Mass Effect 2 has got to be a G.O.T.Y contender. It's everything a sequel should be.

You are kidding right?

They used a chainsaw where a scalpel was needed and turned the game into a half arsed shoot'em up wannabe .

ME2 is a good game but it certainly isn't a good sequel.  It's the equivalent of a direct to DVD followup to a Hollywood blockbuster.

... In my opinion of course.

LOL.  That's another way to put it and I agree. :(

Ya I know, but God of war 3 is a sequel... Heavy rain is the first chapter in a new franchise (ahem, cliffhanger ending). It is more fresh and exciting. God of war WAS amazing when it first came out, then the 2nd one appeared and it was like taking the first one and adding steroids to every aspect... it didnt have the same effect and was nowhere near as good as the first, in my opinion.

GOW3 is an EXACT clone of 1 and 2. David Jaffe is no longer involved, and game has taken the over the top to a new level. It will be a good hack and slash, but wont ever be nearly as good as the 1st one in any respect. I think GOTY awards should be given to games that have meaning and impact, not just as outlets to mindless carnage as exhibited by Kratos.

I value intelligent games much more than "action" games. If Heavy rain does not win GOTY, Im hoping that award will go either to Alan wake or Last Guardian. Those are the only games I consider contenders in  this years line up (so far).

I was very, very pleasantly surprised by Heavy rain, but who knows, maybe anothere sleeper hit is going to be released this year that will also blow me away!

That's not how the industry choose their game of the year award.

Heavy rain won't win many game of the year award, especially given the critical reception. From what I have seen and read,I even doubt that a lot of site or mag will put it in their game of the year candidate.

Having played Heavy rain myself,I don't consider it a game of the year candidate in any shape or form.I sure wasn't blown away and I just don't see the intelligence in it nor do I see any brillant story.I think the material would make for a direct to DVD movie. It's definitively refreshing among a vast amount of shooters or action games,I'll give it that.

God of War 3 will be a candidate, but it won't win and the formula is already tried and true.Same goes for Mario galaxy 2 which should be a solid sequel (or Gran Turismo 5).

Halo reach will probably be a candidate since it promise a strong singleplayer campaign+great multiplayer.I am not so sure about Alan Wake, but it might be a possible candidate.

Starcraft 2 will be a candidate given the typical Blizzard level of polish+top notch rts multiplayer+simgle player campaign.

The last guardian is made by what I consider the strongest 1st party studio of sony. Some will prefer Naughty dog,but I consider Team Ico to be higher brow.I am sure that the Last guardian will be among the nominees.

I would also keep an eye on both L.A Noire or Red dead redemption which could either be underwhelming or out of nowhere game of the year candidate.

Mass effect 2 will definitively be among the game of the year candidate among 7-9 candidates.

Interesting... did you play the whole game or just a segment?

The game is so different that it creates a genre of its own, that is what innovative implies. It plays out like an interactive film, and for a game to come off as a movie cinema it definetly did its job well. The story was very well thought out  and the emotions portrayed on "screen" were comparable to a drama film. This game made me FEEL an emotion other than frustration and anger.

I was sad, angry, shocked, desperate, heroic, happy and depressed.

I never felt anything like that in a videogame, it was refreshing and one hell of a rollercoaster to play through. I guess it really appealed to me because of what films and games it borrowed from (Seven and Indigo Prophecy), I really loved those homages; it was a great mystery/adventure game.

I wont soon forget it.

I swapped my xbox for my friends ps3 for a while to play heavy rain.

It's really tense - especially during the qts as the characters life can depend on you pressing the right buttons quickly, so not being used to the ps3 controller meant there were some very tense moments...

It's like watching a really good thriller - far more grown up and intense than ME. I love ME, but I think quantic dream is onto a good thing.

HAHAHAHA, that made me laugh. God of War III>Every XBox exclusive.

It is better than Heavy Rain, 20-30 hours of story is a lot better than 6 hours of story. The actual story of Heavy Rain is, however, better than Mass Effect's story.

Looks pretty cool, but I'll wait 'til they post up vids of the stuff on Youtube. QTE's are the bane of gaming (and why God of War needs to be under the noose for bringing them to spotlight) and I'm not gonna pay $60 for a game chock full of 'em.

The fact that Gamepro had a 14-page-story on it, and that it makes claims of change how we see video games make me think this game is a 10-pound syringe of pure pretentiousness to the eyeball. That, and you allegedly have to saw off your own finger. What kind of gore-porn fetishist thought that would be a good idea.

How the hell would Heavy Rain even be considered for GOTY. Seriously the game is rubbish, for a game where the major focus is the story I was expecting something special but instead I get this cliched garbage, also who the hell thought it would be a great idea to have a lot of the game focus on doing quick time events to perform mundane and boring everyday tasks, making sure the characters son does his homework and goes to bed on time, changing babies napies and tying your bosses tie isnt my idea of fun or entertainment.

