Now don't get me wrong, having a new heavy weapon would be great, but we kinda have a lot of devices of instant doom at this point. If they wish to bring out a highly unique way of making-things-terminally-dead then by all means bring it on.

However, what would be even more fun for myself (not sure about everyone else) is a melee class weapon. One of the highlights of ME2 was the Vanguard's Biotic Charge ability. Sure, in the begining it's a little stupid to just go leaping in there at lvl 1, but the later upgrades seriously make the thing VERY fun. The high-risk, high-reward factor of zooming in there up to a maercs face only to pummel 7 shades of snot out of them and still be standing afterwards made me clap my hands in mirthless glee!
At this point, if a melee weapon was available, I'd be saying "f**k yeah!!!" a lot.

Really, it doesn't have to be much. A ball-peen hammer or a pair of children's safety scissors would do it. :P
But some kind of bayonette or combat knife would be cool also.

Just sayin'

I'd absolutely LOVE a melee weapon in ME2!!! Something like Fallout 3's Powerfist would rock!

Never bring a knife into a gun fight...

I see absolutely no point of having a melee weapon even on vanguard, when you can shove a shotgun in the mercs face and pull the trigger.

The most stupid thing in Fallout 3 is when a power armored soldier tries to melee a minigun wielding baddie. It's just so god damn ridiculous.

So because ME is at least semirealistic sci-fi shooter, then PLEASE NO MELEE WEAPONS in ME. Go play Halo if you want to play unrealistic melee fighter.

Sometimes enemies get too close even for the shotgun. A soldier should always know how to fight when a gun isn't available. Which is why our modern military has the Survival Knife, the ASP extending baton (replaces the "billy club" for riot gear), and the Special Forces martial art form.

Thane certainly doesn't bring a knife to a gunfight, he' s a trained sniper who also utilizes Shredder rounds and biotics. But when enemies get too close for that, or when he needs to be a little bit more silent and stealthy, then he has those cool martial arts moves. It stands to reason that a Spectre would have the same skills.

I certainly could've used an ASP on Feros, when I ran out of Anti-Thorian gas grenades but still had colonists I wanted to subdue alive. I ended up shooting some colonists that I was trying to knock out. The seperate melee button for ME2 was a definite improvement.

That said, I think the reason why ME2 didn't have melee weapons was because of animation issues, and those issues would probably be too big to fix with DLC. So we got the separate button for melee attacks and those cutscenes where Thane channelled Steven Seagal as a compromise.

Carrying a combat knife or ASP is quite different than carrying a powerfist or an energy sword as a main weapon, which is what most of the melee weapon pleeders are asking for.

A quick stab from a combat knife and then continue shooting would be fine, playing a sci-fi samurai would not (in Mass Effect anyway).

For me the quick hit with the but of the gun/elbow is all the melee I need.

A Tanto Would be awesome.... ppl in reality I've trained in Iaido and Kendo (Only talking about weapons training.). If I get within 5meters = 15 feet No gun will stop me from killing you. (in tight quarters like in  ME2, though, in an open area I'd have no chance). you can't move that fast and track a target. especially those close quaters in mass effect 2? way too easy to get in close, fast.
Also, this is the same reason that every modern warrior STILL carries a Knife or a Tanto.
Hence in ME2 it would actually fit nicely for the Vanguard and Infiltrator. note I'm not saying a full size sword a tanto is a short Katana w/ a 1ft blade.Image IPB

I have absolutely no combat formation so I cannot really contest what you're saying but I doubt you stand a chance facing a shotgun within 5 meters, unless you're a Krogan ( :) ). But as I told you, I don't have a combat formation so I won't argue on this point :)

Concerning a melee weapon, I would say I'm absolutely ok with what is currently in ME2. A elbow kick is perfect for me, but I'm not a big samurai/manga fan. Even in Fallout 3, I've never used melee weapon. I keep melee weapon for heroic fantasy games like DAO. But that's just my opinion, don't get upset at me ;)

Yeah, fellow Kendoka here also, but at the distance of 5 m against a guy with a gun? No ****ing way. Unless you are able to surprise the guy with the gun from the back.

Using a knife instead of elbow is just matter of animation. Both would be fine for me, but a melee weapon as a main weapon? No thanks.

I have to agree with Kangasniemi. We do not need any Melee weapons in ME2, the weapons in ME2 are just fine as they are. There great weapons for the beginner and veteran levels.I have to agree if you like Melee weapons there is games you can play these weapons like Halo, Fallout 3 and so on.Each developer decide what they want in their games and what works for the levels you are on.Also by using a knife at close range you can be putting yourself at risk for more damage,as you can not move fast enough to maneuver yourself to do your next attack move.

As I said "In close combat like in ME2" notice the many obstacles we use for cover? It would be fun.? Also we still you still have guns.

This situation makes it very easy, to use a tanto. 5m is not close. if you follow Kendo you know how fast you can close 5m ( faster than a person can react, aim and shoot), However this would be a suprise attack only. W/ ME2 you have Shields and Armor, so why not simple tanto. it won't hurt the game or un-balance it. after all we have shoulder armour that gives an extra 25% to melee dmg. just make it a tanto.Image IPB

I'd like a grenade launcher that acts like a grenade launcher. My Sentinel has been in more than one situation where being able to rebound a 'nade around a corner or off a ceiling would have helped immensely.

Though, simply having throwable hand grenades would work too.

In ME1 Shepard has these disk type grenades. They came in real handy and they stuck to things. I wish they never got rid of those.

lol - my post about the Powerfist was tongue-in-cheek. Anyway, all we really need is an upgrade to our melee, or a pistol-whip. I don't mind the melee as exists at the moment, but seriously, it is just wrong to beat seven colours of crap out of a husk and he doesn't even stagger back!
EDIT: Oh, and there are already several melee animations in the game. Punching and knee to the groin being two of them. Then there's the collar-grab-against-wall action, and the foot to the throat.

I only have a 1st dan in kendo so I may not be the most authoritative figure, but in the time it would take for me to move 5m on a perfectly flat, smooth wooden floor would be more than enough time for someone with a shotgun who can see me to pull the trigger in my general direction.

The reason why I mention perfectly flat, smooth wooden floors is because, for those of you not familiar with kendo, that's the surface we practice on. We also practice with bare feet--otherwise we wouldn't have that ideal combination of traction + gliding that you need for kendo movement.

In ME2 you don't have perfectly flat, smooth wooden floors. And you're wearing combat boots. And that N7 armor is probably heavier than the protective gear we have to wear as kendo practitioners. It's going to take you a while to move those 5m.

I don't think any type of sword weapon is possible without making combat look very Hollywood-like and unrealistic. Unless you can only use it when backstabbing someone--and come on let's be honest, how often are you able to get close enough to an enemy to backstab them?

Only Infiltrators will be able to use melee weapons at this rate
