this will definitely postpone my installation of 1.03 and Awakening until the problems are resolved with a hotfix or patch..

Let me see if I can put it in perspective...played for about 5 hours with 2 crashes. Would have been ok if I saved more, which is just a problem I have playing all games - get too involved & forget to save. Game started right back up with no problems.

I play with a finger attached on quicksave on all my games :P.

Morning everyone

Thx for the updates Twiggles, guess you are still alseep for a while after playing all night ^_^

For everyone who is already playing or will be playing Awakening shortly and has some opinion on the new dialogue system, check this thread. Right now, the lead writer is still paying attention, and if you can give a reasoned explanation what you like/dislke and why, it's worth a shot.

This is what I added to that thread

I am adding my .02 cents as well

The new party conversation system. So far, it feels loney. The lacking of spur of the moment interaction "when I feel like it" And getting to know you stuff is greatly missed.

Overall, this new system feels lonely, cold, impersonal, and heavily scripted. Removing the freedom of random conversation "which is much more natural" created an empty feeling in my game play.

I think a hybrid between the two might work, but this 180 degree switch left me feeling VERY uninterested in caring about my companions.

Regards

Hey Vampilicious :-)

I think the crashes are most likely associated with 1.03 patch bugs, hopefully 1.03b is around the corner and will solve some of the issues (crashing seems to be a frequent reported bug with 1.03, which Awakenings patches DA to even if you haven't previously patched your game).

I posted this a page back or to and might help with the other DLC items with any new PCs you play Awakenings with, it should allow you to port you DLC items in.  It does make you wonder why BioWare couldn't do this themselves if a modder could do it in less then a day of Awakenings release, was it really such huge technical issue after all?

www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php

Because those are not exactly the same items, even if they have the same description and stats. Those are new items done with the toolset and added through a mod with the stats and text copied from DLC items. Everybody can do that... on PC, and Bioware wouldn't have any problem doing that, again on PC.
But to bring the DLC items on consoles too, Bioware should have to add DLC checking on Awakening games. Now it checks RtO but not the others. That's more difficult, and of course you can't do it with the toolset.

And they're not going to add them only on PC and not on Xbox and PS3.

But isn't it strange that this was not done during the development of Awakenings alongside the DLC work, they were different teams, but ultimately part of the same group working on DA.  Couldn't they have taken the items developed in the DLCs and ensured they were incorporated into Awakenings as both were being developed alongside each other?

Same with the specs and abilities to working backwards, it just feels more like a NWN module in many ways then an expansion (in NWN and NWN2 expansions all classes, abilities and spells worked in earlier campaigns as well).  I get the feeling from all this that Awakenings was rushed to meet a deadline, when they should have delayed it to get these things worked out (such as enabling all DLC not just RtO to function, allowing specs to work backwards creating more replay value for Origins, and allowing the US to work as original intended, which was the original purpose in the Orlesian Warden according to the devs way back)

Yes me too... When I play I become really compulsive with quicksave key..
The problem to be so compulsive is that sometimes I make a quicksave even when I should not make a QS.. lol

I am going to go play for a while. I am only 4 hours into the game. I got to sleepy last night :) I'll be back later...

EDIT>  I have had no crashes at all. There are a couple areas that made my brand new computer choke a bit though. Which was rediculous. "pets her computer" She knows it was not her fault.

There is just a question.. If I am a writer would I begin immediately to write the new story? Wouldn't it be better to wait and see what the community think about the story, what it's complaining for, what are their favorite characters and so on?

Let's image for a moment we are the lead writer of Dragon Age Origins...I figured out the history to be continued in some way.. After the game is sold.. what a surprise!! There is a character which we decided to make disappear who had a great hype, and we weren't expecting it..
He/she's the favourite character of the community... Most of the players ask he/she come back... What should we do then?

That's why I said 90% ;).
Of course they tweak the writting after knowing what the community thinks. But really, they shouldn't force it too much or else they wouldn't be able to make many games, and completely following what the community says instead of your writing instincts isn't a good idea; while this is a product they want to sell it's also a work of art. Besides, it's quite clear after playing DA:O that they have many things in mind left unclosed for future games. For example, Morrigan (and his son if he's there) will appear one way or another in the future. I don't know when or how but I think it's quite clear we'll see more of her.

Yes, that's true. This is clearly an error on their part.

@Max,

Regarding game writing... The DA concept has been in the works for quite sometime. I am sure the entire DA story and world has been story-boarded, with various bits and pieces in various stages of development. I am sure the complete major story-line has been written.

Bioware does not write and develop Origins, then stop everything to wait for reaction in order to begin writing again.... It would take 5 years between games if that was the case...

Bioware already has the story, it is a matter of how many resources are brought in that governs the time span between game releases, i.e. 1 team = 3years, 3 teams = 1 year, for example

Best quotes in New Dialogue's System Thread
I want to shake hands with this guy..

