Speaking of tvtropes (great site), on several of their Mass Effect pages there is mention of the disappointment in the lack of same sex romances in the game (and the two front runners for options, Tali and Kaidan, are mentioned several times).

I see Samara as a less 'femine' asari (compared to Liara, for example).  She has a lot of traits that would be considered 'masculine' in our culture (her strength and independence, the fact that she places duty above personal feelings, etc.)

I almost forgot one thing. When I say "new character" it's a bit inaccurate. "new option" is better. Just someone who hasn't been romancable yet so that the new route fits in the same way for all Sheps.
So Joker, Chakwas, Kal'Reeger, Aria, etc would also count

Sure they do. I have met plenty of gay guys in my life (I live in Miami), and there is something very distinct about being gay. I have met very few guys that I couldn't immediately tell were gay, but it is very easy to tell if someone might be gay. Usually if you think they might be, they are, but not always. However there has never been a case where I met someone that I thought was straight, but was actually gay.

I guess that speaks more to the increasing metrosexual trend than anything else.

As for Mass Effect though, No one has ever come off as anything but straight. Especially Shepard. Seeing Shepard like that would just be a mind warp.

I can understand where you are coming from; except for the fanfic thing, that stuff rots your brains. Anyway, the best part of a BioWare game is choice, and with that is the choice to not do things. A same sex romance in the game would not be forced on a player and most will never have to deal with it.

I can't remember where it was, I think one of the group discussions, but a couple of people mentioned interest in Chakwas.
And let's not forget that Aria is voiced by Carrie-Anne Moss... Which... seriously. How many sci-fi geeks would jump at the chance to proxy-romance Trinity? ME3 would go platinum in three days.

That would be the subculture of the city in question (Miami), plus the fact that when someone's gay and doesn't "look gay," you never notice their orientation unless their romantic relationships happen to come up. Also, Miami.

As far as the reverse goes, femmes have been around in the US as a sociological phenomenon since the 40s, and instances of them have been recorded long before that. (And even having said that, femShep pings my gaydar like nobody's business, though that could just be wishful thinking, much like the assumption that female athletes have The Gay.)

I don't understand....What do you mean by "come off as gay?" I mean, I never looked at Manshep and thought "Wow, that guy is totally heterosexual." There's nothing about him thats blatantly heterosexual, just like there is nothing that is blatantly homosexual. He's just a soldier; one that can be either gay or straight depending upon the player.
