Of course it changes the entire character. I can think of few things more character defining than one's sexual preference.

Of course someone's sexuality is an important part of a person, otherwise this entire topic wouldn't exist at all.  The question is whether it demonstrably changes the story either narratively or tonally, as you have suggested, and people are pointing out that it wouldn't.

Once again I feel compelled to point out that, remember, these characters that we're talking about were originally bisexual, and that their characterizations and dialogues and involvement in the story were written around that basis.  How would their potential bisexuality significantly deviate the story of ME2, considering that the story was originally written with it in mind?

Well apparently, if you are a supporter of this thread, you are either a homosexual person who feels entitled, or a female who gets their jollies by seeing gay men "going at it."  :?

One can find it sexy and also want more options in the game too!

Sorry! I'm a heterosexual female who supports the option but is not turned on by it in any way but, according to the above "fact," I don't exist either. :crying:

Oh snap! We don't exist! Oh noes! :(

I like the option because it gives me more ways to play. :D

For the record, Ryzaki is one of the ones I'm talking about when I talk about the girls that want it just to get their rocks off. She doesn't really care about the homosexuals in this issue. At least not nearly as much as she cares about satisfying her own itch.

This is according to her own reasoning for coming in defense of "man on man action" in past threads. She's exactly the wrong type of person that needs to be fighting this issue.

And here I think we have the core of why some people have a problem with it. This notion that sexuality defines a person or their behavior. It's similar to the idea that sexuality somehow limits what a person is capable of and determines how they would react in a situation. The idea that "Shepard can't be gay because he's a hero". No it's not the exact same thing, but it is very close.

It's also the idea that sexuality is set in stone. Many people, particular sexual psychologists, see sexuality as something that is fluid and only very rarely is anyone 100% straight or gay.

Obviously I disagree with both of these notions. I don't see sexuality as my own defining characteristic nor anyone elses. Sexuality simply determines who you are more likely to be romantically interested in. It doesn't mean you like every member of that sex, it doesn't mean you act in a certain way, and it doesn't control the way you think in any non-romantic situation. It simply doesn't apply.

Ditto! That and because I feel for the gay Shepard's of the world who have remained celibate throughout their harrowing journey. They deserve someone in their lives during this troubled time just as much as the straight Shepards.

Why? This isn't a debate about any great moral issue. She's a consumer like everybody else. She has a say in what she wants to pay for. One's motivation for wanting the option is completely irrelevant. Even if you'd want the M/M option solely because you find it hilarious, you'd still have a say in this thread.

A person's reason for wanting this content doesn't matter; my biggest reason is because I think it will make the game more fun.

You should really stop making assumptions about people based on little to nothing. It makes people uncomfortable and hostile and adds nothing to the conversation. Keep your personal opinion about other posters to yourself or in PMs, but please do not discuss it here.

A characters sexual preference doesn't have to change their character at all. We wont see Garrus acting like Zevran or exhibit any other stereotyped gay behaviours. He'll still be the same Garrus, so it wont affect the story in the slightest.

A lot of your opinions seem to be based on your distain of gay behaviours or homosexuality in general. You seem to be in the minority on these boards when you see homosexuality as a trait to be laughed at.

I came into this thread knowing, that in here, my opinions would be in the minority.

That's fine, we're obviously interested enough in your opinion to bother replying. What I dont understand it how you can keep claiming it would make a mockery of characters based on nothing more than your personal opinions.

Me saying "there shouldn't be any alien romance at all because it makes a mockery of the game" carries no less weight than what you're saying. Am I in a position to seriously refute any points based on my opinion alone (without any facts to back it up)? Of course not.

Quick scenario for you:
You're doing your round trip of the ship to progress the story with each character. While talking to Garrus, you notice a flirty option on the dialogue wheel alongside the standard options... What would you do?

Your saying "alien romances makes a mockery of the game" would carry less weight, because the game already contains alien romances. they didn't have to go back and change anything to appease a small subset of people.

As for your last question. the first thing i'd do is make a mental note of my last save and make sure not to erase it, then upon choosing it and witnessing what would undeniably be the most ridiculous, awkward, and unintentionally comical exchange in Mass Effect 2, I would proceed to tell my Mass Effect-playing friends about it. Chances are they would've already seen it and told me about it or heard about it on some forum though.

I have to partly agree with danman in this regard. The opinions of those who are actually homosexual or bisexual carry much more weight. Which is not to say that they shouldn't be allowed to express their opinions.

My reasons are just as valid as your "OMG It'd make Shep comical if it was included 111!!!" for keeping it out.

It's a pretty hilarious reason, come to think of it. You can make your Shepard ridiculously ugly, make him wear hot pink, act like a caustic jerkass and yank the chains of everybody with completely mismatched dialogue options. Shepard's dignity is just about as shattered, homosexuality or no homosexuality - as if it'd have to be somehow comical at all.

What if it was you that had to initiate the romance?
What if Kaiden didn't even so much as hint at it without a green-light from Shepard?
What if it was colour coded on the dialoge wheel so you couldn't accidently find yourself in a relationship with Kaiden?
What if it was DLC content so you didn't have to download it?

There are so many ways to make it so it doesn't affect those who don't want to see it. Would you be okay with it if you could easily avoid it completely?

A lot of people have been railing against the idea of opening the option with existing characters.

Few have made any statement about the other suggestions presented though. So I'm really curious about why people ignore the other suggestions... If you don't like the idea of opening existing characters up to s/s LI, fine. What about new characters?

Excluding homosexual romances it may be comical is itself a silly concept. As lightice has said, Shepard can already do a great job of making a fool out himself or being the jokester. The renegade options are the best bet for that. I've seen and heard the recorded romance lines for an male shepard/kaidan romance, it's not as if meer suddenly starts speaking in a lisp.

I wouldn't know. However, among of the best indications are the person's own - whether typed or otherwise - words, rather than speculating it from ambiguous text.

Simply my opinion. Heterosexuals already have ample content that caters to them - 9 romances that are open to heterosexuals. Lesbians have 1, or 2/3/4 if you count Kelly/Samara/Morinth, whereas gay males have 0. I would care about actual gay males over the preemptive drooling of fangirls.

Not a problem with it. Actually hoping it so gay players can finally get what they want. Just don't retcon. That's all. Of course, the possibility (as it subjectively seems) of retconning is a fortunate low.
