Tron: Deadly Discs - Old intellivision game but lots of fun and addictive.

I own the 2600 version of Tron: Deadly Discs. Awful game. I assume the Intellivision version was worthwhile though, or you wouldn't post about it. It reminded me of Pong and had pretty awful graphics... or I thought so even back then. :o But really almost all 2600 ports were terrible.

Nothing had good graphics back then.

Well, yeah. I meant that it looked particularly ugly and the gameplay was disappointingly simplistic, even for an Atari 2600 game. I have no idea how the two versions differ though.

Too many to list, but of the recent ones: Machinarium and King's Bounty - The Legend & Armored Princess ★★★★★

Armored Princess... I still need to buy that. King's Bounty is great though. Is it that underrated? I was under the impression it sold decently.

underrated = I don't see many people talking about it.

It was pretty darn addictive and highly entertaining for a single-player turn-based strategy game with basically little story.

Check out Machinarium though - one of 2009's best, and I won't even add "IMO" to that. <3

Shadow of the Colossus and Ico...Great gems that did well critically, but could only be considered commercial "cult hits" at best.

It looks like Sony has learned its lesson. It already seems to be nudging The Last Guardian into the spotlight.

If you go by reviews then it wasn't underrated.
It's not out in stores yet so I'd assume a lot of people don't know about it (but it's been available for digital purchase for a few months now). Get it! Get it! Get it!

I go by copies sold and word of mouth popularity. I didn't think King's Bounty or Armored Princess were all that underground. That's all I meant by my previous post. I plan to get it eventually but it has a spot on my low priority list beside Divinity 2 and Awakening. It's my first choice out of those three, however.

Street Racer (PS) - The best answer I ever saw to Mario Kart on the PlayStation. It was an inane bit of fun with an eclectic cast of characters. I don't think it was ever regarded as good or popular, but boy I loved that game.

Future Cop: LAPD (PS) - Basically just a mech shooter and one of the more memorable PS games I remember. The multiplayer was sublime. But again, not exactly regarded as a classic.

Age of Wonders (PC) - Turn based Fantasy Strategy game. I notice someone mentioned Age of Wonders II on here earlier, but AoW II went in a completely different direction to the first game which was all about the culture, the lore and immersing you into the game world. AoW 1 provides the purer, simpler experience and I think it's a real shame that its existence is all but unknown. I think it's exemplary of its genre.

Discworld adventures where so much fun , especially Discworld Noir for pc.
Also Gothic 2 was fun game.

From newer games i would say Saboteur is rly good game with good story , amazing atmosphere of Paris in ww2 , excellent music and is nice combination of stealth like in Hitman and AC and open world like GTA

In England if you went into a PC game store and asked about King's Bounty I would suspect no one would know what you're on about. It became very hard to get very quickly (and stayed at full price for a while) and then I got my copy for £5 maybe a year/year and a half later (very rare/unusual for a game to go from £30 to £5 in such a short time). I'd guess it didn't sell well, and I don't remember many adverts for it.
Shame really, but Armored Princess is amazingly good.

 Now, a potentially controversial one:

Deus Ex: Invisible War (Xbox and PC).

I include this one because it is an object of scorn for most fans of the original game, and I will never understand quite why.  Obviously, different strokes and all that, but for me, as a huge fan of the original who bought it when it first released and considers it one of his favorite games of all time, I honestly wasn't really disappointed in any significant ways with Invisible War.

As far as sequels go, I think it does a better job than most at following up on possible consequences of actions taken in the first game, and once you start meeting the characters from the first game and figuring out what's going on... well, I think it's pretty damn cool.  And as for the "dumbed down" allegation that is often tossed around... personally, I don't think that the true strengths of the original game lie in the skill points system, different ammo types, really large environments, etc.  And some of the changes made in Invisible War are blessings just as much as curses (ie smaller environments lack the scale of, say, Liberty Island in the first game, but feature less empty space and probably tighter level design.  And skills in the first game were fun, but several of them were useless).

Anyway, not trying to start any fights or anything... I know how much most people hate this game.  I'm just saying, for me, it's one of the great underappreciated sequels.

Vietcong for PC, first FPS I can think of that had decent CO-OP(or co-op at all for that matter but could be mistaken there), plus there were so many custom maps.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace....the game. I had it for the PC...it was rpg-ish in nature, but more of a platformer action game. Extremely fun and pretty difficult. It was a great game, and naturally underrated...being a movie-game and all.

Also, there was a Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring RPG that came out for consoles that I liked. Again, underrated but it was very good for a movie-game.

I see all these games like Planescape: Torment and Morrowind....these are NOT underrated. If anything, they are glorified to unrealistic proportions by their rabid fanbase, especially the former.

I miss a lot old fashion arcade games. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is the closest you can get to the old days Final Fight, Streets of Rage or Warriors of Fate.

Prototype, specifically its story. I won't touch into the gameplay, I  personally liked it. But I think its story is underrated, because it's too complicated and perhaps not presented as well as it should have been. Mind you, you can only really understand the story if you get all webs of intrigues (which is an awesome way to learn more, but can get somewhat tiedous).

The dynamics, similarities and contrast between Blacklight, Alex Mercer / Zeus (virus made sentient), Elizabeth Green (mother to blacklight and Pariah), the Master Hunter (Cure / virus hybrid) and Pariah (the only one naturally born with the virus) is really interesting. Sure the game starts as a cliche government conspiracy and seemingly with a guy with amnesia. But if you really delve in it, I think the general story is interesting.

I would love to see a new, well-made update of the beat-'em-up genre.  I mean full blown, finding hamburgers in oil drums in alleyways, beating a hundred identical guys named Axel to death, and randomly smashing cars for no reason.

I know it would probably need to have a bit more going for it to hold up to modern standards, but I think it could (and should) be done.

The Void - Very great innovative game with interesting gameplay and world, also russian. Russian games are also ****ed up, but good

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - One of the best unknown games I've ever played. The story is really good, you play sneaky scenes, escape scenes, actions scenes, you discover ancient ruines under the ocean, trap filled islands and whole lot of other stuff. Oh yeah, and your character easily freaks out and is afraid of heights. So no looking down and no looking at creepy mosters for too long. It also has a health system where can apply different medic stuff on different limbs of your body. If you jump down somewhere you also may break your leg.

Cryostasis - Another gem. Was released not long ago. You are trapped in a abandoned ship while outside everything is freezing. Actually, even the inside is so freezy that the game's health system is based on heat. You can hold your hands on warm objects to regain health. On your journey through the ship you discover bodies and you can relieve their last minutes and try to save them, often opening up a way for you to go on. You can also play a polar bear one time. After you adjusted to the whole body switching and saving life stuff it gets extremely WTF-like. Honestly.

There are a lot of other games I would like to suggest, which were a lot of fun to me but I decided to only talk about innovative games where the story is main focus and which will be remembered a long time after completion.

Ooo, thanks for reminding me! I need to pick up the PC version.

Are there any "free" downloadable games out there?

I'm mostly interested in something that can keep my attention until DragonAge: Awakening and Mass Effect DLC are released :-)

Surf around for an old, but good text-based game called 'Dungeons of Moria'. :)

Anything Chtulhu related, from Shadow of the Comet till Dark Corners of Earth is awesome. Well, Prisioner of Ice was not that great, true, but still; the very first Alone in the Dark was, by far, the best one ever made.

Bayonetta hasn't gotten as much attention as anyone who's played it would have liked. The gameplay is top notch. Some of the best boss battles in any action game present.
