.

Personally, I blame the late PC port (though excellent it may be) and the fact that the original X-box wasn't as main-stream as the 360 was.

I don't own a PS3 yet and I don't have a good enough PC, to play FF13, MGS4, DA:O or ME(2). However, for the sake of my gaming experience whenever time comes for me to own a PS3 and a brand new PC, I hope all the games I like and buy, kick ass.

I don't hope it fails, I just ignore games like Final Fantasy. I personally hate Eastern games and Anime. I find them absolutely horribly written, overall corny, and just terrible. I pretty much only play Western games. Usually RPGs, Shooters, and Music games are my top genres (once in a while a sandbox).

Whats not to like about Final Fantasy games!?

Besides the fact since seven, the main character seems to a be a boarder line mentally retarded whine-o who has the personality of a sugar cube?

Sorry, but playing games where the art direction makes you half wounder, If the art directors are boarder line pedophiles and all around perverts who over sex all there characters....Is not my idea of a good time.

On this fact makes me hope the game fails.,,besides the fact the story's are stupid and make no sense.

(spoony experiment) critic pretty much nails why I hate the Final Fantasy Games.

I feel sorry for people that feel the need to obsses constantaly over games they have little to no interest in playing.

I am no fan of MMO's but I do not obsess about wanting them or the companies making them to fail. Whats the point? I do not like them so I do not play them and avoid the extra stress of hating something I have no interest in. Theres plenty out there that like them and it does not hurt me in any way.

It seems a few of you are too self centered and think that every game released needs to suit yours and only your tastes in video games.

Absolutely this.

And, you know, there are many other "Let's all hate on the JRPGs / FF XIII" threads out there.

Seriously - can't you be happy with the games you like and let other people like the games they like?  Does everything have to be entertaining to selfish, self-centered, egotistical little you?

Does everything have to boil down to "Hey, I like X!  I like X alot!!! How can I show how much I like X?  I know, I'll find something else, a Y, that I can point at and ridicule.  THAT will show everyone how much I like X!"

Stupid, stupid sports / religion / politics engendering all this crappy "us vs. them" mentality.

It's a false dichotomy.  You don't need to hate FF to like BG2, or hate FPS to like CRPG.

Take a deep breath.

Is it REALLY that productive and fun to bash and get people's backs up?  Really?  What level of maturity do you think that projects?

Different flavors for different tastes. To each their own.

The problem is when someone decides not to respect other peoples taste. It's not cool. Hate something all ya want, but please respect other peoples freedom to have their own taste in video game flavors. Variety is specifically designed for this in the wisdom that no single flavor suits all.

Just for an update now that I am finally playing the game-

6 hours in, so I've not seen that much of it yet, but...

I had big time worries but was very excited - and I'm loving it so far. The pacing, the characters, the graphics, the cut scenes, the combat system, the story, the back story, the menus... so far, a little bit better than I had hoped.

But this is only 6 hours in - let's see how I feel 20 hours in, and then how I feel after I finish it.

I'm diggin' it right now, but I can't stand any of the characters except for Sazh. Hopefully this changes as I haven't been able to spend long hours with the game yet, but damn. Really annoying cast so far.

Nah, they're all pretty horrible, Hope almost gets better for a bit, but by the end he's even worse than he started out. Some of the cutscenes will having you laughing in embarassment.I finished it a couple of days ago, fun game, not a lot of fun after you beat it though, killing marks is boring.

Yeah, if you've ever had the displeasure of watching Naruto, he ends up pretty much acting like the main character in that.

That's sad to tell you the truth. I guess it was to much to hope for , but I really wanted to see Hope go a different direction than the typical over the top shonen hero. Can't really explain why I thought that, I mean, I knew I was playing a FF game. Still, I am disappoint.

Her accent and tone of voice are either crazy annoying or kinda cute, not sure which yet.

I appreciated her weirdness and deviation from the pervasive mopiness that you see in a good portion of the game. She eventually becomes a lifeless cliche too though.

I think that JRPG are just that JRPG's why mess with a formula if it works and sells well over and over again Bioware does the same thing they just make improvement to their formula just as Squaresoft does for its formula . I mean all RPG's have the same story lines which is save the world from certain doom and be the hero. All that really separate one RPG from the next is the lore and world in which the game is based on. I mean all Bioware's games are the same the only thing that gets better are the graphics and voice acting. The only Bioware game that is a little different is the Mass Effect trilogy only reason being is your character Sheppard actually has a real voice not just dialog choices. I was a little disappointed when I started DA:O and found that your character doesnt have his own voice. But all in all its a fun game and so is FF series. FFVII was the game that got me really into RPG. Then the Baldur's Gate series got me into D&D video games any one remember Spell Jamer now when are they gonna remake that fun game. In closing why do people hate on games its simple either you like to play it or you dont why hate on it.

I have to disagree about the characters - I'm actually really enjoying all of them. I probably like Hope and Sazh the least, if I had to get nitpicky, mostly because Hope is so far acting exactly like the kind of character I hate - the one's who get right up to the point of doing something dramatic, then keep stepping back at the last minute because they aren't ready. Sazh is just, well, again this is nitpicky because I do like him mostly, but he's just kind of there as the "oh, we escaped the train, guess I run in the same direction as this girl - oh, you're going into a dangerous place with a dangerous creature, and I know it's dangerous, I'm telling you it's dangerous, oh I'll go with you anyway..."

Everyone else's motivations and actions feel just fine to me so far - except Hope's and Sazh's. But, again, only like 6 hours in so I'm sure they'll develop into something else (or maybe I'll learn to dislike Vanille's cheeriness that I'm actually loving right now.)
