If it was just corporate ignorance I could take it, but when Bioware actually went to the trouble of recording all the lines...
- I can't make heads or tails of it.

My best guess is that somewhere in the ME team specifically (not EA, not BioWare in general) is a suit who, after the writers wrote the content and the VAs were recording it, came in and said, "Take this out."

Alternately, BW may have a marketing suit that is irrationally fearful of how same-sex romances would be seen by the shooter-playing demographic, as opposed to the RPG-playing demographic, specifically.

Does anyone know how Mass Effect 1 and 2 were marketed then? I've never seen a tv commercial for either, and I only saw a couple of print ads on the train for ME2 in the weeks before its release. That said, especially for Mass Effect 1, I can't imagine them worrying about the shooter crowd's reception of it, since the guaranteed customers were Bioware fans, and (in ME2) fans of the first. And again, what little I DO know of the game's advertising has the developers touting the level of customization available, regardless of Sheploo there.

Also - wasn't there some overlap with the DA team and the ME team? I thought there was, but I could be wrong.

The only ads I've seen for Mass Effect 2 outside of gaming circles (you, away from the people who were already going to buy it) were the "Fight For The Lost" ads (catchy title).

FemShep/Tali being taken out is just horrible. Why would you do this to us Bioware? Why? 

Saying Shepard is straight simply doesnt cut it. My FemShep was with Liara every single time I played a game with her in ME1. So maybe YOUR Shepard is straight, but mine isnt, and last I heard, this was a role playing game.

Why would I want to role play as a straight person? I am already straight person, Bioware.

Possibly.   Hudson's claim about the FemShep/Liara romance was stupid indeed, but it's just speculations at this point.

That's pretty pointless speculation. I don't think that he alone decided what to say in that interview, nor do I think that his intentions or opinions can be read from his official statements. It smelled like covering for some other issue in its sheer absurdity. There is a clear wall of silence concerning this issue at Bioware, seeing both Mr. Hudson's and Dr. Muzuka's empty statements about it.

I'm curious of what it might be, but without someone inside the company spilling the beans, it's impossible to guess.

My guess is still that they actually wanted to do this but ran out of time and money to get the stuff right. So they cut it and because it's never good to tell the audience that something was cut they give us the "the artists wanted it that way" stuff.

That would explain the fragments and the silly explanations. Because if they never wanted to do that they wouldn't have recorded it.

But he's no newcomer at the job, and Liara was there from the beginning. Personally, I don't see that kind of attitudes prevailing at Bioware after all this time, and games like Jade Empire and Dragon Age. I'm leaning more towards an explanation that is either embarrasing or just plain stupid, such as Ryzaki's suggestion of running out of money or time. No company likes to admit something like that when they can say they planned it from the start.

But that too is just speculation. I'm on the wrong continent to start snooping rumours from a Canadian gaming company.

I'm actually more likely to believe that they ran out of time for the second game. In the first game they may well have backed up after realizing that making every single LI bisexual might have been a bit too much even for Bioware, or after needlessly getting scared by that silly scandal.

Personally I'd say it's the other way around, if anything.  For the first game they were still trying to find their groove, and I could buy that they ended up short on time and just decided to spend their resources on something other than gay romance. (Even though all the dialogue had been recorded already and would be a simple matter of scripting it in?  Yeah, I suppose it's possible.)

But for the second game?  The focus on romance was so much larger right from the get-go, and from what we know the development process went quite smoothly without any hitches or delays at all.  They had more than enough time and resources to implement a gay romance if they wanted to.  The only conceivable reason why it wouldn't be in the game is if they intentionally decided to forgo it for some reason.
