I think it's because you have less control over what happens, when, where and how much.
I know you can turn them off and on at will so they aren't totally hands-off, but something about things happening and burning mana without my direct involvement just rubs me the wrong way.
I'd much rather they have 1/10th the power and cost nothing, or not exist at all.
I *hate* sustained spells which drain mana

I actually find them to be pretty satisfying when there are enough mooks around that I can do a lawnmower impression and, using Death Syphon, keep the mana-draining sustain up indefinitely.

What about Cleansing Aura for example? The mana drain is so high and it's healing effect so small, It's only real use is going on autopilot during easy fights or clearing injuries out of combat.

Well, there are not many mana draining sustains ingame, and I didn't use any of them. Cleansing Aura is useless unless you want to remove injuries (and I prefer not to get them in the first place), Shimmering Shield is good but I played my AW as a regular caster with some extra defense and the ability to equip armor, so I've never felt the need to use that. I don't know how good the new spells from Awakening will turn out, but I generally prefer to have direct control over my mana pool.

Don't like them? Don't cast them.

you cast one and run out of mana, you gotta click every sustained spell again complete with cooldown load time.
If I am a blood mage, I say let us have a choice between sacrificing blood or mana.

This.
With enough regen, you can keep Cleansing Aura up all the time. The only downside is that your other sustains shut down if you let yourself run out of mana.

I don't and I don't. But if my opinion is shared, that's important for the developers to know. No way for me to know that without making a thread.

Cleansing aura is super effective, but NOT as a continuous heal. I usually slap it on after a battle ends to heal any injuries.

There's going to be a lot of positive and negative opinions going to be shared among many gamers. Just as much as you hate sustained spells, there's just as many that love them.
For instance, tell the tank-based AW's this and see what they say.

I love sustained spells. I just loathe the ones that drain mana.

Yeah, I forgot about Cleansing Aura. I had it set to always on in Wynne's tactics until I realized that was why her mana was draining like crazy during battle. (I do not believe this is mentioned in the spell description) Got rid of that tactic pretty quickly. Still works to heal injuries well enough, but I try not to get my dudes injured anyway. At least, not so much that the injury kits I find don't suffice.

Yeah, the spell description doesn't mention the mana drain.

Aaah ! So thats why she was always out of ****ing mana. I was boosting her Willpower constantly and could never get her to have sufficient mana. GG for not being written in the spell description...

I don't use Cleansing Aura for that reason. I always have a plethora of injury kits, so why waste a spell slot anyway? As for sustained abilities in general, I think you just have to choose the ones you want to use strategically, like any other resource. There has to be a trade-off or it's no challenge.

What i find very annoying about sustained spells is that some times it appears that they dont work as it say in the description, or there is some kind problem. For instance, the first time i used Cleansing Aura it was in a wide battlefield and it worked fine, replenishing allies very quickly. But some other times it doesnt work at all, doenst replenish, or cure injuries unless i reactivate.

iirc its a known bug, existing buffs dont work on new or resurrected people until reenabled. The fixpack fixes that. http://www.dragonage...ile.php?id=1601
