To be fair, absolutely no one in the game comes off as gay, especially not Commander Shepard. I think that's what would make it even more strange and funny to picture him engaged in these acts. Because it would be a guy that is so obviously straight cuddling and holding onto another guy.

Yes because ALL gay men prance around in short shorts and sing showtunes.

Never heard of bears, have you?

I never said they did. They don't have to act like that to come off as gay.

So do tell, how does this especially keen gaydar of yours work? Is it like spidey sense?

lol there's no science to it. You can just tell when you see a guy acting a certain way that seems "off". Certain mannerisms, speech, etc. I have never been surprised to learn that someone was gay that I have met. It's not difficult to tell at all.

Does it involve anything tingling?

He's taking a while to respond, maybe he's tingling at the bear article.

You really need to elaborate. You can say, without a doubt, that there is no chance not one single person you've met, spoken to, associated with etc. on any given day was not a gay person you just assumed was straight because they didn't match your narrow concept of what gay people are/behave like?

While talking about how to spot gays is nice and all, it's getting a bit away from the topic at hand.

Anyway, to keep in the same ballpark but bring it back to Mass Effect, few important characters actually fit a set stereotypes. Most have several stereotypes, the same as real people.

I think people are too quick to be offended when things happen that they don't agree with.

Just because I'm straight, doesn’t me that I should be offended that someone who is not wants to play the game differently than me. Both of our experiences will be different and that is the whole point of RPG games, especially Bioware games.

I'm a fairly good and nice person, so most of my characters turn out to be Paragons. Does that mean I should be angry that there are Renegade choices? Again I say no. I'm sure some would argue that sexuality and whether you are Paragon or Renegade are two separate things, but I think not.

It is all about free choice and not forcing your views on to others.

What I think is funny is that my husband loves playing female characters, but since he is a straight man he usually goes for the lesbian relationship option if it is offered.

If the option is not being forced on you I just don't understand the outrage of it being there for those who choose to go with it. This works with sexuality as much as it does the paragon and renegade actions.

He didn't respond to my saying that of course you don't notice someone's sexual orientation if they don't "look gay" or "act gay" short of their relationships actually coming up, or that his city of residence likely has an effect on what subcultures he actually encounters.

Also: Rob Halford.

I said everyone I've met. Meaning have spoken to, and am aware of whether or not they are gay or straight. I didn't just say people I've seen. Although I have walked by the many gay clubs we have on the strip here and I will say that every single person in or around there looked like a gay person. No one in any of the clubs has ever looked like someone I would mistake for being straight. You wouldn't catch Commander Shepard in there lol.

It's not um, odd you would look at people in a gay club and assume the people inside are gay. I hate using celebrities as an example but if you didn't know beforehand and saw say, Ian McKellen or Michelle Bonilla would your first impression be "yup, that's totally a gay person." Probably not. And yet they are. Openly. (yes Gandalf and Magneto were played by a gay man. I just BLEW YOUR MIND.)

Anyway trying to curve this back into ME... uh. BEARS. If Man!Shep put on like 30 pounds he'd totally be a bear. On renegade anyway. If you chose to give him a beard.

Speaking of celebrities and a-typical characters. I just watched Taking Woodstock tonight and I could absolutely see Liev Schrieber playing a m/m love interest for Shep. He plays a really good gay ex-marine.

The gaystapo, give em an inch and they'll take a mile. I hope bioware never has anything but the absolute most hetero relationships possible forever to teach you annoying, spamming nahtzees a lesson.

I dunno, one of the guys on my rugby team loves men more than women love chocolate and he is the biggest, scariest, meanest, hardest-drinking, trash talking, fight-starting guy I know! Zevram was a bit of a cop-out I think. I mean, his fetish for leather boots and his euro-camp accent just made it hard for me to take him at all seriously as a character! He was more like the comic relief guy who kept turning up in the beverly hills cop flicks than someone who matched the epic feel they were going for. My girlfriend on the other hand loves him.

I'm sure I had a point here, now where was it? (finds it under the sofa cushions)

Right! Once again I think any m/m relationship lines don't have to be along the "hello sailor!" type nor does that mean we should have a toggle for mincing-walk and limp wrist mode (though that would be hilarious). Shepard can be many things at the same time. Hell, Kelly looks like a straight laced good girl but she's up for some private dancing...

...dancing for money...any old music will do...

Hmmm could new alliance rookie "Private Dancer" be Shepard's new LI?

I'm still trying to get my paws on a copy of the book but none of the used bookstores or libraries around here have it. I refuse to pay retail for mass market paperbacks because I know how much the mark up on them is. It's obscene.
From what i've heard about him though he does sound awesome. Him + Samara + My Adept Shep = BIOTIC DOOM

That's a good point. Every time she started going on about how sexy aliens were I desperately wished there was an option to say "I didn't know 'people person' meant hobag." 2+ renegade points.

Fo serious. I have a friend who scares the crap out of most people he meets thanks to the tats, scars, and muscles. He's also in the army so the death-glare he picked up in afghanistan helps. But I know from first hand experience how gay he is. Perhaps this is why it's so easy for me to picture Shep gay since they have a lot in common.

Oh and thank you... I've been trying to build a playlist for ME2 and I couldn't quite figure out what song to represent Kelly... victory!

Yeah, I think she might have experimented a lil too much at University while she was working on that psych degree. She just kept getting turned on for no reason!
