So, you clicked on this topic and you maybe be thinking, “Shepard isn’t
a fruit” or maybe “why do you guys keep making a new topic. Stop
spamming and drop it.” If these are one of the two thoughts that run
through your brain before you clicked and opened this topic, continue
reading.

FAQ:

  • Why are you guys on the 5th topic or why
is this the Nth topic of this kind on the first page? This is
    spam.

The previous threads were closed due to trolling, fighting, length and a brief memorandum issued by Mr. Stanley Woo.

    Mr. Woo posted:

The last five pages (at least) are full of bickering, personal
attacks, and politics. This topic gets a brief moratorium until people
can learn to a) debate like civil, mature individuals, and B) not feed
    the trolls.

As always, I'm available for questions and concerns, but come on,
people. You seemed to have a great community and discussion going on in
here, supporting each other, bringing up some good points. And you let
one person with an opposing view destroy the thread? Take a breather,
then let me know when y'all think you can start a new thread without
the hate against haters. Thank you.

    From: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/103/index/1100184/71

Note: He told us to, "Take a
breather, then let me know when y'all think you can start a new thread
without the hate against haters. Thank you.
    " Not cease and desist
with any threads of this kind. We received his "blessing" per se to
start this thread so please no "This is spam," or "You're beating a
    dead horse," comments.

The purpose of this thread is to get other people's opinions. We
want to know why people *don't* want the option so that we can try to
find a solution that is agreeable to their desires as well as our own.
We all want the game to be the best, so why not discuss ways to make
the game more enjoyable for everyone? Please keep political and social
    norms out of your post.

Keep in mind we're in no way affiliated to the other same-sex
topics. We may want the same things, but we're going about it a
    different way.

  • Shepard isn’t a fruit. Why are you trying to force this on me?

No, Shepard is NOT a fruit, but that doesn’t mean he/she can’t like
someone of the same-sex. All most of us want is a decent meaningful
relationship that isn’t tacked on. Some of our ideas include colored
font so that you can’t accidentally have your Shepard flirt someone you
don’t want to and choosing a crush or sexual orientation on the import
screen. We’re also open to any other suggestions.

  • Why do you guys want this so bad?

    As tyddrwsau stated so eloquently:

Games are great, in contradistinction to other media, because of
their interactive value. It is a rather different story - in that place
where imagination fills in the silent voids - if Commander Shepard is
relaxing with Kaidan after both heroes have learned to relax just a
little with one another, or if the Commander has passed through Jack's
brusque shell and confided in the real person underneath, or if the
Commander fear's Thane's illness and ignominious death to disease more
than the Reapers. In Mass Effect we play the Hero. Through
relationships with the squad, and especially the romances, we gain
access to those precious few moments where we can imagine Shepard the
    person, not Shepard "the-one-who-wields-the-gun."

For a gay player, used to being treated as a) nonexistent B) comic
relief c) standard trope tragic figure in various media, the option to
play a really cool gay hero can be a really meaningful thing. For an
open-minded player of other persuasions, it's another lens through
which to imagine a parallel tale: "so THIS is what makes Shepard who he
is, and THIS is what's important to him!"

It's about character development. Who *is* Commander Shepard, and
why do we care? The romance helps us to imagine. A same-sex romance
broadens the possibilities, and all to the good.

  • Why are people so persistent that BioWare include gay and lesbian relationships in Mass Effect?

Two of the past 3 BioWare IPs have featured gay relationships.
(Dragon Age:Origins and Jade Empire) All 3 have featured lesbian
    relationships.

BioWare has a pretty consistent history on including these types of
relationships and that is why fans are asking for it to be included in
Mass Effect as well. Most people just figured that Mass Effect would be
no different so there was no discussion of the issue until now. Nobody
is demanding that BioWare include gay and lesbian relationships in
their games. People are just asking for consistency, which thus far
    they have not provided.

Between half a dozen new romance options on top of the three
originals from the first game, it's clear that the developers spent
quite a bit of time building the romantic subplots and character
developments seamlessly into the grand ongoing saga of the series. To
have such a varied and diverse ensemble of interesting romance options
and yet not a single gay male in sight is incredibly conspicuous, and
    deserves reexamination.

  • Do you plan on turning everyone gay?

No, most of us would like the former bisexual squadmates to be
reimplemented, this includes, Tali, Thane, Jack and Kaidan. (someone
correct me on that if I'm wrong) We also wouldn't mind a BRAND NEW
character. Please share your thoughts in the poll or topic if you have
    any ideas for people.

  • I'll be uncomfortable if even gay behavior is even hinted at.

This is why this topic is here. We'd like to here from both sides
of fence. How would you like to compromise this? Some of our ideas
include:

  • Have you choose your crush on the import screen so if you
choose no one as your crush then no one of the same sex will hit on
    you.
  • Colored font that warns you if you click it you're be stepping
into a relationship dialogue. We're not hoping for a Zevran type
character we just want a normal character of the same sex who's open to
the idea of a same-sex relationship.
Have it implemented by way of DLC so if you don't DLC then
there's no way you even know Thane, Tali or whomever is open to
    same-sex relationships.

View post below for more details.

TL;DR? Well, then if this was too long
and you didn’t read and you end up posting something that has already
been discussed in these few paragraphs be sure that you will
be reported. If you'd like for us to elaborate on
certain things or would like to carry on an educated discussion this is
fine, but please no "Hell no" and that's it.

We’d like to keep a clean topic that stays away from politics and
just focuses on how we’d like this implemented. If you have any
questions feel free to ask and vote in our polls.

No, nothing said on the forums will force BioWare to do anything. It does, however, give us an idea of what some of our players would like to see in a future product. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with discussing people's wishlists for future products.

I believe that supporters are also asking for additions to the romance options available, and not replacements. As in, "in addition to the romance we've already seen in Mass Effect, we'd like to have the option of same sex romances for our Shepard." If this is the case, it's a valid request, so let's please keep this thread as civil and mature as we can. Thank you all for your participation over the last 142 pages. I'll let it keep going as long as there's something to discuss and as long as people can stay mature about it.
