I think Tali was specifically designed to appeal to nerds in Mass Effect 2. She's cute, she's shy, she's loyal, and she adores you. What more could you want?
I personally rather Ashley and Miranda. I like a girl that puts on a harsh front and doesn't play cute.
This is what I've been trying to say for a long while now, the notion that Tali was designed to appeal to the geeky/socially awkward type of male.
1) Does that mean that if you like Tali then you're a geek/socially awkward? But she was designed to appeal to those type of men who normally go for the geeky/shy/nerdy girls who isn't into cheerleading but rather Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, computers and all that stereotypical jazz. Liara in ME1 was the same way.
In contrast, you have characters like Ashley and Jack who initially come across as hardcore with this "leave me alone, I don't need a man" type of attitude. Of course they don't end like that once you romance then but like I said in a previous post, characters like Miranda, Jack, and Ashley all put up invisible walls that Shepard must break through before they start to pour their heart out to them. With Tali, there is no such wall/resistance as she just is just sooooo willing to spread her legs for male Shepard.
2) Then you have the idea that Tali is SUCH a Shepard ego-stroker and acts like male Shepard is some sort of mortal God whos this and whos that and can do this and can do that you're so talented this and you're so talented that. It really makes the player feel good about himself and this is attention that he doesn't get with Ashley, Miranda, and Jack. They don't kiss Shepard's feet the same way Tali does in ME2.
3) She is VERY submissive when talking to Shepard unlike Miranda, Ashley, and Jack. This is something that MOST men geeky or not likes in a women because it gives enlightment to their masculinity. This sort of goes into #2 and #1 in the sense that she puts up no resistance for Shepard and puts Shepard on a pedestal unlike the rest of the romances.
--------------------------------------------------------
Bioware always does this when doing romances. They create characters will different personalities so that we can pick one that we like. In DA2 we can go for the sexually aggressive Isabella with full features or we can go with the shy and socially inept elf in Merrill who is really naive. Same thing with ME. There is Ashley/Jack for those men who like women who puts up a fight. Then there is Miranda for men who are more about looks and sex appeal. Then there is Liara (ME1) and Tali (ME2) for men who are more into the naive "virgin type" of women who are really submissive.
Sometimes I'm not surprised to see that Tali is the most popular among the male gamers.

^ This Tali is not unique in the damsel thing she only technically needed rescuing in ME2 once during Hastrom and it wasn't even she who asked for it you got a heads up by TIM I guess. Also everyone needs rescuing multiple times if they're sent into the SM vents.

Special forces can be unprofessional, but they're the best of the best even so.Someone With Mass wrote...
The best of the best? Few on the team can qualify as professional if you ask me.
'Disciplined soldier' isn't the same as best... though, by all accounts, a good team with teamwork should be able to take down Shepard's dirty dozen.

No, that's a recipe for gettin' it on.
Besides:

This works too.

Cerberus spending an astronomical amount of resources to fund a medical miracle to revive us does not count.

No man can resist a damsel in distress.
Besides, it's not as if Tali is the only one.

not really...

First they don't say that, second Liara get's upset when you help her in LotSB, where Tali loves to get saved for you. Ash/Kai say nothing so no they don't fit it.michaelrsa wrote...

Wow, really? I never knew that, I just assumed that Bioware used the exact same lines of dialouge over and over again for every single romance.
You learn something new every day.
It fits almost every romance so well. Tali/Ash/Liara is rescued by Shepard from the geth and he allows them aboard his ship.

Better than the lame and very generic ice queen routine other characters are doing.

Harlon's razor, Kraidy.
Come on, can you really blame me for thinking all the romances have the same dialogue? It's not as if these characters aren't carbon copies of each other and have the exact same history, background and cultural development.
I'm sorry, Kraidy, I was being stupid. Forgive me.

Same. It didn't occupy a large part of the story (that would have been too much) and made Tali's character distinct from the others to a certain extent. Whether one likes that character or not is up to each player. I personally like Tali quite a bit.

Ashley, rescued on Eden Prime, Horizon
Jack, rescued from Purgatory
Liara, rescued on Therum
Tali, rescued on Citadel, Freedom's Progress, Haestrom, and from Exile
Miranda....rescues Shepard. From clinical death. For 2 years. That's badass. Only female LI on his level pre-LotSB. Ashley might step up a notch in ME3 but that remains to be seen. So yeah. I like them all (except for Tali, sorry "mancers) but Miranda is my favorite by a large margin for this and other reasons.

Its funny how whenever someone creates a topic that has already been done before, people want to b***h about how "You should use the search feature" or "Search is your friend" or some sarcastic remark like that. So when someone has an idea about a thread but does a search to see if one similar has already been done and decides to post in that one, he/she is a person who is a "necro".
Damn if you do and damn if you dont I guess.

Well different strokes for different folks. When playing as a male character in an RPG game, I tend to approachh romances the same way I would in real life. I do not mind the "ice queen" type of female who doesn't go all out about how she wants to have sex with me in our first few conversations. If I really see the girl as a potential GF, then I would like for her to have her guard up and have somewhat of a wall. This is why someone like Ashley appealed to me because she was very.....human no pun intended. She teases, but not to the point where she is just trying to play hard to get. She makes it clear that she has a sexual attraction to you, but only after a you've gotten to known each other and even then, she still continues to tease and make fun of you and so on. Point is, I like to flirt and you can do that with Ashley. With Tali in ME2, there was no flirting, it was just Shepard coming down to check on her and next thing you know she is talking about linking suits.....

This.
Frankly, I like both "kinds". I romanced Ashley in ME1 and I romanced Tali in ME2. That's the beauty of choice. Nobody needs to write up a freaking essay insinuating that all Tali-romancers are lonely nerds (which, well, most of them are, but that applies to all the romances) and that you're so superior for liking LI X over LI Y.

I play paragon on ME1 and everytime I've played male I've been caught in a romance with Ashley. I have never once found any hint that I was initiating a romance. It's painful. I just want to be a friend but everytime I do I end up ending a conversation about her saying she's a wild one and I have no idea how I got there.
