I went through Mass Effect 2 and was fine not romancing anyone. However, I can't imagine I'd like Dragon Age as much if Leliana weren't a love interest.

In ME2 the romances suck if you are male and drive fems, and like you i have done ME2 without a LI i have also done ME recently just for kicks with out a romance interest. ME can be played without any romance options and you do not really miss anything. DAO on the other hand they are very well done and you certainly do miss out on stuff not plot related per say, but making a choice opens up more random dialog exchanges between the party members that are quite entertaining. My recommendation is to go with the LI that makes you the most comfortable and just enjoy the ride, it is worth it, trust me.

Well you choose. The Hero certaintly don't have to romance anyone in the group. He don't have to fall in love with anoyone just like you would in life.Sure you travel with them for over 2 years but .. well .. You can have sex without romancing anyone.. just like in life!

Frankly, though, the song Leli sings at camp (which she'll do even if not being romanced) and the tribute she gives at your funeral (if you choose sacrifice and she was in love with you) are really beautiful. Her voice actress clearly knows how to sing.

AFAIK, that's not her voice actress singing.

Yeah, apparently it's whoever sings some of the other melodic sing-songy portions of the soundtrack.... I didn't notice at first, but yep.

Oh well ... kind of a "milli vanilli" situation.

It IS a beautiful song, and I like watching your companions' silent, but evocative, emotional expressions, as the camera pans around to them watching & listening.

I almost wish there would be a moment where she sings you, and you alone, a love song, as a sign of her devotion to you. But I'm just a sappy romantic like that.

Moments like that make me enjoy the OTHER part of a CRPG, which is when it satisfies in ways that don't involve slaying enemies.

BTW, I also like some of the stories that Leliana tells as well. Some won't sit through to listen to them all. I do. Most of them have a pretty bittersweet ending. Kind of like the story in which she finds herself.

With the exception of marrying into royalty angle if you're playing a HN, it 's mostly there for spice. Extra spice added by certain mods.

About the Leliana singing alone to you, I think that would be awkward. I could understand why some would like it, but I don't think the game could provide good enough facial expressions for it to not look like she's expressionless.

Getting married has nothing to do with romance in this game

Getting married would be an awful nice perk though. You can't tell me that you wouldn't marry Zevran, ejoslin. I wouldn't believe you lol

Well, my Wardens DO end up engaged to him, even though my HNFs always marry Alistair instead.  With the clear understanding that the heir she's working on is NOT Alistair's.  He seems to think it's a good idea too

Edit: I really do like Alistair!  And he's so funny in that situation; poor guy.  My warden hopes he's working on making one too!

 Define "advantage".

You do gain bonuses for increasing your companions' approval, but you can do that without romancing any of them. However, doing the right romance "moves" can help boost their approval. Be careful, though, without mods if you try more than one at once, you'll run into jealousy. And handling that problem wrong will result in somebody's hurt feelings and lost approval.

For some, they do it to see the games' famous, errrr, underwear scenes. The game's rating won't let you see more than that. I'm sure some perverse modder at some point will take the cutscenes further, eventually. They already have the "true nude" body mods.

Now there's an ending where you *have to* bed Morrigan if male (well if you want to survive and you don't want Alistair or Loghain to die instead) ... but that opportunity comes whether you were romancing her or not. (And if female or you don't want the do the deed, you can have Alistair or Loghain bed her instead.)

And obviously a female char - but has to be human Noble - has the opportunity to become queen, errr, princess-consort, or whatever, if romancing Alistair, and he becomes king.

Flip side: human noble males can marry Anora if she becomes queen and you offer to marry her as a condition of support, thus becoming, oh, prince-consort, or whatever, but that's a bit more "arranged marriage" than "romance".

Whether your royal status will matter in the expansion -- well, see the threads for that.

There's nothing you really "get" out of romancing Zevran or Leliana to the end, other than a happy ending.

Frankly, though, the song Leli sings at camp (which she'll do even if not being romanced) and the tribute she gives at your funeral (if you choose sacrifice and she was in love with you) are really beautiful. Her voice actress clearly knows how to sing.

Leliana sings at your funeral if she's in love with you? Hmm. Odd. My character and her were inseperable, although they never did the "tent" scenes together (because I accidentally raised her approval too fast). All Leliana did was (SPOILER) join you in the afterlife, as implied in the epilogue.

Well, actually, as I understand it (and didn't do the ending so I only know from metagame reading), she composes a ballad to you.

However, from reading further, it seems no, she never actually sings it, nor do you see (textually) what was in it. You just know she created a ballad in your honor.

And then yes, apparently, if you romanced her, never broke it off, never "hardened" her, and you do UltSac, she goes "Romeo & Juliet" and decides to join you in the realm of the Maker ... of course, so she believes.

If it weren't for the romances, I wouldn't be still playing this game and eagerly awaiting the expansion pack (yes, yes, I KNOW there's no romance in it). I know they aren't for everyone and they aren't necessary to enjoy the game, but you get so much more out of it if you at least try to befriend your team mates. The game was designed to suck you in in every way, not just with the story and the fighting but also with the relationships you could build (even if you don't take them to the romantic level).

I don't get why non-hardened Leliana commits suicide...

Isn't there something in the Chant (like in the bible) that says bad things happen to those who take their own life?

(seeing as the chantry is based on the catholic church...)

Leliana doesn't follow the chant, exactly.

The romances each have their own magic and for your own enjoyment you should try all of them you could even do all three on a single playthrough if you play your cards right. But the best RP is when your P falls for one character and you RP the game with the intent of squeezing out all the happiness you can from your LI. The game is by far more rewarding and satisfying in replayability that way.
