His stories are amusing, he's good in combat and I'm always amazed at how detailed he looks...but compared to the rest, kind of lacking in the depth department.

He's the best of a sorry lot. I usually grab him right away so that I can dump Jacob asap and he stays in my squad for 80% of the game. He's got good skills and isn't loaded down with a bunch of tedious dialogue intended to get me 'emotionally engaged'. He's also on my short list of survivors with Garrus, Samara, Tali and Legion. I make sure that everyone else dies on the suicide mission. Hopefully, I can extend his contract and continue to use him in ME3.

I don't hate him for one reason: he was free.  If I had paid for him, I'd hate his guts.  It's not that he's a weak character (though he is a bit canned) or that he hardly ever talks (I wouldn't really care what he had to say if he did.)  The problem for me is that he seems like he fell right out of Star Wars, and not in one of those warm, fuzzy "homage to other space opera stories" ways either like that Scottish guy down in engineering.  He feels literally like he needed a break from hanging around in Jabba's palace on Tattoine so he thought he'd give ME a try.  ME was designed NOT to feel like Star Wars.  (Note the utter lack of droids and robots in any kind of servile position in ME1 beyond the very distinctive geth.  Note the lack of any organized biotic "order."  Note the emphasis on aliens as something besides sidekicks and comic relief.)  Bioware started skirting much closer to Star Wars in ME2, but they could only safely do that once they had established their own unique foundation.  Now, they can throw in some homages and such for fun, but.  Zaeed for me is not a homage.  He's not a dash of Star Wars in ME for fun like the silly lines the mechs say when you shoot them.  He's completely in the wrong universe IMO and the juxtaposition is jarring.

The best thing about the Zaeed DLC is the trash compactor.  I'm not kidding. I don't want to reveal the number of trash cubes I ejected into space, but then...I have a quirky sense of humor.

I like his character. He's pretty cool, and I like his stories and his outlook on things. Pretty funny at times too. He's not anywhere near my favorites, but I still like him.

Nope, that's not it.  Wrex is a badass merc and he's a ME character through and through.  I can't quite put my finger on it with Zaeed.  The name is part of it...Zaeed Massani, Carth Onasi, Obi-Wan Kenobi.  It just fits right in.  The accent is another part.  He's got this Bobba Fett crossed with Canderous Ordo thing going on.  The fact that he's a human combined with all that above stuff is another.  The way he looks.  His general attitude.  It all just screams Star Wars to me.  I didn't say it was iron-clad proof of anything.  I just said he reminds me ludicrously of Star Wars for many reasons.  He doesn't fit in right in the ME mythos for me for some reason.  Neither does Jack (she practically fell out of Weopan X from Ultimate X-men IMO.)  I could write a very long explanation for exactly why I don't think they fit in, but no one would read it anyway so I won't bother you with it.  I didn't say everyone had to feel this way.  I'm just saying why I feel this way.

If that explanation won't do for why I don't like Zaeed here's several more:
1. He has WAY less depth than the other characters.
2.  I can't have conversations with him.
3. His story with paragon Shep makes no sense.  There is no way that guy would turn loyal after I botched his twenty year quest for revenge just because I asked him to play nicely with others.
4.  The badass role is already filled by several others on my team who do it way better namely Garrus and Grunt and heck even Jack for that matter.

Actually, I think he's the biggest badass on the team, far more than Grunt or Jack (Garrus is a different archetype: the rogue cop with a heart of gold.) Zaeed doesn't have "issues" and he has experience, and the way he burns his enemy to death rocks. And while he doesn't have a dialogue tree, he's got a ton of dialogue in various missions.

I think I took him with me more than anyone but Garrus on my first run. He feels like exactly the sort of scarred war-veteran you want on your side.

I liked him when playing Paragon, because I could convince him to save the workers and keep him loyal, and he realized we had to be a team to suceed, etc.

Playing Renegade I didn't like him much at all. No matter what you choose he has little respect for the chain of command, or the mission.

So I liked him more when I was 'alturistic, nice shep' Funny that isn't it?

You played too much of different stuff. You can't take him as he is any more...

Zaeed doesn't need presentation or emotional development. If you want a character who's gonna act tough and then troll you for weepy sex, go be a GODAM pansy somewhere else.

Go have a "conversation" with your wannabe toughguy birdface.

Eh, I don't mind how is personality is set up, I just think he's a pretty weak combat character. Everything he can do, Grunt and Garrus can do better.

You sir are aptly named.  Why do people take differing opinions as personal insults?  I don't like Zaeed.  You do.  Great.  Moving on.

@glitter_guld:  You are correct.  I've read/played/watched so much fantasy, sci-fi, and horror at this point that literally everything reminds me of something else.  But 95% of the time I can still see how a thing is unique.  I can even see how Jack is unique.  I actually have come to like Jack.  She grew on my slowly like Sten did.  Zaeed to me is not unique, but that's not the problem.  He's still well constructed even if he is canned.  Sometimes hearing an old story told again is just as entertaining as a new one.  The problem is not Zaeed himself or his story, but that for some reason for me in this case the character, the story, and the setting just don't jive.

I think I'm done now.  I don't really like the guy, but I don't hate him either.  Like I said, he was free.  It's not like I got ripped off or anything, and all this is just my opinion after all.

Imo Jar Jar Binks (Star Wars) is a better character than him. lol

He is my least like character in the series so far. Hardly any interactive conversations, Selfish, Bland... I can go on...

Hah, a Star Wars character rip-off!? HAH!

I loved Zaeed because he reminded me of one of the most interesting characters in Serenity/Firefly, ofc it's Jayne Cobb, and after i heard that lil' conversation two of the crew members were having about The New Canton i literally started laughing and felt l lil' nostalgic about the moment...

"THE HERO OF CANTON THE MAN THEY CALL JAYNEEEEEE!"

If you have no idea what i'm talking about than that's probably the main reason you dislike Zaeed.

Too bad he's a bit shallow compared to the rest of the crew, i would have loved it if he had a thorough conversation tree like the rest of the cast.

And the voice actor is the same dude who played Sarris in Galaxy Quest, how cool is that?

Cheers!

Had him for Soldier steamrolling with Grunt for my 1st playthrough. Played Paragon, on his loyality mission I was "Oh snap, replay incoming, I'm gonna lose him" all the way, but thankfully I managed to do it. After seeing his artwork I just knew he is a must have (shame he doesn't look nowhere close like it). Him and Wrex sure could share some stories, competing for the Most Badass Sidekick Award

I agree, except  I would not mind at all if there was something beyond the plutonic for femsheps. I guess a Kelly type of fling. Oh god, not that I want to see him dancing.  Ok,  I'm going to leave that alone.

Seriously, I wish we could have real conversations with him but I think it's alright they way it is. He is great as a squadmate and I find his character and in mission comments to be more interesting than many of the others.  I hope we get him back for ME3 though I'm not holding my breath.

Zaeed was very helpful when I was playing as a Infiltrator. And from that he grew on me.

You know, you're right. He does remind me of Firefly too. He doesn't fit in ME as well as in Firefly.

Zaeed has his fans. This thread pops up every week

I don't fawn over him but I'm certainly glad to have him on board, as opposed to certain other crew members.

I really dislike Tali. She's a nice girl, but please get off my ship.

Zaeed's now probably one of my favorite team members to use against most enemies, with Legion or before that Miranda. Together they strip shields so fast, and with squad incendiary on my vanguard the exposed enemies will too busy being on fire to care about Zaeed's unboosted health damage. Although he gets straight up +50% damage anyway if you specialize him
