Tron: Deadly Discs - Old intellivision game but lots of fun and addictive.

I own the 2600 version of Tron: Deadly Discs. Awful game. I assume the Intellivision version was worthwhile though, or you wouldn't post about it. It reminded me of Pong and had pretty awful graphics... or I thought so even back then. :o But really almost all 2600 ports were terrible.

Probably Suikoden 2.

Although it had/has a cult following and is undoubtedly the best of the whole series, it was always overlooked for some reason, probably because of the somewhat less serious art (cheerful and not grim-dark enough, as a friend of mine is very quick to point out) that gave the people impression that it was yet another cutesy anime JRPG when it was in fact probably one of the better stories told in the genre because it's not your typical "I'm a spiky haired hero who has to save the world... yay!" but is instead actually quite militaristic with warring states and politics between them (something that FF12 tried much later, but lacked the character involvement of S2). Not to mention that Suikoden games have always had a pretty much unique elements them (combat system in the first 2 is probably uniquely their own and let's not even talk about LODS of characters (with actual character, not just blank slates) you could, but didn't HAVE to, recruit during your journeys).

To be honest, it's probably THE best JRPG on PS1 if you ask me. Not pretentious or cheap and yet very deep and emotionally engaging.

P.S.

Honorable mentions go to Legacy of Kain series as a whole, games you simply play for their phenomenal and definitely one-of-a-kind story. I'll be the first to admit that their gameplay has always lacked something, but I'll be damned if they don't feature one of the best game stories ever told, both in their complexity, characters and emotional impact of the unfolding events.

Yeah, I agree with you, Morrowind just has something special. I still occasionally get the urge to call someone a n'wah or s'wit. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png

I think it's Morrowind itself (as in, part of Vvardenfell) that was very intriguing and so alien with it's Ashlanders, Ghost Gate and other things that it interested all kinds of players who were even back then already sick of generic meadows as a setting for RPGs.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Magna Carta 2, it sports a really great story and a lovely character design. The fact that it's an xbox 360 exclusive and the non-existant promotion made it go almost unnoticed, but it's one of the best JRPGs this generation

World of Goo--this was a genious title that many hardcore gamers overlooked despite incredibly positive press. I found this to be a fantastic hit and loved it a lot.

Spore Galactic Adventures--go ahead and boo now, I know, I know. That said, while Spore didn't invent any fantastically new gaming ideas, the user-created content is absolutely exceptional. I have never seen such awesome creativity from a community ever. If you relied on the reviewers' interpretation of Spore, you're going to miss the key: people make amazing stuff for this game. As a father, it's one of the few games I let my kids play anytime they want because it's the most amazing sandbox I've ever seen. Definitely underappreciated.

Sins of a Solar Empire--another RTS. Best balance I've ever seen in an RTS. Fantastically different factions with a superimposed pirate faction that screws up even the best laid plans. Great graphics, terrific stability, perfect gameplay. If you're an RTS fan, missing SOSE is a mistake. I find it much better than the Starcraft series, personally.

I played the original Spore. (TyraxLightning)

I got my $50 bucks outta the original game, but the expansions & add-ons I judged too expensive for what they offered. I have no regrets about the original game though. :)

I'm no longer active on Spore, but feel free to gawk at my Creations on there if ya wish. :D My favorite ship creation is my 2nd one I ever made, my Star Screamer, & my highlights, creature-wise, are my Gigas Dragon, Quack Doctor, Znoork, Znaark, Xurg, & my last (imho) good one, my Ixich.

For the Topic, one of my favorite PS2 Games is hard to find & seems little heard of, but it has superb story, (imho) top-notch voice acting including on the units, is a 2D Tactical RPG, & deserves a LOT more proliferation: GrimGrimoire

Edit: Hyperlinked creations for easier finding, & added 1 more to my list. :D

The pc version of Rise of the Argonauts. An amazing action rpg IMO. Something like Jade Empire but based in Greek mythology.

For me, the greatest game OF ALL TIME has been Grim Fandango.

That's not to say it is the game greatest game of all time, but it should be. "My scythe. I like to keep it next to where my heart used to be."

Nice picks all around. I was actually thinking about posting the Myth series myself, as well as Flashback (although I haven't played Fade to Black). I also really liked Fear Effect. Now Grim Fandango reminds me:

Psychonauts (PC, Xbox, PS2). I was reluctant to consider this game underappreciated, as it was a critical favorite and has a big cult following, but screw it-- Psychonauts is underappreciated, if only because still not nearly enough people have played it. It's almost certainly one of my ten favorite games ever.

