Star Wars - space ships and laser swords
Godfather - people killing each other over money
Casablanca - two people who don't end up together
Citizen Kane - a rich man who dies never being happy
Wizard of Oz - homesickness
You can do it with characters and real people, too -
Batman - an orphan in tights
King Arthur - a guy with a sword
Wolverine - beserker with blades
George W. Bush - a politician
Revan - a bad guy with a laser sword
The Nameless One - amnesiac protagonist
Case - a hacker
Martin Luther King, Jr. - a preacher
Alexander the Great - an ancient Macedonian warrior
If you complain about characters in a game and your argument is boiling the character down to a throwaway description, it's not much of an argument.
For me, so far, now that I'm over 20 hours into the story I really like EVERYONE, even Sazh who I wasn't liking at first because (outside of Chocobo chick) he was just there to tag along.
Maybe the characters seem cliche or ineffective to some people, but for me I'm deeper into these characters than I was (sorry Bioware) for Mass Effect 2 or Dragon Age. Even though I'm pretty sure, at this point, that ME2 and DAO are games I would rank much, much higher than FF XIII overall.
FF XIII is telling a different kind of story - and I think that bothers many FF fans, as it isn't the typical FF story in many ways.
It's a character driven story, with the outside events and villains and such not much more (at least where I am in the game) than McGuffins to move the characters forward and give them something to act against.
