You can use the steps below to do this. But first be warned that it may take a bit of finesse and patience to get the results you want. Also there are no guarantees that it will work as expected, so proceed at your own risk.
(The following is a heavily modified version of the procedure described in the "How to delete unwanted characters & files from your profile" thread. The steps in that thread were intended as a way to get rid of profiles for characters that have been deleted from the game. Please refer to that thread if this is what you want to do.)
Warning: These instructions more or less assume you are using the PC version of the game, since that's what I've got. If you are playing a console version, please bear in mind that you may be unable to get your character's avatar and portrait files uploaded again once you've deleted them from the site. This is due to an issue affecting console versions of the game, which is explained in Snoteye's "Personas, Error Codes, and You" thread.
To start, you should have a look at your diagnostics page. Go to your Dragon Age player profile and click on the "Profile Diagnostics" button above your portrait on the left side of the page. You'll see a listing of all the files you have stored for each of your characters.
Look for the character you're thinking of deleting. Ideally there should be four (and only four) files for the character.
If you see a 1001 error code for the character in question, then the character is probably not showing up on your online player profile at all. The server can't display characters that are missing a Character XML file. And you can't delete characters that the server can't display! Jump ahead to step 10 and get that Character XML uploaded!
Error codes 1002 through 1004 are less problematic, as they won't prevent a character from showing up in your online player profile. They will, however, cause certain details (the character's history, avatar, or portrait) to go AWOL. The procedure below can be used to fix these problems as well. If you're getting one of these error codes and diagnostics says you have three or less files for the character, you can jump ahead to step 10. Or you may wish to start at step 1 and delete the character first; the choice is yours.
If you see a 1005 error, this means the server has extra files for the character in question. These extra files represent storage capacity that could be put to better use, such as screenshots. You can use the procedure below to delete such files and reclaim that storage capacity. Start here:
1. Return to your online player profile page.
2. Click the "Manage Characters" link above your profile photo.
3. Click the "Delete" button under the character you want to delete.
4. Wait for the character to disappear. This can take a while.
This step is important. The browser won't update until the character deletion has been processed. Letting it finish the job will not guarantee a complete deletion, but it can help avoid incomplete deletions.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for any other characters you want to delete.
It's not necessary to delete files for one character at a time, unless you're really worried about getting confused and deleting the wrong character.
6. Open the diagnostics page and see how effective the deletions have been.
At this point, one of three things will have happened for each deleted character:
(A) The site will have deleted all files for the character in question.
This does happen, though as often as one might hope. If it does, you can rejoice! You are now ready to re-upload your character to the website. Jump ahead to step 10.
(
If this happens you will have to re-upload the character, even if you're still getting a 1005 error indicating the presence of files you want to get rid of. Jump ahead to step 10.
© The site will have deleted some of the files, but not the Character XML file.
If this happens, you'll probably want to delete the character again before moving on. Completely deleting the Character XML file seems to be the best way of ensuring that the profile gets updated properly in the long run. Proceed with step 7:
7. Wait a while for the characters to reappear on the profile page.
I've found it helps to use a second computer to access my player profile without logging in to the Bioware site. This generally gets the site to synch up. (To do this, you'll need to enter the URL for your playerprofile.php page directly. Going through the "full profile" page will only get you an error.)
8. Return to your online player profile and click the "Manage Characters" link.
9. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as needed.
It may take several attempts to delete each character completely. Rinse and repeat until you get result (
10. Start the game.
11. Select the Load command, then Switch Characters.
12. Select the character you want to upload.
13. Load the latest save game for that character.
14. Fiddle with inventory a bit (unequip and re-equip armor, et cetera).
This step may not be necessary, but I do it anyway on the off chance it will inspire the game to upload faster.
15. Save the game manually.
16. Wait a minute or two so the game has time to upload the character.
17. Minimize the game, then check the diagnostics page again.
Usually by this point the game will have uploaded some files for the character. If you now have exactly four files and no error codes for the character in question, congrats! You are done with that character! If the diagnostics page says you have either more or less that exactly four files, however, you've still got a bit of work to do.
First check whether a Character XML file exists for the character in question. If the game hasn't managed to upload a Character XML file, return to the game and continue playing that character (running around, accepting quests, fiddling with the inventory) and repeat steps 15 through 17 until the diagnostics page shows that a Character XML file exists for the character. It generally happens pretty quickly.
If you see a Character XML file but the character still has missing files (error codes 1002 through 1004), you have a choice: you can keep on playing and saving the character until all the necessary files get uploaded; or you can go quit the game, go back to step 1, and do it all over again. (If you go the former route, try creating a new save rather than overwrite an existing one. I've found that helps. YMMV.)
If you see a Character XML file and you're getting a 1005 error, you're going to have to delete the character again to get rid of those extra files. Go back to step 1 and start over. Hopefully you'll have better luck next time.
That's the end of another wall o' text, folks. I hope it's useful.
Credit as usual to Snoteye and SusanStoHelit, along with all the other folks who have contributed to the original stickied wall o' text. Cheers!