Probably not as underrated as those you guys posted but:

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (I consider it the best Zelda)
Peter Jackson's King Kong (only great directly movie based game I've ever played)
The Paper Mario games really deserve a lot more praise than they get. Very innovative for JRPGs

I think there's a difference between underrated and just unknown. Planescape: Torment is a pretty unknown game, but a lot of the people who played it holds it high above all other games.

Anyways, I'd put a vote down for NWN2: Storm of Zehir. I loved the party creation system, I loved the lack of cutscenes and narrative forced on the player, I *loved* the party conversation system, I loved the Overland Map. There are a millions of things I could nitpick and criticize in the game, but lord, I always have so much fun when playing it. I replay it pretty often.

Paper Mario is one of my favorite Mario games to date! :D I hope to someday get to play Paper Mario 2.

2 other games that aren't legendary, but are (imho) at least 'good', are Spellforce 1 & 2. There's some room for imporvement, but I think they have a good, solid game foundation. Worthy stories as well without getting in the way of the action! I never got to play any of the Expansions, but I hope for a well built & cared for Spellforce 3.

Legend of Dragoon didn't live up to it's potential, but it was definitely at least 'OK'. <3Shana<3

Dark Cloud had potential as well, but being a slave to the Repair Powder to stop the weapons from breaking from overuse broke the game fun for me, so I never got past the 1st area. The Repair Powder slavery jammed my game fun like a metal rod into a Garbage Disposal. :( If it wasn't for this design, the game woulda been good. I hear Dark Cloud 2 is even better yet, but I researched it & it still has the Repair Powder/Weapon Durability system, so it scared me away from #2 as well.

I know what you mean by the repair powder i tended to carry 2 or 3 weapons which made it easier and ment i could combine them sooner.

I was going to mention Psychonauts earlier and thought not to because it *does* have a huge cult following. Since we're rule bending I'll throw a nod to...

Beyond Good & Evil

A very good action game that sold terribly. You controlled a scrappy reporter named Jade as she tried to uncover a major conspiracy. The game got bonus points with me right off because Jade's weapon of choice is a staff. It had a fancier name but basically, it was a staff, and I love staff weapons. Gameplay was a mix of straight up combat and stealth, and it was possible to snap pictures to further support her conspiracy busting ways. BG&E also had a great soundtrack. One of the better ones I've heard in the last few years.

There was talk of a sequel for awhile but that seems to be in limbo now; which is very unfortunate.

I have to agree with Legend of Dragoon. That was a great little JRPG, and it had a very innovative battle system for its time.

Although I personally wouldn't say it was innovative (more like "ARGHH, please make it stop!" after a few hours and once you realize that you'll be timing them buttons for the rest of the game... or at least until you get an upgrade), but it at least kept you on your toes all the time and it was an interesting high-budget western foray into JRPG s. Game's only real failing was how LONG the battles were, especially the boss battles, mainly because you had to rely on Defend which also restored your health.

Good lord, I can't even remember how long boss fights were, like, over 30 minutes easily.

Don't know if you would consider it underrated or even a game... But Dreamfall: The Longest Journey always felt like a brilliant experience not picked up on by a lot of people.

I enjoyed Dreamfall quite a bit. Not nearly as much as the Longest Journey, and the "ending" was plain cruel, but it was good. I would definitely classify it as a game.

I enjoyed a very old game called Rage of Mages, a little similar to Baldur's Gate, very good.

Another one is Chronomaster. A point & Click adventure with a VERY good plot :D

I dug Dreamfall quite a bit. And now:

Space Station: Silicon Valley (Nintendo 64)

One of the weirdest and coolest games of its generation, I think. How many other games have you playing as a spider-like computer chip that crawls around and jumps into and possesses the dead bodies of animal robots in a giant zoo in outer space?

You get to control dogs, birds, penguins, fish, bears, sheep, rats that poop explosives, and flying fox airplanes. And yet few enough people played it back when it came out, and fewer still seem to remember it now. If that isn't criminal underappreciation, I don't know what is.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines--generally morally bankrupt (it's rated adult for a reason), and not something I'd mention to my pastor that I play, but oh, so very much fun. Also, Psychonauts. Totally quirky fun from the very start, though I still have to finish it.
