Do you need to romance anyone or is it just something to add a little spice to the game?Posted Image

Depends on how you want your game to end. If your a HN you can marry royalty so to me that right there is a bonus/advantage but it might be a bigger bonus depending on other expansions they bring out or it may not lol. But just doing the romance in this game does spice it up, makes it more of a challenge. It's basically all up to the player themselves. Try it n if you don't like it then whatever/however you want to do your ending you can always break-up with your romance.

There's a big disadvantage in that Alistair for girls, possibly Morrigan for boys (never tried it), and Leliana and Zevran for both genders convince themselves they are in a relationship with you, force you to 'choose' between them, and lose massive approval for not picking them, even if you've never actually talked to them before the confrontation. Then again, Alistair is a virgin raised by the Chantry since he was ten and the rest of the LIs are arguably crazy, so maybe that's not so surprising after all.

I'm currently in a romance with Al.I was just wondering if it was necessary or just for fun.

Honestly I don't think it's necessary but you do miss out on a lot of stuff not doing any kind of romance.

I went through Mass Effect 2 and was fine not romancing anyone. However, I can't imagine I'd like Dragon Age as much if Leliana weren't a love interest.

Would you even play DA if it didn't have Leliana in it? I don't know how you'll make it if Awakening doesn't have her in it lol:)

It's just for fun. It's easy to get too invested in a romantic character and take your eye off the ball when you have more pressing concerns ahead of ya. You can break up anytime you want. ;)

Marrying royalty is independent of the romances though.  My HNF never romance Alistair and still end up married to him usually, and HNM are certainly not romancing Anora.

Edit: But the romances are fun.  They are very well done and make the stories more personal.

I'd like to add that romancing Alistair can be problematic if you consider him a mainstay of your party AND want him to survive the Blight.

I've never done any of the romances, it's quite possible to get the stat buffs without them. The only thing you miss out on is some alternate endings and dialogues I believe.

 Define "advantage".

You do gain bonuses for increasing your companions' approval, but you can do that without romancing any of them. However, doing the right romance "moves" can help boost their approval. Be careful, though, without mods if you try more than one at once, you'll run into jealousy. And handling that problem wrong will result in somebody's hurt feelings and lost approval.

For some, they do it to see the games' famous, errrr, underwear scenes. The game's rating won't let you see more than that. I'm sure some perverse modder at some point will take the cutscenes further, eventually. They already have the "true nude" body mods.

Now there's an ending where you *have to* bed Morrigan if male (well if you want to survive and you don't want Alistair or Loghain to die instead) ... but that opportunity comes whether you were romancing her or not. (And if female or you don't want the do the deed, you can have Alistair or Loghain bed her instead.)

And obviously a female char - but has to be human Noble - has the opportunity to become queen, errr, princess-consort, or whatever, if romancing Alistair, and he becomes king.

Flip side: human noble males can marry Anora if she becomes queen and you offer to marry her as a condition of support, thus becoming, oh, prince-consort, or whatever, but that's a bit more "arranged marriage" than "romance".

Whether your royal status will matter in the expansion -- well, see the threads for that.

There's nothing you really "get" out of romancing Zevran or Leliana to the end, other than a happy ending.

Frankly, though, the song Leli sings at camp (which she'll do even if not being romanced) and the tribute she gives at your funeral (if you choose sacrifice and she was in love with you) are really beautiful. Her voice actress clearly knows how to sing.

My first playthrough I didn't romance anyone and only occasionally talked with my companions - didn't even recruit Sten.  The only significant impact was Zevran betraying me cause I hadn't raised his approval enough.  Aside from that, you can have a successful ending.  Did the ritual, put Anora-Alistair on the throne together, everything was generally good.  The various romances and friendships do add considerable depth to the story, as well as potential for conflict and tragedy depending on how you run The Landsmeet and beyond.  I think that's what makes the game playable multiple times without becoming overly redundant.

I don't see what the problem is.  You can romance him, make or don't make him king, don't take Morrigan's ritual, sacrifice yourself without losing Alistair.

Leave him at the gate when your at the final battle.  Don't have to worry about him thinking he's got to do the right thing by sacrificing himself.  You take that choice away from him if you leave him at the gate.

Primarily, I see romance as added spice in character development. In this game, romance includes friendships, rather than simply a lover of choice; the better your approval rating of a companion, the better their skills to compliment your own, making the party more effective over all.

So, yes, it (romance) does have an affect on things.

I think the romances in this game, while not necessary persay, are still woven very well through the story. They feel like they matter in the sense that those around you will be talking about them, and the potential to influence the story line in a significant way is there. I definitely thought the romances in this game added a depth to the storyline missing from the romances in, say, ME2. But that's just me. And while many have pointed out that Al and Morrigan's romances have the potential to affect the plot, Lel and Zev's shouldn't be discounted, either. I found the most meaningful romance in the game (for me personally) was Zev's. They all have their own little stories to them that really compliment the main game quite well.

Has anybody said that having romances unlocks achievements needed to get a 100% completion of the game.
