Well, for one thing the armor worked very different.

You could find or purchase random armor, weapons, weapon upgrades, and then go into a separate screen where you could apply different items to different team members.

The thing was... you were stuck with whatever armor you had in your inventory. You couldn't edit the color or overall look like you can in ME2. If the best armor you had was pink, well.. It's use pink armor or sacrifice better armor for grey and white camo (as an example).

The thing was, the weapons were alot more confusing in ME1 and the time it took throughout the game to simply add various upgrades to your various team members' weapons took a LONG time.. And then you couldn't decide sometimes to give item A or B.. So it took a while to move upgrades around and disseminate the best items to the team members that needed them the most. ME2 is much more straightforward and "user-friendly" I think.

I believe Garrus did look a little bit "lighter" in ME1 but are you sure you're not talking about the armor?

I'm also wondering why the default Shepard never looks the same twice in screenshots and other stuff I've seen online and in the game. For some reason he actually looks really wierd unless you customize his appearance (or did so in ME1 and carried over your game to ME2).

In the opening screen before you click "play" you see shepard at the bottom and he looks like an idiot staring off into space. But he always seems to look different. Just compare this image with the image of shepard on the game case. Doesn't even look like the same guy.

yes there was a pre release video that was out well before ME1 came that featured a somewhat different sheperd and garrus' eyepiece was on the opposite side and was yellow. totally forgot about that until now

Some of that old footage was neat, like the old ability to pause and move the little people icons to direct squadmates, and some planets that never made it in, and Phoenix armor being red instead of pink.

You could also control teammates in the old ME1 builds apparently.

In actuality, although ME2 is better than ME1 imo, ME1 was a pretty revolutionary game when it came out. It was totally different than anything else I'd ever played.

Plus, Mass effect has that bioware sort of robotic/computerized ambience that makes it so much more enjoyable. Because, in alot of ways it's about the little things in ME1 that made it great.

Shepard's head bob while walking/running (later incorporated into ME2), exploring an entire galaxy without knowing what you'd find next, The way the crew really rallied around their leader (it's alot different in ME2).
