I don't know - maybe people plan vacation times around game releases so they can stay home & play.

@Sam, As it is now release dates are staggered NA dates are never the same as Europe, and Oz. This is my point - why bother with these?? When the product arrives at the shops, retailers should just sell it... Makes no sense to me.
I'm also taking a guess here, but it may have more to do with the business, marketing and promotion from the store's perspective. Some release dates of certain products are huge and stores can have special promotions and tie-ins that not only affect the featured product, but can also increase overall sales of other items in the store.

Yeah, but at least you have only two release dates, one for NA and one for Europe.
1. First of all, that allows to create a stock of games. Games are not produced and stored by the producer until all copies are made, but shipped to the retailers. That is, if you sell it out the day it arrives, some shops might sell earlier simply cause they got the first copies while others have to wait until theirs are done.
2. This will inevitably lead to sold outs. And a sold out, especially short after release, is never a good idea for the image of the Company.
3. Especially the small stores, already under heavy pressure by the big internet shops, will be the disadvantaged and most likely fade into oblivion pretty soon.
4. You have the spoiler issue, eve more than now. If you as an European want to avoid spoilers, avoid certain internet sites for two or three days and you're fine. If everyone can sell when it arrives, you comrade, neighbour, friend might already play while you're still waiting.
5. That last point inevitable creates jealousy, and that will also inevtably will be directed at the company in the end (why did that one has his game and i do not) which will also result in image loss.
I agree the current system is far from perfect, but better than a wild & free release

In a way yes. I had some days left that i wanted to take before Christmas at the end of the year, and so i decided instead of just taking a few hours here and there to get ir rid, i could as well make the best of it and take a leave with DAO release and play it through intensively.
So yes, in a way i took a holiday to play DAO, though i would not have done without the special circumstances that i had some days left i had to take

@Sam, I can say with 100% certainty, my neighbours cannot give a toss if I receive a game before they do.....Jealousy over a game release has to the most idiotic thing.....
maybe for you, but sorry to say, you & we and nor the targeted audience, it's the high school kids or, with more mature games, college kids who generate the big revenue. And for them, jealousy is an issue, and therefore it also is for the company.
@Twiggles: yes, i was lucky so to speak.

Do you think that'll ever change? You would think that someone would figure out it was those who were teens in the 80's when video games were invented for the masses (and that generation) that are now in their late 30's & 40's that still want to play and so they'd start to develop for a market that's already built, so to speak.

Yes i do believe it will change, but it will take time. Just look at the current debate: i still remember the Fox News when Mass Effect came out cause there was a Sex scene and it was bad for kids. That as an incredible piece of crap and bulls**t, even for Fox, and there standards are already extremly low if you ask me. I was unsure the whole time if should laugh or cry (the Expert was probably the best *shakes head*)
There are still too much people who influence the debate who do not grow up with video games. It will get better the older the people get who are accustomed with video games. Give it ten or 20 more years. The industry is already showing some signs of change towards a more mature audience, but it will take more time

10 - 20 years! Arghhhh...my arthritis might kick-in by then and I won't be able to play! lol
I sometimes think how different I am from my parents. I mean I can't imagine my parents playing games on the computer, but that's pretty normal for me!
