I don't know how much of this is caused by the patch, but the game ran like a top on my machine until I downloaded the patch 1.01. I run a windows xp, athlon 3.7, 2gb ram, geforce 9800, and since installing the patch the game crashes sometimes, and I'm having a problem with Grunt who is shown as loyal but I can't spec into his forticfication. On squad info screen he's shown as loyal, on squad points screen he isn't loyal, nor is he in combat. Help?

I'd say try re-installing the patch. If that fails copy your saves somewhere and re-install the game.

The Grunt loyalty bug is a known issue with doing a Tuchanka sidequest after Grunt's loyalty mission, it's been there since before 1.01.
The crashing I'm not sure, supposedly 1.01 was going to make single cores run better.
