I remember a while back Microsoft instituted a ban on XBL usernames that indicated the user's homosexuality. Users with names like that were often attacked via headset and on forums, and they wanted to put a stop to all the drama. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision not to include m/m homosexuality in Mass Effect had something to do with it. They are primarily intended as 360 games, and there's a homophobia problem in that fanbase.

I would say that there exists a substantial prejudice towards homosexuals in society overall, not just the fanbase of 360 games.

Considering I´m 18 and people younger than that are legally not allowed to play Mass Effect 2 I would disagree.

Perhaps I should have said "younger people in general"

What is your point?  Are you saying that you are open minded.  If so, than that is fine.  I did not accuse anyone specifically of not being open minded.
I also did not specify an age group either.
Your also assuming that since some people can not legally play ME2 means that they are not playing ME2, which BTW has absolutely nothing to do with the essence of what I said in my larger post.

True, but I was really more talking about simple economic motivations here, and if you're writing a game for a fanbase that has a history with open homophobia, you'll probably think twice about including homosexual characters. I'm not saying this is somehow intrinsic to 360 owners or limited to them, I play the game on the 360 too, after all. It is interesting, though, that for some reason or other there hasn't been the same kind of scandal on the PSN. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions here, I really do just mean that it's interesting and that the two consoles don't cater entirely to the same demographic.

By the way, "it's just the way I was raised" is nothing more to me than just another excuse for fear and stupidity. People often excuse racism the same way, and I just won't have it. At some point you're old enough to make your own decisions, and I'm sorry, that homophobia and racism are completely irrational, baseless and stupid is not something I'm willing to debate, it's about as close as I'd consider anything to fact, and anyone who can't see that is an idiot. No matter what daddy told him about the queers and the negroes.

But I agree with you that it's more common in young people for a number of reasons.

My point is that I find it offensive to say that most young people are homophobes. Also it is not true, generally older people are less open-minded, at least from what little experience I have.

Agreed I'd say homophobia is more on the immature and older generation. Most of the people I know that are 18+ and a smidge of maturity aren't homophobic its either an older person or a 15 year old idiot that will hopefully grow out of it.

It simply exists and the fact that it exists within an individual does not
mean that individual is a hateful person.  Stupidity does not equal
ignorance or lack of open mindedness.  Young people grow older and learn and become more open minded IMO.

Re-read my earlier post then.  My earlier statement spoke more about young people in general, not older adults.

Again stupidity does not equal ignorance and lack of open mindedness in young people.

If
you don't want to debate something, then don't debate it.

This is similar to what I said in my earlier post.  There are a huge amount of young people on these boards.  Your misreading me a little I think.

Hey, I'm sorry if it seemed like I was attacking you, I can see we're mostly agreeing on this. I work with teenagers, so I know exactly what you're talking about. And I also think (and I suspect you'd agree here) that it's unfair if older people expect a 16-year old to act like an adult. Some can, and it's nice when they finally get there, but they have to get there on their own, belittling them for their views usually doesn't work.

But I do have no patience for people who never get there, and many don't.

No, that is not what I am saying.  Re-read the entire post and put it into proper context. Not just the last sentence.

JohnnyDollar wrote...
I think some people in this thread do not bother to take into account a
person's upbringing as to that person's thoughts about homosexuality.
There are also other factors as well, including but not limited to the
community and surroundings that this invidual grew up with.

In
other words, just because a person is against s/s romance in the game or
homosexuality in general, does not make him/her a hateful person.  It
could also be ignorance, what values that his/her parents taught, peer
pressure, age, etc... These values and experiences are learned and still
with that person into adulthood.

Younger people also display
less openess that will often times change as they grow older and become
more mature and see things from a different perspecive.

ME2 was so focused on the individual characters, that some social issues got left behind. I would like ME3 to be bolder in this respect.

The Genophage discussion with Mordin is a good example. So are Ashley's xenophobic ramblings in ME1. I didn't agree with her, but I'm glad they put dialogue like that in there. Let's see more of this in ME3

I don't remember Ashley being a xenophobe, but I probably have her on a uber high pedestal. I do however remember her being wary of them. I do remember that pilot man being a xenophobe and I wanted to throw him out the airlock, but I am glad those options were there. I'm also glad this topic is still alive and kicking.

I think I read that they didn't actually intend for Ashley's anti-alien attitude in ME1 to be as extreme as it came across, certainly it seemed to get dialed back somewhat in ME2. We'll have to wait and see in ME3 what her attitude is then, maybe we the player will get to help determine whether she remains distrustful of aliens or not. As someone who has played, and enjoyed a great deal, the Ashley-FemShep romance in both ME1 and ME2 via an ME1 mod, I definitely look forward to seeing how that all plays out!

Let's be honest, the minute you start comparing someone you can have an actual conversation with to a dog, you're just asking for trouble.

I don't know...Bill O'Reilly always reminded me of a really grumpy basset.

most 10-16 year old males will have a negative or neutral view on homosexuality. mostly: `YO NO HOMMO BRO, LOL YOU GAY BRO``. Only to make themselves look more masculine in front of their peers. As they mature, they will be less concenred of popularity and social image, and learn to accept homosexuality.

well typically, rednecks, hardcore religous folk, and hardcore 3rd world parents (mine do) will disapprove of homosexuality. It is up the the children themselves to make their own opinions.

As russell peters said: `Dad! we got a population crisis going on over there. We could use a couple of homos in India right now, you know what Im sayin?"