Sure the graphics are decent, but considering there is no pesky gameplay to get in the way I expected much MUCH better.

I have no idea how Heavy Rain can even be considered for game of the year let alone a game at all. There is no gameplay (apart from quicktime events which are tedious at the best of times) and for a "game" that focuses on story i was expecting much better than the cliched garbage that they gave us, seriously the plots holes are big enough to swallow the state of Texas.

Oh and for those who havent played the game yet the Origami killer is the PI Scott Shelby, yep the game forgets about every piece of evidence used to make you think that Ethan is the killer and without explanation it just jumps to the old cliche that "the bad guy turns out to be the grotesquely obese white guy", seriously the plot holes are bigger than Shelby's massive gut. There are no explantions to explain the pieces of evidence that suggest that Ethan is the killer (seriously if Ethan isnt the killer then why the hell does he have blackouts and wake up with an origami figure in his hand?) and there are no peices of evidence to point out that Shelby is actually the killer until we actually find out that Shelby is the killer. Seriously why is Shelby putting in so much work to "investigate" the Origami killer when he knows that he himself is the Origami killer? It makes no sense at all.

Heavy Rain is garbage, I dont know why anyone would even consider this for GOTY.

I think it's simple really.

There are three types of people in this thread.

Those that can relate to situations in certain games on a deeply personal level.

Those they play video games just to play video games.

And idiots.

All have wildly varying opinions on what is good and what is bad, no one is right or wrong. To quote someone, "They believe 2 is greater than 1, we believe 3 is greater than 2. Both are correct, neither is an error".

I'll let you figure out who is who.

(hint: whoever takes the most predictable troll path and calls me an idiot is probably one.)

Seriously if you want a game that has a great story and engaging plot then stay away from heavy rain, you may trip and fall into one of the games ridiculously huge plot holes.

Even the idiots? Sure they may enjoy the game (each to his own) but to call the game "good" is simply incorrect.

I watched some vids of Heavy Rain. Did not really look interesting or fun to play. Adventure games essentially ended for me with Grim Fandango (well... maybe Longest Journey too).

If anything, this thread has made me realize how great a year this is going to be for gaming.

I'm personally really looking forward to Alpha Protocol.

ME2 is better than ME1, MGS4, uncharted 2 and Fallout3 in my personal opinion. (Yes, i played all of them just to let anyone who wants to rub dirt in my face know).

It may be better than heavy rain but i cannot judge it until i play the game(or until this stupid government approves the game, not ban it and then allow it to be sold).

Hell mass effect was initially banned until 2 weeks later.

Hmmm... I don't really agree at all. As much as I'm loving Mass Effect 2 at the moment, I don't think it's any where near as good as Metal Gear Solid 4. It's better than Fallout though. Uncharted? Hm... I'm not sure. I think it's worse than Uncharted 2 as well. Can't comment on Heavy Rain yet as I'm saving it until I've finished this, Bioshock 2 and Final Fantasy XIII. It certainly looks amazing though, and pretty much everyone that has played the game has said it's a stunning experience.

This is the dumbest comparison ever.

ME2 = PC, X360. No PS3.

Heavy Rain = PS3. No PC, X360.

In other words, the games aren't competing in any way, shape, or form.

To the whinners that don´t like mass effect 2, again mass effect 2 destroy other ps3 exclusive to GOTY

First of all let me say this so that I don't get flamed:

I cannot see any game coming out this year that will compete with Mass Effect 2 for my own personal GOTY award. Besides some minor annoyances I think this game is filled with pure brilliance.

Now, regarding this topic. Heavy Rain is(/was?) only one contender for one GOTY award. I mean how many GOTY awards are there? A lot I guess. But on the other hand, how many potential GOTY titles are there to be released this year? A lot. So what if Heavy Rain isn't what the reviewers thought it would be? There are plenty of other good games coming out this year.

But sure, ME2 has certainly set the bar for the RPG of the year awards. I bet it will win a few of those. GOTY? Well, we'll see, maybe it'll win one or two? I mean, there's got to be hundreds of those.

While I hope ME2 gets good awards. I'm fairly certain it's going to have huge competition in the form of Halo: Reach. Which looks to be simply awe-inspiring.

Personally I think it is pointless to speculate on what will be GOTY at this point in time as it is only the start of March and there are still a lot of potentially great games yet to be released this year. That being said I do not think Heavy Rain deserves GOTY, for Heavy Rain to even come close to GOTY then this would have to be a pretty bad year in gaming.

Alpha Protocol, this is a game that I really want to be good but after watching the trailers and gameplay footage I cant say I have high hopes for. I will probably pick up a copy to see what it is like but at the moment it looks like Alpha Protocol will probably turn out to be a mediocre game with a lot of wasted potential.
