For US programmes, I like a lot of the HBO stuff: Sopranos, Six feet under, Carnival, Californication, etc. Also like Mad Men and Dexter... Also really liked The Wire - prob the best cop drama series ever made...

Cheers!!! I loved most of those!!!!!  Carnival sadly ended short. That was on freaky cool show!!!

On satellite telly here (Sky Italia) there is a retro channel showing US tv series from the 70's and 80's... I never watched telly back then, had other things to do ... ;) Anyway, they have the Miami Vice series on now, and been watching this. It seems the first of the more 'gritty' cop programmes and seems quite well done. Into the 2nd season now ...

Miami Vice was great, but I bet it was responsible for lot of disappointed applicants to Vice when they found the Dept. didn't give them the confiscated drug money to buy their own boats, armani suits and cars :P

And the A-Team was brilliant, only show to have a helicoper hit a cliff, explode, fall to the ground in flaming shrapnel and then have the bad guys crawl out for underneath that just staggering about slightly and rubbing their heads :P

Yep, Carnival was one freaky show indeed, and very well done - acting was top drawer!
For more mainstream, I liked and still like any sci-fi type shows: the Star Treks (even the lame later ones), Sara Conner Cronicles, Dollhouse, etc. I saw parts of the 1st season of Supernatural, didn't think much of the 2 main lads... The other seaons never aired here.

What else .. I like House, and the original CSI series, although now that Grisom is gone it sucks... . Thought the 1st 2 season of Lost were good, but it got rather tired ... Glad it is finally finsihing ...

I do not feel there are enough dark/edgy shows out there. Or movies for that matter. So many romantic chick flicks, or shoot em up no real acting movies. Or.. even worse, a movie that gets its credit based on special effects "rolls eyes" nothing scares me ever, or at least it is very rare.

Well ,we have pretty much seen all they can throw at us ... now produces think some flashy FX will keep us entertained.... Carnival was great cos it didn't rely on on that stuff, well just a wee bit at the end. It was the scripting and acting that built up and left you on the edge..

I agree. and would love to see more like this.. I have  no idea why the cut the series short. I do know many religious fanatics had major issues with the show. Which here, holds a lot of power  "Sadly sighs"

Scripting and acting will win out every time for me.  Pity the fool (that's for Shedevil...feel better!) that thinks that a good movie is made good by a bunch of flash and FX.  They can certainly enhance it, if done right, but give me a good plot and a slow build to absolute terror every time.

Oooo I didn't know that ... figures, though ...
But what religious fanatic watches HBO anyway ???
There would be something 'offensive' within the 1st 5min of any HBO production ...
