I don't think EA or MS cares what is in the game as long as BW makes a certain profit margin.
Indeed. In fact, a forum member posted that they spoke personally with an ME2 employee who said it was decided to cut s/s material by someone high up the ME2 chain of command, and that a lot of ME2 staff fought to keep it in, but lost (it's a few pages back in this thread - names no names, as is only right and fair).
You talk about Fable though, and I don't think the two are comparable. Fable is so cartoony in its violence and sex that its s/s options will never hold the same weight anything in a Bioware title.

Ah true. But Fable is fun.
I just wanted to have a evil romance with Reaver.
But I don't know the fact that DA has it and no one overly cares (and those that do get over it) makes this seem odd. I could understand if they went ahead and said: "we don't see any of Commander Shepard's male crewmates as gay/bi." but they don't even do that much.
Instead they go: "Shepard despite having no set personality, race, gender or even set of accomplishments (beyond the barebones) is somehow predefined."
"Oh and only MShep because FemShep is free to have an actual relationship with female Asari. But only female Asari because they're discount lesbians. But female human is only a weird striptease" because FemShep is predefined in the same way as MShep yet they don't have the same options. And their relationships with the NPCs are totally different despite being nearly exactly the same."

Despite however bleak the prospect for getting any s/s content in the ME franchise might be, I for one won't be shutting up about it. The way the fans have been treated over this is insulting: comments like those in the Kotaku article are insulting to our intelligence; insulting to our knowledge of the game as hardcore fans; and insulting to us as consumers who, it is assumed, Bioware would quite like to buy the next game and any DLC. Fail all round.

The bleaker the prospects, the more reason there is to complain. Back when ME1 came out there was some wondering over the lack of male homosexuality, but someone at Bioware said they just didn't have the confidence and that they would do something about it in the sequel. That appeased people, and they shut up for the entire production - as a result Bioware apparently decided that there is no demand and played it safe with the intention to mainstream the franchise - never mind that they've sold remarkably well with their non-mainstream games.
Now it's good to demonstrate that there is demand for non-mainstream content, and the sales of Dragon Age hopefully demonstrate that there is no loss gained from implementing it. With those factors together, Bioware will hopefully see the light before the next installment.

All we can do is hope. Keep our voices heard, keep being reasonable, keep educating, and keep hoping.
I have just shy of 400 followers on Twitter. Every damn one of them knows my feelings on this because I talk about it regularly on there. I talk about it on a busy UK messageboard I'm a member of. I've been planning to write about it as a guest piece on my other half's very popular UK socio-political blog, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Perhaps this week will be the week I finally do. My friend has lots of contacts on the gaymer circuit - she'll no doubt get it out there as well. I won't keep my dissatisfaction at a low simmer on this thread - contained away from where it can be heard. I hope others have channels they can talk about this stuff in too.

This would be nice. I'm still not giving up hoping for MShep & Kaidan - longshot or not - but the opportunity to have Shepard identify unambiguously as gay or straight would be positive, even if there's no accompanying LI (which would be weak, IMO, but better than complete invisibility).Ryzaki wrote...
BW even if there's no MM options just give MShep the option even if at the very end of the game to say he's going back home to his male lover. Just so I can smile. Please?
That's the pragmatist in me, though, hoping for something over nothing in the face of mounting evidence that Bioware has hopped off the inclusivity train in favour of courting mainstream shooter fans who couldn't care less if there's character development so long as they get to blow something up with a missile launcher. The story in ME2 suffered for it, as did character interaction. But then, I've yet to see the product that was improved by catering to increasingly lower common denominators, eliminating choices because they're too 'controversial' or 'niche.' And if that's the direction they wanted for ME, then I won't be buying the third installment.
This shouldn't even be an issue.
BioWare, you have done and can do better than this. There are plenty of established shooter developers out there who will do combat better than you and bring the experience shooter fans want to the table every single time. What set you apart was your attention to story and to character development, for both protagonist and NPC. You offered choices that few other games did, in terms of morality, personality, charater development, and party interaction - including the new heights of inter-party interaction seen in DA:O. To see you stepping deliberately away from that in any of your titles - from offering options for interesting and 'meaningful' character interaction that included same-sex relationships - is nothing short of deeply disappointing. I expected better.

I agree with every single last thing you wrote.
In Christina Norman's slideshow in another thread ("Where's my inventory?") she hints at acknowledging the rpg elements of the game need to be worked on to bring them up to speed for ME3. I sincerely hope that as part of that process that shadowy figure high up the ME chain of command who vetoed s/s content realises inclusivity is the way forward in offering options and choice, not exclusion.

Ditto.
Personally, I hope that the mainstreaming of ME2 will result in counterreaction in ME3's development. They already have what they wanted from the new approach - greater playerbase. It should hopefully allow them to concentrate on the art instead of attracting new customers in the final part, since it ought to be popular regardless of the content, as long as Bioware manages to avoid making a simply bad game - something they've managed to do since the Neverwinter Nights.

JK...or Am I? :innocent:
But yeah...fourthed on the agreement.
So...BW devs who are stood up for the s/s options and happen to be reading thanks for standing up for the S/S options even if you guys did get smacked down!
And please try to sneak in the line. Please? :innocent:

Not as much as the main game, but it wasn't bad. But I don't consider it a sign towards cutting out the romance subplots in future Bioware publications. It just has a disposable cast that will not return in the sequels. The epilogue mentions your romance from the game if you had any, heavily implying that it can continue in DA2.
I haven't lost the hope for Bioware completely - somebody high up has just gotten overzealous about mainstreaming their leading product. I don't think that they expected such strong reactions to the point of major gaming sites questioning their judgement about the matter. It should make them realize that Bioware has always been famous for its wide variety of options in gameplay, and that whereas mainstream gamers come and go, nothing can replace a loyal fanbase who appreciate what they are actually good at.

You're on fire tonight (or this afternoon, depending on your location!)
I've been away from this thread for a while - sometimes too much anger isn't good for little Catherine. However, that Kotaku article, along with the tireless dedication of others on this thread, spurs me forward to try with all my might to get this message across. I don't have masses of oomph in gaming circles, but I'm loud and annoying, which has to count for something

I think any historian will tell you that every human being who've made some kind of drastic societal impact was loud and annoying.
So I say keep it up!
