The title of the topic is "Just got Awakenings and wow dose it suck..." and the reason for the complaining is:
" The storyline just moves way to fast"

I don't like to give bad news.. I'm still trying to find good news...
We hope for good news from you Twiggles....

You know, i recently read a thread about that mysterious date 02.01.2011 and there are many people claiming if it'S DA 2 it can only be bad cause it'S too early, EA sucks in general and all of this.

Don't know why. I can't wait for DA 2, i want to know more of this beautiful universe, and if they offer me that, i'm happy, excited and looking forward. The game itself has to convince it's bad, not the other way around as this people that it's good.

Unless i see for myself, i'm excited and happy, and then i will see for myself.

Oh, and if they really announce the sequel with the Warden, i think i'm going out and get drunk lol

At least Evil Chris made it clear that was no accident but was done on purpose, so i think we will learn more about that in the near future

Because people knows that the develop time of Awakening was 1 year...

Therefore they think that 1 year is not enough time to dev a great game like DAO...

And I must confess you that I have the same fear...

I just hope that 01.02.2011 will be the date of realease of a 2nd expansion and to not hear talking about DA2 until winter 2011-spring 2012...

How do we know Awakening was developed one year?

The things i know is that the PC edition of DAO was about to be released in march last year, but was then postponed to simultaneous release with the console editions in November.

That means, the Writers had at least six months previous to that to start writing an new things, which would date back to October/November 2008.

Sometime in between, Awakening was developed, but xpac's generally take about six months.

That would mean short of 2 years of development for the new stand alone game, and even if the time was shorter: BW is huge, and with the ressources of "Evil-EA", they have the ressources to pull off a stand alone game in that timeframe

No.. you are wrong.. DA:O was ready in February 2009.. It went out so late because there were porting problem on PS3.. These problems delayed the release of the game on all platforms, but the game was ready in Feb 2009 and the dev team had already finished... and they began immediately to work on Awakening.. Therefore Awakening was developed in about 1 year... Here the reason because I think/hope in Feb 2011 it will be just another expansion....

But that's even better. The writer's are about the first to be finished in game development, because al others depend on them to work (with the exceptions of the Desingers maybe). So if DAO was finished in Februar 2009, the writers and designers were finished way earlier.
That also means they could have started writing back in 2008, and therefore could be writing some more time on the new game.
And even if they didn't and only have one year to make that game: I like DAO, i love it, and i'm looking forward to see my love again if that might happen. Don't you feel the same about Leliana?
I'm rather happy and looking forward for my love and closure to the story and new DA stuff than worrying about they might produce a bad game because of the lack of time

How many years did they work on DAO?!

Do you really think they will be able in just 1 year to create such a great game?

I have more than one doubt...

Trust me.. It's better wait just few times more in order to have a better game, than have a decent game every 1 year....

Maybe this is the right place to ask this, cause I can't remember what the answer was. Can I buy the store version of Awakening and have it work fine with my Steam version of DA:O? Since my internet is so damn sllow the only way for me to get good download speed is to take my computer to a friends house, and I don't like to impose like that (friends or not, it gets a little awkward).

Well max they did have to spend years on the engine, they even said they tested some of the levels in the old neverwinter nights engine to see if the levels worked. Once the tecknology is "done" the rest can be assembled in 1-2 years quite easily since the developers are used to the toolset and that they can create and not just attempt to kill bugs in the processes in the background. Still 1.5 years is not a lot between games, but since dao is not as programming heavy for 1 hour of gameplay as for instance just about any shooter I do not think it is that unlikely that they can create something wicked till march 2011... we'll know once we have it on our harddrives or in our consoles :)

And for the steam users the game has now been added to the my games tab, so it seems at least that they are preparing it for launch atm :D The release clock disappeared on the store page though, so when I will be able to get my hands on it remains a mystery :?

At least my 100mbit cable will dl it fast

@mr.skar I think it was that the store version of DAO would not work with the steam version of awakening but steam dao works with retail awakening... but I cannot recall where I read this or if I even recall correctly so I would suggest searching in the forums.

Edit: Found this on the steam support forums:

To all you folk who want to retail DA:O Awakening, and to
silly folk who say not to.

If you wish to buy awakening from
retail, but your copy of DA:O

is from Steam, don't worry; there is no reason not to go ahead

and get it.

When you install Awakening it will automatically detect your

steam installation and work around it accordingly. Once it's been

installed, you can access awakening via booting up DA:O and

activating it via "Other Campaigns", in the main menu screen.

Awakening is NOT a stand alone game, it leeches off the core game

files and installation, think of it as a much bigger DLC. This

is what allows it to bypass the steam installation.

To those of you misleading people claiming that they cannot use

retail Awakening with a Steam DA:O, please do more research in

the future. The "Requires a Steam version of Dragon Age: Origins"

that appears on the Steam Page for Awakening, applies ONLY to the

steam version of Awakening, as steam itself takes care of the

download and installation of files, and does not have the

authority to install outside of the Steam Folder.

Enjoy the game!

But there is an answer of one dude who claims it does not work and one that claims it does... so certainty I woul not guarantee

They created DAO from 2004 to 2009, so roughly 5 years.
But they invented DAO from the scratch
1. they created a complete new world, lore and universe out of the air. That alone took around 2 two or three years
2. they created a role playing system. BG & BG 2 was based on D & D rules. This time, they invented their own system
3. They created a complete new engine for the game.

Nothing of this has to be done again. The lore and universe is fixed, and i take every bet they have more then just a general idea about upcoming plots and some important characters. They have to work that out, of course, and tweak it, but the framework is completely there.
The same is true for roleplaying system and graphic engine.
The framework is completely done: in the first game they had to build a house, this time they only have to change the interior. And that's a huge difference in workload and time.
And i wouldn't be surprised if that stand alone game isn't in the development even longer than we assume. They spent 5 years of money and ressources on DAO without any revenue. That's a long time, and my guess is that even as the topseller that DAO is, it's not enough to compensate for the money they spent in that 5 years.
That's not so rare, companies do this, to establish a franchise that will make them money in the long run. But then they also make some kind of paralell development so that future games and thereofre the money they need to replenish their losses is not years away. So i wouldn't be surprised id that stand alone game was at least partly in paralell development with DAO for a quite some time.

Look at DAO and the two books yet published. They arer so intertwined, so many open arcs that could be related, that was left open on purpose because they had more than just a faint idea what will happen next. DAO was build and intended to have a successor, and they already had that successor in mind while making the game, you feel that everywhere throughout the game.

I'm worried they won't let us play the Warden, won't let us meet old friends, won't give us closure, but not that they do not have enough time to make a proper game

Sounds good, making me all redicolously excited...damnit xD On the steam forums it is now clear that the game has been released in north america, but it taunts us europeans with "not yet released" instead of "not installed" <_<

So...frustrating...soooo desperate.... argh

Thx for the update Twiggles.

Edit: i have just found this post from David Gaider on the whole "one year is not enough issue, i think i just post that here:

Here
I am with more pessimism.

Awakening has been the main focus of
the team's active development for about a full year (since Origins was
complete last spring, then delayed by the console release).

The
scope of Awakening would seem to show what this team can create in one
year.

The next Dragon Age game, rumored to be a full sequel, is
set for release less than a year from now.

Which would seem to
suggest that it is likely to be roughly of the same scope as this
expansion.

This is true...

...if the team working
on it were the same size.

Oh, I know, I know, the sky is falling
and all that. Sorry to interrupt. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]
