Im nearing the end of my first playthrough, either for giving up or completion :)

Im quite interested in playing a mage next time through but my experience with computer games is that mages are pretty unplayable if you want to play properly.

By that i mean in the parts where you have to solo (no spoilers plz) they will be difficult or impossible to play.

Is this true? I played on second hardest difficulty so far and there are parts where i am thinking i made it just too hard, i had to sort of cheat a bit at one point using stealth to get past a load of enemies with my main character, and then opening the door on the final battle which warped the rest of the party to me (yes i feel bad about it)

|So would a mage be realistic, and if so should i play on normal this play through, is that a better option?

Im playing the ps3 version (non lagging one :))

Thanks for your input guys and gals.

My first play through was with a mage, although he was an arcane warrior.

My second playthrough is with a Dalish Elf Ranger.

I just now started a playthrough using mods (i didn't use them for the first two for fear of expansion compatability problems). This one is also a mage.

The thing with mages in this game is they take a lot of micromanagement. If you're good at that sort of thing they are the most powerful class in the game and you can solo with them just fine. Be sure to buy lots of flasks and lyrium dust though. You will use a lot of mana potions unless you go with blood magic.

Mages are extremely adept in the world of Thedas. They're considerably more powerful than the other two classes, since they can fulfill both melee roles (if not at the same time) just as well as the other two classes if spec'd into Arcane Warrior. Their Crowd-Control is better than the Warrior and Rogue combined, as well as their overall damage output if you take spell combinations and the willingness to use them into consideration. There definitely wouldn't be any serious trouble on your part regardless of what specializations you choose or which difficulty you play on outside of Nightmare.

You definitely shouldn't be playing on Normal if you managed to get through on Hard, but we're not here to decide what difficulty you play on - only you can determine what's best for you in this regard. One would argue that everything you're asking in your post can be determinable by one's self, but that's not exactly the point of these kinds of boards, so I'd recommend you go with what you're suggesting.

I also wouldn't call such a thing like sneaking past enemies inside a dungeon cheating. From a roleplaying standpoint, your Rogue knew exactly where to go and how to circumvent whatever blocked his path. The mindset of a sneak is to naturally evade unnecessary conflict. It's the same here. You thought it troublesome to force your way through, so you solved it the way only a rogue would.

See it's not cheating if you're a rogue. THat's what they're good at and it makes sense.

If you're a warrior sneaking around in plate armor that's just silly though.

I played as a warrior on my first playthrough, a mage on my second, and a rogue on my third (and current), and out of all three, I had the easiest time as a mage. I guess it all depends on the build, though. I should also mention that I've only played on normal difficulty, so while I felt that the mage was relatively more powerful on normal when fighting alone, I can't say with certainty that this is true on higher difficulty levels.

I play only on hard and above. Haven't had any trouble with my rogue or mage.

I meant it was cheating because how did the rest of my party get their without being spotted? :P that was my problem with it. There was no way they were getting past the guards like my rogue had, yet once i went into the room with the cutscene they were there with me. But it was either that or spend an eternity trying to fight my way past heheh.

Im going to try mage then if i can finish this rogue, im loving it but now in the final few acts its got so hard i have to attempt fights a few times in a row. Thanks for all your advice.