The last sentence is epic and...
Sam & Pyrex.. I have his same feelings....here's the reason of my pessimism

"Well just my opion
The best thing in dragon age and the one which differentiate it from action rpg is the dept of character interaction.
We have a lot of rpg that give you big monsters beatiful armor and weapons.
To be straigh, many other games are way better in regard to this elements.
Dragon age become the rpg of the year cause of alistair, morrigan leliana zevran and sten (mainly).
Dragon age for sure contains a lot of action, a lot of killing and looting (well not a lot of looting...)but aldo the possibility, if tired of fights, to stop everywhere and just chat with your favourite character.
This added a lot of immersion cause like in real life you can simply stop and ask something about him/her.
I really don't understand how you don't understand that THIS part of the game was the soul of dragon age. I'm shocked when you describr such an important part of dragon age "laundry list".
A lot of people said, it has not the best graphics, it has not a lot of armors and weapons but wow the story, the world are so beautiful.
A lot of reviewers mentioned that element as the most important in the game.
Now you decided to strip this element from the game.
Well, i think that the new conversations system is wrong. I don't like it and for sure i'm not ready to buy a game like this.
Definitely i expected ten years to find a game that can replace bg2 in my hearth of gamer and i found it in dragon age.
I suppose that another ten yeasr will be required to have another game like this.
I know that bioware is in search of customers in the area of " i want better armor, god mode items a lot of blood and no stupid interactions...it's o boring to talk with characters"
Well god luck cause i'm pretty sure that your core customers aren't into this category."

That's something completely different. I was talking about developing times, not the new dialogue system. From what I've heard of it I think I'll prefer the Origins system, but I'll wait to play the game to voice my opinion.

By the way, that guy mentions BG2... well, in BG2 you didn't have a camp, neither could you initiate conversation with your current party members ;).

I loved it, but we tend to remember the games we liked some years ago as something better than they were.

Mine now was a generic talking.... and I was talking about the quality of future realeases...

I cannot forget that when I read Bioware I read also "Electronic Arts"
And when I read "EA" I read also "games for the mass"
And when I read "games for the mass" I read "consolles"
And when I read "consolles" I read "action and hack'n slash"

We all know classic RPG won't work well on Consolles
EA want its game would work well also on consolles
What will be the final result?
Game which would be more action and hack'n & slash and less RPG as long as the years will go on.....

And concerning the new dialogue system now my conspirancy-suspicious nature come out....

I'd like to be a friend of David Gaider and in front of a beer ask him

"Hey David, ok what you wrote in the forum about this new feature... Now... Forget for a moment to be an Official from BW and that you have to justify in someway the new guidlines EA gave you
Tell me.. what is you REAL thought?"

my guess is he really believes in it. EA does not interfer in such details.

From a certain point of view, i can understand him. It took them years to make Origins, they must have played the games numerous times, same dialouge, same characters, revise them, and all over again. As a creative being, you want to do somwthing new and live your creativity. So from that point fo view, i can understand why they changes the dialogue system, introduced new characters and all this. It's the drive to make something cool and new and not spend another one or two years with the same things. It's only human and more than understandable to me.

The other site is, the players have not spent the last years so close with all of that, and they are not yet ready or willing to move on, and that naturally creates some tension between them. Both have their points, and both are right, and probably can understand each other to some degree, and yet they can't come together

EA does not interfer in any single details...
But as I said before EA can surely send a guideline saying
"OK people..nice job. Now for future release more action and less RPG. Yours faithfully."
Therefore.. first reunion of creative team.. "Less RPG for future releases... where do we begin? Ok..We need to reduce the dialogues.. Let's begin to think a new dialogue system....and let's begin to think also a way to justify this change to all classic RPG lovers..."

@ Sir Samcelot. No spoiler here. However!! Promise me something if you will humor me? There is a small scenario in the game that may make you laugh! And think of the good ole Asylum here. :) Let me know when you play, if you notice it? "smiles sweetly"

Bioware, where "good, people will blame EA instead of us" happens.

BTW, one thing is not liking this new dialogue system, which I think will happen to me, and another is saying that they've reduce the dialogues. They haven't. Again, from what I've read everywhere.

Oh, and the only think EA tells BW is "produce money". That's it. Since they're doing it, EA is happy with BW as is.

But i can't go home at the moment, have to finish this here. LEt'S see how the day ends up and how i feel tomorrow, maybe i stay home in bed.

But back ontopic, now you made me curious what kind of moment will be there, but i will send you a pm that very moment i notice something that might remind me you that asylum here

I am on a little gaming break.   ((No real spoilers))

I thought I'd share a bit more.

Other than feeling a bit deflated by the conversation system and having to rebuild approval with Oghren. I am having fun. The conversation system is not a total bust. but I truly feel a hybrid would do it justice. Still give us our "Get to know you" opportunities, and implement the new system. This would work quite well.

Anders...  omg I adore him!

Oghren... he is still Ogren

Nathanial Howe....  HUGE surprise with him. I did not see this one coming.

The female dwarf  (I am terrible remembering names)  . I just got her in my party, so no real opinion yet.

Still have other companions to find. I am taking my time and trying to be thorough as possible. Also. Think I missed a puzzle cuz I was unsure what to do with it.

I HATE crafting. I think they put far to much emphasis in it for those who do not like to bother much.

I love love love the goings-on at the Vigils Keep. You have some nifty things going on there and it has been fun

I just encountered my first major battle and it took me 4 times to get it done.  LOL

Anyway. I hope I kept that spoiler free enough..
