The people saying that a gay romance would be goofy apparently missed the part where Mordin told femShep not to swallow Garrus' load.

They're also, perhaps, influenced by the unfortunate trend in media of casting gay characters in "clown" roles. If their perceptions are shaped by the "campy extras" they're not thinking about the kind of romantic dialogue most of us seem to be after.

On the flip side, there's nothing wrong with some healthy silliness in love. My partner and I laugh together often. I imagine it would be quite the challenge for the ME writers and voice actors to develop scripts that genuinely came across as spontanous real humour between characters, though.

Let's not forget that all this discussion and planning and thought-process couldn't have been possible without that wonderful personality ReDShiFt making us try even harder, after every, Single, thread.

Don't try logic, it's just a spammer. They go away when they're ignored, or get banned if they don't.

And as for the actual topic, I don't think that anyone immature enough to be banished by the very thought of gay content is part of the target audience, anyway. RPGs are generally marketed for mature, intelligent gamers. F/F content in the first game certainly didn't lower the interest in the slightest.

Well i have been playing rpgs for some time now... memories going back to icewind dale and Baldur's Gate... Dont know if it counts or if i am just stupid but able to play from Kotor to Witcher and Nwn but i have to admit 2 things: The majority of players on mass effect are men so F/F not lowering the interest on the game makes sence and secondly:srsly i like to think that after the experience i have with rpg games i can say to myself that i am a serious gamer. But i also like to think that when i see a game has anything to do with gay content i dont touch it.Thats why i havent played doa.The idea of shepard with garrus...... You know what makes me want to vomit? People that are so close-minded they can't even fathom the possibility of having a gay option in a game. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to play it. And the majority of players is still up for debate, no one has provided a pie chart or a graph to indicate what the majority demographic for mass effect is. And even if it is males age 18-35, why should minority gamers be completely ignored. A gay option would not affect your game at all. Grow up and let other people have fun with their games too

I really like the idea of adding Shepard's orientation to the character creator, and then offering different romance options in response to it.  That should help with people who find the retconning of existing characters problematic ... sure, in your Mass Effect universe Tali's straight, but in mine she's a lesbian.  It also means that people who don't want to see any same-sex romance options wouldn't ... I mean, just set the default to straight, and it's like nothing has changed for them.

It would even give BioWare the option of using that flag for something else in ME3 -- different quests, like you get for spacer/colonist/earthborn in ME1, for example.

If BioWare were really smart, they'd release a same-sex romance DLC for ME1 or 2 now so that they have plenty of time to gauge interest before things get locked down for ME3.  If they did this, and then ME3 didn't include any same-sex options, and they said "look, nobody downloaded the patch for ME1 or 2", then I'd be fine with that.  At least there would be an explanation that makes sense.

Heck, I'd pay for it, even if just to let them know I'm interested, whether it meant DLC or buying some kind of director's cut edition.

This is a great idea.  I think that it would make the game a lot better for some people to inblude gay romances, but I honestly have to say, it would ruin a feeling of close friendship with say, Garrus or Wrex, if one of them tried to make a pass at me.  I can honestly say that I could not have a close guy friend if they were gay, just like I could not have a chick as a close "guy" friend, they just don't fit the part.   You all can call me bigot and immature doucha all you want, but  I'm being honest and that is my opinion, which I am completely intitled to.

None of this is to say that any game with butt stuff loses me as a customer.  Quite the contrary, DOA is one of my top games of all time, but Zevren really did alienate me when he was all like "I want your nuts" over and over again.

This is a great compromise that would allow the inclusion of gay contrent without alianting folks like myself, who would lose something from some of the male teamates.

edit: by "this" I mean the selection of orientation at character creation.

Turians and humans have different amino acid bases, so the ingestion of Garrus's bodily fluids could cause anaphelactic shock in femshep, so Mordin tells her not to swallow.

I think its a pretty safe guess (admittedly its only a guess at this point) that given that we know that certain romances, in particular the Tali one, still have some of the recorded romance dialogue on the disc, that all of the dialogue actually 'was' recorded, and part of it was simply removed. I think the strongest evidence in favor of that theory is simply that the Ashley-FemShep romance is COMPLETELY voiced, and there was literally no chance of that ending up in the game, and yet they did it. Obviously the Tali romance was supposed to be in the game at some point (probably right up til near the end) so there's no reason why it wouldn't have been voiced. So I don't think any additional voicework would be needed, but again thats just a guess. Certainly if for some reason they did have a bit of romance dialogue that hadn't been voiced, what they would do is have them do it the next time they bring them back for DLC content related to whatever else they have planned. Either way, it would be extremely easy to do.

I also want to second the complaint about Jacob. Jacob's a fine character and all, but I pretty much have to avoid him as much as reasonably possible for that very reason, I really wish the Jacob related dialogue was better designed so that you could talk to him like a normal human being :) .

