I can't figure out the armor upgrade thing it's supposed to do. It DOES upgrade armor, but ONLY if it's base-non enchanted armor, and it will NOT upgrade weapons, and on the PC it won't even work at all?
I've also read that the upgrade thing itself is actually a bug. Is that true? Because that would make things a lot easier (don't use it at all).

I wish I knew what you were talking about. Upgrading armor sounds pretty useful.

It's the Party Storage Chest at Warden's Peak you gain access to after finishing the place.
Supposedly, if you leave armor in there and come back to it at a higher level, it will automatically upgrade it's material type in accordance with your level. Or something like that.

Oh. I've never heard of anything like that, and I've never seen anything like that happen in my case.
I looked it up and it appears to be a bug. Obviously this is nothing you can rely on, but here's the information if you're curious:

I saw that page too and is why I got confused. If it is a confirmed bug, I won't exploit it. But if the upgrading is intentional, I was hoping to find more information on it.

i heard something similar about the weapon smith in that area, if you sell him stuff and then buy it back it's supposed to be upgraded to your level, never tried myself though.

I assume it's a bug. But I've never gotten it to work anyway.
What I was able to get working was upgrading weapons and armor via Levi's shop. (sell, save, reload, buy back) This may also be a bug, but it doesn't feel so exploitative, because you have to pay the full price of the upgraded item to buy it back.

Theirs also a mod called "The magic box" which does the same thing.

It works on some items. A lot of the stuff from RtO upgraded from Red Steel to whatever the actually good metal is but some of it did not. The Warden Commander armor will upgrade but not some of the others.

i believe the upgrade applies to DLC content and not every item in the game?

If you check the wiki, armor and weapons listed as "variable" for their tier can be upgraded by selling to the smith at the keep, leaving, then returning and buying them back. It can take multiple loads to get them to the level you wanted. The party chest will also upgrade some items, though it is less reliable.
Edit: The upgraded items that you buy back will have a higher price.

I may do the levi's shop bug with Cailan's armor and a certain character's weapons from the same DLC.
If you get them early in the game they are red steel, but they can be up to dragonbone level. I did not realize this when I did the DLC and I was a little upset that I wasted them. Now I can amend that.
... and yeah, I am assuming that's not a spoiler. I changed whom's weapons they are, but I think Cailan's armor is advertised on the DLC.

I noticed leaving stuff made of veridium in there it changed to red steel, which I didn't like because I don't like the look of red steel.

I don't think it's a bug. He's supposed to be a master blacksmith. He improves the stuff you sell him in order to make more profit, which you can happily provide him for the upgrades.

I'm pretty sure I heard that the whole "upgrade" feature works differently depending on what platform you play on.
IIRC you have to sell the goods to the smith and buy them back on PC and use the chest to upgrade on console games I alos think I've heard that in either case it's not instantaneos - I think you must leave and come back later before the upgrade works.
It seems many things work differently on different platforms with DA:O but almost no one [posting questions here give specifics on which platform they are playing on - thus leading to many confusing (and often incorrect) answers being offered.

You do have to leave. For the Storage Chest you driop the items in, head to camp and then return to the Warden's Keep and they'll be upgraded.

the storage chest didn't work for me. I went to mikhael dryden, sold them at tier 4, left trade screen, then bought back at tier 6. Sold again, left trade screen, opened again, bought again and now they were tier 7.

The storage chest trick worked before the recent updates, now its a bit more random to get working but it does still work, what you have to do is put what you want upgraded in, then leave the area entirely then come back and it should be different i turned two dragonbone sawswords into white steel in the awakening chest by doing just that, also DO NOT leave runes in anything you want to upgrade or you will lose them
