They are a company that wishes to make money, and their products should be optimized to maximize profitability, rather than tailored to a minority of consumers who likely will purchase the game for its other merits anyway. It is far more likely that a person will NOT purchase the game because male/male relationships are possible, I speculate that few would not purchase the game because those pairings aren't an option. Homophobia is much stronger than homophilia, in situations like these.

Good point. I suspected as much myself. Obviously they aren't still "feeling the waters" as there's only one game left in the series. It's a shame that a company has to play to the reservations of some of its fans (albeit the majority) instead of opening its games to interpretation for all, but I suppose it's hard to fault them for making the safe move.

I agree. While in a perfect world one of my male Shepard's would have the option to romance another male, the omission of this option doesn't ruin the game for me. I remain optimistic that a future DLC would address this, a paid DLC is the perfect method of delivering this content, especially if it comes with a warning. This would allow the consumers that want the content to have it, and allow the anti-gay consumers to opt out. Win-win.

Paid DLC just for the s/s romance ? No that would generate  negative feedback from both sides.
Free and optional DLC through the Cerberus Network would be a better solution.

I wouldn't say win-win, considering those who want the romance options they feel they deserve would have to pay extra for it while everyone else has the luxury of having it for free. I'm honestly not very interested in a male/male pairing myself (though I'd probably still do one just for the hell of it), but I still believe in equality. If Bioware ever does implement it in some fashion, they should just implement it. A " for all you...special people out there" DLC just seems weird to me.

Perhaps a free DLC is better. In any case, it is not a perfect solution. The only perfect solution would be for humanity as a whole to get past such things as homophobia and other forms of intolerance, but that is beyond the scope of a video game.

I really can't see that happening. If they're going to do the work to implement s/s romance material and then face the potential media fuss, then I think they will want a financial sweetner. If this does happen then no way will it be free imo.

Bioware already considers to do a romance DLC. the work needed to unlock two romances for s/s in the vanilla game can be done with little extra cost while they do the work needed for the expanded romances for the DLC. And a free DLC alongside the paid one would work as advertisment and generate media attention.

:o :D  that's awesome!

Anyway, why not just have a male-male option in the next one? The character would just be open to it, and if Shepard keeps hinting, well why not?

Surely s/s is more likely to be included as an element within a prospective romance pack DLC than released separately?

It's definitely a possibility, but I really think it would be harder to implement well.  Most people will want to see how the relationships they forged in the first two games play out, and adding a new group of romances, be they m/f or s/s, could easily feel tacked on.  Don't get me wrong, it could be done, but it would need to be done carefully.  I think that the best possible solution is patching it into ME2.

Edit:  Unless I read your post too fast, which is possible, and you're referring to a character that already exists in the story?

My turn to be cynical.
If there ever IS a romance DLC, it'll likely just be an arbitrary expansion of the ones already available.

- "Get Tali a bouquet of rare Eletanian roses".

You'll see.

This is one of the reasons I favour Kaidan. You get carry-over from ME1 which helps with continuity, and there's less of a sense of being cheated out of intimacy with the character since the ME1 LIs didn't just cut you off if you couldn't romance them. All LIs from ME1 were 'meh' or 'you bastard' in ME2 anyway, so no missed opportunities there - just the hug.
And "losing a limb" bespeaks obsessive interest to me.

I reject your cynicism and substitute the positive view that they'll charge for this to cover flipping a couple of ones and zeros for Tali and Thane and inviting the voice actors back for an afternoon.

I know a lot of people want a new character, and I know a lot of the people yammering about  "character assassination!" will probably rage, but this would be a wonderful solution.

Yes. Unfortunately, I can see that myself. <_<

Better to be pessimistic on this and be pleasantly surprised if we get anything, I think.

Oh... and keep posting to let BW know what we want!

I share this cynical opinion.  The potential romance DLC will add more crap to the straight romances and will not add any s/s content.  I will definitely not be purchasing it if this is the case and this is coming from someone who bought the dang appearance pack DLC!

They weren't as bad as people made them out to be, but...would have looked so much better if they were actually sunglasses and not a visor. The outfit made her look like a badass, though.

It's possible, but we'll see - for now the whole romance DLC is quite speculative. The chances increase with campaigning that shows that there would be interested; the more money there is to make, the greater the likelihood for positive response is.

I still don't understand why people who animated the characters such beautiful eyes go their way to hide them at every possible opportunity. I'll wait for someone to mod the silly glasses off, at the very least.

I only bought it for Jack's outfit actually.  The shades have grown on me a bit.  If you romance her, you just have to make sure you switch to one of the 'non-shade wearing' outfits before the love scene...the shades kind of ruin the moment.

There are ways that this could work out really really well - not only for Kaidan but for any characters that might possibly be opened for romance like Joker or Dr. Chakwas (hell yeah!).

One way that occurred to me would be to have the the relationships with original Normandy crew be pushed to the side until the job is done, so it doesn't interfere with all the galaxy saving.  The "big fight with the big bads" could happen fairly early in the narrative of the third game, rather than as the climax.  Shepard prevails against all odds, but the galaxy is in ruins.  The chunk of the game  could focus on the rebuilding, and now that the main task of the trilogy is done, John/Jane Shepard could pick up with Kaidan/Joker/Ashley/whomever.

This would lend itself well to constant support by DLC releases too, since the story is finished but there's still plenty of stuff in the galaxy.  I kinda doubt that they would ever approach it like that (it's probably well over half done already), but damn it would be cool.