Im editing in his comment about the color-coding:  I dont have a problem with it, because there's actually a REALLY cool precedent for it.  In the game Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (one of the greatest RPGs of all time, for those who haven't played it) virtually every romance option in the game, male and female, was romancable by all characers, male or female, and there were a TON of romance options, and they had color coding for the romance parts (it was called 'seduction' in the game, and it was sort of purpleish, if I recall correctly) so you knew exactly what you were doing, its actually helpful and cool, as its nice to know whether you're doing something that will actively pursue a romance with a given character or not.  I enjoyed it as part of that game, so I know for sure I would enjoy it as part of any other, and Im pretty sure most everybody else would like it too if they had the chance to see it in action.  Its really just helpful and cool.

Exactly this ^_^

I loved that comic strip!  This is somewhat off topic but I hope in the next game you can talk to any of your squadmates even after you turn them down for romance.  I think many people agree that it sucks to turn someone down and then after that they never want to speak to you again.

Anyway, I've been thinking and I agree that not everyone on your squad needs to be bisexual but I really wish they would release dlc so that we had a chance to romance the characters that were planned to be bisexual.  For example, Thane and Tali.  People just need to get over the fact that if I decide to download the dlc, only my squadmate will be bi and if they don't download it then their characters remain straight.  It really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

There are a lot of things in this game that someone like me just has to get over.  For example, after I visit with Aria on Omega as I'm walking away she says to my lesbian Shep, "You should find yourself a young man to keep warm with."  I cringe a little bit but I don't let it ruin the game for me.  This is just an example but there are other instances too.

Have you played the game? I don't mean this antagonistically, I just don't know how much of the characters you've encountered.

Thane, Garrus and Jacob are all easily avoidable romance wise. For the most part, their romance dialogue is straight up and clear ("I want you, Thane" as an example). Jacob just feels thrown at us because Femshep sounds like a ho-bag when talking to him. Veeeeeeeeeeery creepy.

What do you not comprehend about "never played a femshep"?

And the discussion you are replying to is more about the fact that the dialog heads in the direction of romance or no further dialog at all. There is no ongoing platonic dialog if you chose not to romance the opposite sex.

I agree, it shouldn't be that much of a deal, but I wonder if, it's made in a dlc, it will be possible to carry these romances over in ME3. I must admit it would annoy me if it weren't the case... I am not convinced that any dlc product will be taken into account in the main storyline.

lets hot up the romance / sex in ME3. Doesn,t  matter  wether it's girl/girl or boy girl, making the romance /sex a more integral part of the game would only enhance the whole expierience. If more characters were availible for sex/romance or relationships it would also help replay value. the mass effect series is a masterpiece, but more skin would be spot on.Posted Image

No need to be snarky, I was just answering your question.

Since you mentioned nothing of never playing a Femshep in the post I quoted, and the post I quoted was the one I read and thus responded to, I didn't think about it. Because I didn't know you never played a Femshep. Hence the lead in question.
And the point of your post may have been about platonic dialogue, but you did pose the question:

To which I responded: No, Femshep just sounds like a ho-bag when talking to Jacob.

And dialogue that actually appears in the game makes it appear that Tali has a crush on femshep, though nothing physical happens.

Given that all of us interested in the romance issue are very much interested in character relationships in the games, I think you'll find high levels of support for ongoing platonic dialogue with the crew here.
___
I'm rather baffled by the posters who say that they cannot imagine having a friendship with someone who is attracted to them, but not in a romance. Say you play a male Shepard and romance Ashley. Does that mean you're unwilling to befriend Liara, Miranda, Tali, Jack and Kelly?

My main Shepard loathes Miranda (and any "Cerberus stooge"), but I can easily see roleplaying a Shepard for whom she's one of the best options for a friendship of equals. She's smart, competent on the battlefield, an experienced leader. She and Garrus, actually, are the ones most likely to relate to Shepard's experience.
___
On a completely different note, I just started a new ME1 playthrough with a male Shepard. As a player, I've never been fond of Ashley WIlliams, but I'm going to give her romance a go. There's a certain imp of the perverse in me that would find it very amusing, given her backstory and issues with aliens, if Shepard could cheat on her with Garrus (or any turian!!) later in the tale. :bandit:

Miranda and Jack have left over dialog files too.  I'm not sure we can use that evidence to say that Tali was planned as the f/f option.

Thane, however, is interestingly the only male with m/m dialog recorded by Meer.

I really do struggle to picture Thane and Male Shep...kissing. I just can not picture it. Kaiden and Male Shep yeah but Thane?! Since he is some sapient frog his lips must feel like a waxy apple or a plum. My opinion of course but then agaon opinions do not matter on the internet and you will get abuse in some form.
