If they looked more andryonous they'd probably be less appealing to look at....at least from the perspective of the average person who picks up this game.

We've long since settled that the asari were put in the game as eye candy.

That said, they are physically female and the entire basis of their culture and society is feminine and matriarchal.  If they lacked a biological sex, they'd likely have more neutral terms than "maiden matron matriarch" for the stages of their lives.

And that doesn't change the essence of the argument here - you can play as a lesbian female Shepard.  You cannot play as a gay male Shepard.  Why?

So please.  No more "asari aren't women."  I'm starting to get a callous on my forehead.

BioWare pretty much made her a shallower version of the popular Ms. Fanservice. I don't mind Ms. Fanservice when they add something to the plot, which for me Kelly fails spectacularly at. And yeah. That stripdance. Saw that part and went "...really BioWare really?" *facepalms*

Kelly? Fan service? Really?

Miranda and Samara, obviously. Jack, well... yeah. But surely - leaving aside the 'after hours' stuff - Kelly is the most regular looking woman you can speak to on the ship? (Apart from Dr Chakwas.)

Cute bisexual red head willing to do a striptease and flirt with her commanding officer? How is that not fanservice? You don't have to be stripperific to be fanservice to me.

Its the after hours stuff that relegates her to that title to me. Miranda is pretty high up there too but at least she is more interesting and actually does something to move the plot along. (Plus black outfit is sexy and fashionable without being as overt as her white one). I don't consider someone Ms.Fanservice unless that's their only interesting point. Miranda, Jack and Samara all have other interesting points. Kelly to me has none.

...hm...maybe ms. Fanservice isn't correct but she is pretty much fanservice.

Miranda's ass annoys the hell out of me though. Yvonne actually has a really cute butt why they felt the need to deform it I'll never know.

Edit: I have no problem with fanservice. It just all snowballed together and now I'm pretty much annoyed at everything. :crying: Stuff that I usually wouldn't care about gets me irritated now. :(

I see what you're saying. Her character is there purely to flirt with Shep. She performs no useful function in the plot other than...

Anyway, I hadn't thought about her like that. Good point.

I know! That. Thing. Is. Huge!

It scares me. I'm convinced it has its own gravitational pull. :P

I don't mind Kelly as a character, but the shallow way her "romance" was handled was annoying to say the least. She would have needed greater establishment as a character; I can't tell how frustrated I was when the game just skipped the dinner with her, when it would have had potential to make her a character with some depth. I really hope they'll fix this in ME3.

This.

Give me the choice between her animated grinding or being able to get to know the girl through, gosh! wow!, having an actual conversation with her I'd choose the latter. Then players might actually be sufficiently invested in her to care about saving her life... um, y'know, if such a situation were to arise.

I honestly wish that Bioware would just give you story quests that revolve around the non-combat members of your crew.  It always irked me that Pressley was basically completely unimportant in the original game, just because he wasn't part of your combat squad.

I cared more about Admiral Kahoku than I did about Pressley.

When one of the devs suggested that the Yeoman was his favorite romance option, I was really excited, because I thought it implied that your non-squad shipmates would merit a little more attention.  Which they -did-, to be fair, you get more interactions with Kelly, and there was the brandy subquest with Chakwas, etc.

Honestly, relating this to the topic?  I don't know why they can't make Kelly a serious romantic option.  Ever since the first Mass Effect blew off the old Kotor "talk to people in the field" element of Bioware RPGs, you have as many opportunities to converse with your shipmates as you have to converse with your squad. (since you have to be on your ship to talk to either)

As for her place in the plot, if you connect with her, then it adds a personal element to the crew getting kidnapped by the collectors.  I liked Kelly, so I was chomping at the bit to get through the Omega 4 relay.  My Shep literally went there for her.  (and for Chakwas and Donnelly.)  So to say she had no meaning in the plot really depends on your perspective.

To be fair, the animated grinding is really easy to do, compared to animating a dinner scene, writing the dialogue,  and doing voice recording for maleshep and femshep and Kelly.

This is kind of like saying "give me the choice between a hundred bucks and a new car, and I'd choose the latter."

Lulz.

Honestly I want to know who did all those asshot scenes. Was it one person or did a whole bunch of people do it? :D Was it intentional or accidential (not the asshots but the fact that they're so many of them).

Yes, my post was going to say that was the one function she served in the plot but I couldn't really say it without being spoilerific. Which we really need to try to avoid. ;)

This is great - we're turning into the Miranda's Ass group! :P

They probably drew straws for it - the highlight of the week would be getting to work on Miranda's ass. That is probably why there are so many - everyone wanted a go! :D

Sadly true, but this just goes to show just how unimportant the dev team considered her. Noncombatant characters can be interesting and we may want to find more about them as well, damn it!

Well, she wasn't the only character to get ass-shots, but it's no wonder she's most noticeable. That asari mercenary on Illium was spot on about her comments on Miranda's outfit of choice.

Whoa, so forceful ^^

Yes, they make games for customers, but there is such a thing as artistic license. It is in their right to write the story and characters as they see fit. Of course, market issues will play a big factor in their decisions, but the thing is that ultimately, the decision to implement a feature or not is their absolute right. Besides, you can't cater to every single wish of every single customer.

We, as customers, can however come up with reasonable arguments on why a feature like same-sex relationships available in the game would be a good inclusion, and hope for the best.

Damn that sounds harsh. If you don't like the product, don't buy it then. If I understand it correctly, there are games out there that do have homosexual content and romances. And if gay love is so damn important, I would really recommend the sims, in which you can choose people's sexuality freely.

Hey there!

Just heard the abandoned voice clips where Tali expresses an interest in femshep, and vice versa.
Honestly.
The pulled that trick again?
If it was just corporate ignorance I could take it, but when Bioware actually went to the trouble of recording all the lines...
- I can't make heads or tails of it.

But wouldn't it be nice to have a romantic dinner between Shepard and the romantic interest, extra animations and chit-chat and all?

Shortcut version could be taking said romantic partner out for drinks. Those animations are already in! Paragon date: buy partner his favourite drink, chat and then dance.  Renegade date: get plastered, make the date hold Shep's hair during the purging phase (not that mShepard has enough hair to hold back).

Oh! Oh! Let's not forget the: "I'm shaking my awesome ass (in a dreadful manner) next to you, feel free to think I'm dancing with you, babe!"
Man, that Asari should have slapped me to the end of the galaxy!
