No, I wouldn't be angry. I can tell you why. First of all, you like to compare this problem with racism, yes? Not a bad example. Let me ask you how long it took until racism was not an issue anymore in, let's say, the USA? It's still not over. There is still too much racism. But that doesn't mean it didn't get better. One step after another we come closer to "I have a dream." It's the same with homosexuality. We can't demand a final solution with no compromises all of a sudden. I believed that we were past such prejudices, but alas we are not. This is not the time for a gay pride parade. This is a chance to show our good will. If BioWare deems the "toggle" to be necessary than that will be a lot better than the alternative: NOTHING. That would make me angry. The fact that we got a chance but we couldn't see past our pride and ****ed up.
Uhm. You wouldn't be angry? U'd be fine with passive racism. Okay. To each their own.
And this kinda has nothing to do with the topic at hand so I'll try and keep it short. I never demanded anything. I only said I'm not for the toggle thing and I explained why. I said I was for the colored text...and again I stated why. Yes racism is still a problem in America today but it certainly didn't hide under the covers because blacks decided to accept white america's passive racism. They fought against it. MLK didn't say I have a dream one day all the little blalk girls duck and cover when Mrs. Daisy walks by so that white america doesn't have to see them.
No, I don't want to nitpick the game to oblivion. I would be quite content with the coloured text alone. But sometimes compromises have to be made. One can always continue the FIGHT FOR LOVE in future games from BioWare and make it more equal the next time. Do I want equality now? YES! Can I have it? Maybe.
That comment wasn't meant for you. It was a general statement. A toggle due to same-sex has never been done nor has it ever been done for color. There's a reason why...and it's because it's offensive.
I don't have a problem with people who prefer black people over white people aslong as it doesn't interfere your work and dignity. If someone says I prefer black women and I don't have a single white friend. No problem. Your choice, your preference. If someone says I can't accept my white co-worker because of his skin colour and in my spare time I humilate white people whenever I can. That is a problem. And that I cannot accept.
If someone says to me I don't hang out with gay people because they're ewwy or any other stupid reason...I'd still say...you need to reevaluate your feelings lol. This toggle thing isn't about PREFERENCE it's about completely removing gay content from the game because someone is "uncomfortable" with the gays. And if someone again told me I prefer blacks to whites or visa versa and get offended when someone of the opposite race hits on me...again I'd say you need to revaluate your feelings...and probably add I'm surprised you get hit on at all. lol.
Preference is fine...but to become offended if you even see it or experience is the problem. This is my point.

Yes, but I believe these people were no software developers. And they still achieved an acceptable outcome. BioWare could fine tune it, if you ask me.Wittand25 wrote...
The toggle would be unnecessary extra work. No other computer game that contains s/s romances has such a feature. They all have the gay romances implented just like the straight romances, which shows that it is not needed.Syledir wrote...
It wouldn't be an increase of work. Look at youtube. There are enough people who uploaded vids with for example Male Shepard and Kaidan romance content. Look at the first page of this thread. Every NPC of the first and second game could have a same sex romance. I doubt that it took them very long to change the game settings like that. So BioWare could do it, too.
Now people get offended if the standard setting is straight? Get people offended because the standard seeting is white skin colour instead of black skin colour too? If that is such a huge issue let BioWare switch the standard setting to bisexual. But, honestly, we want same sex romance in Mass Effect. And if the standard setting or the default setting is heterosexuall, we can certainly live with that. Can't we?
And I have seen the romance scenes on youtube the only one working right now is Jacob, Thane is to small and Shepard licks his nose, and Garrus is to tall and causes clipping issues.

I agree withe Siasonea, the term "toggle" seems to rub everyone the wrong way. I said I wouldn't use it anymore. On comment later it is back again. Scary.
I thought about something like a "sexual preference check" on the character creator screen. I imagined, that if every romanceable NPC would be bisexuall the would react according to your sexual preference. Example: Male Shepard, homosexuall => only Jacob, Thane and Garrus are available. Male Shepard, heterosexuall => only Miranda, Jack and Tali are available. Male Shepard, bisexuall => every NPC is available. The same procedure, if your Shepard is female. I thought it would be a great compromise because everyone: Men, women, heteros, homos and bis would have to pick their sexual preference.
I am aware that in reality it doesn't work that way. But this is a game not reality. Do you like Star Trek? I was reminded of a DS9 episode where the hole crew had to solve a case in Las Vegas during the 60's in the holodeck (The holodeck is an almost perfect real life simulator). Captain Sisko didn't want to participate because during that era black people were not permitted in such an establishment. His girlfriend argued with him that the holodeck is not real life but a version of what could have been. A place where your dreams could become reality. He gave it a try and in the end he even sang in front of an audience (But I have to say: The singing was horrible). A Phantasie were black and white people in Las Vegas during the 60's were sitting together and not having a problem with that.
The same goes the other way around, too. Bad example: Gay p0rn. Not much of a story there, I give you that. And I haven't seen so many of them, but my point is. There were no women, I mean none, extinct. And heterosexuall men, must have moved to another planet. And there is no problem with that, because it is not reality. It's just a phantasie; imagination.
If I want reality, I don't need video games. Reality I have every day. But video games like the ones from BioWare give us the possibility to create experiences unlike real life. And I wouldn't want to take that from anyone. Everyone should be able enjoy the game as much as possible.
As for need to reevaluate ones feelings. Well, you can't make them, just because you want to. No matter how stupid, prejudiced or childish it might seem to you. You wouldn't reevaluate your feelings only because someone tells you to. If someone feels disgusted of gays. Argumentation won't help because it is not a problem of logic. A good friend of mine is so gay he is pissing rainbows. His problem is women give him the urge to vomit. At least thats what he tells me. He can't help it. But he tries to be as friendly and respectfull as possible. On the Kinsey scale he is a 6, end of story. He can't change it and become less gay then he is right now. And given the opportunity, I am pretty sure, he would make his Shepard gay so that only men could respond to him in a romantic way. I wouldn't have a problem with that. It would be his version of game. And I am not going to tell him to reevaluate his feelings. So what are we going to do with the guy who is disgusted with gays but wants to play Mass Effect as much you. Sooner or later we have to accept that everyone else won't simply disappear. For good or for worse we have to live with each other.
The coloured text IS a good solution. I just want to be able to have a Plan B, if the coloured text turns out to be unacceptable to BioWare (for reasons we don't know). The "toggle" is obviously not a good idea. Do you agree with my "sexual preference check" or is that equally bad.

Not all of us have the luxury of turning our backs on everyone who lacks a sufficiently enlightened viewpoint. I'm originally from Texas, if I divorced myself from everyone in my family who had racist, homophobic or other non-PC tendencies then my family reunions would consist solely of myself and my autistic niece. Not everyone comes wrapped in a shiny pretty liberal package. Rather than dismiss these people as backward idiots, it might be helpful to get to know them first, and calmly nudge them toward a more inclusive world view.

You know that whole shiny pretty liberal package could be taken quite easily the wrong way. <_< My family is pretty damn conservative and I have no problems calling them out on their s***. Calmly nudge my...well behind. Some people need to have things slammed over and over into their skulls until they get it.
I'm not going to smile and nod when people tell me that I'm lesser than them. I'm going to tell them to go to hell.
Edit: That said everyone has different ways of doing things but please don't pretend yours is better than anyone elses.
Then again everything has its place. Wouldn't do to get in a screaming match about s/s romances. :innocent:

And yes we do have to live with each other...so we should try to understand each other...

...and attempt to not throw up at the sight of the opposite sex.
I don't mind the thing I suggested on the first post...which I believe is similar to what you're suggesting...yes? It's in the 3rd post 3rd suggestion.
Lol. I'm not running around beheading those who don't agree. I'm asking them to reevaluate their feelings. I don't know where you got off thinking that I dismiss these people as backward idiots. I called his friend an idiot...which yes I think he is. That doesn't mean that I dismiss them all as "backward idiots." I for one have a very redneck tunnel view friend who at one point viewed blacks and lesbians as disgusting. Then we met and got to know each other and I told her that she's dumb for thinking all blacks and lesbians are the same...and now we're best friends.
If someone is being an idiot...I will call them out on it. I'm sorry that you have a racist family that's not very PC...but I was raised in a pretty racist family myself. And yes I call them idiots for doing it. I'm their favorite. xD
What has this world come to where we have to politely call people idiots...when they "politely" call you a ****?
O_o
It's called taking the high road. Luckily, it's completely optional.
I see what you did thar. You took the high road. <_<
And no I don't believe that's called taking the high road. I believe it's called I don't want to start-anything-so-I'll-just-sit-here-and-take-it. At least to ME that's what it seems like.
You don't HAVE to go to your reunions. You choose to...for whatever reason..or maybe you're forced. But just because they're your family doesn't mean they're right.
Indeed, it is a choice. I choose not to condemn people because they are self-limiting, I choose not to self-righteously rebuke everyone who disagrees with me. I choose compassion over 'being right'. I choose a longer, harder road of helping my family actually SEE the flaw in their attitudes rather than just dumping them by the curb like an old sofa. I choose to care about people who aren't perfect, and who may never be.
But you can go toe-to-toe with all the ignorant people out there if you want. See how many hearts and minds your approach reaches. I just don't have the energy for that anymore.

We're going off-topic. I chose to PM you. You chose to ignore it and post it here. It seems you actually do care about being right and letting the "world" see it.
