Fallout 3 and Vampire:Bloodlines are worth a try as well. You might also want to try some of the fan-made modules for NWN. Some of them are really good (and x-rated
other rpg games of the same caliber

This is why it was so disappointing. ME1>>>>ME2.
ME2 is the worst game Bioware have done BY FAR, an unembracing, unstimulating shooter, dumbed down for the easily amused in society. (Thanks EA)
I agree with Balerion 84; Deus Ex was an excellent and pioneering game.
Whoever said Fallout isn't an RPG is retarded.
And Lost Odyssey is definitely worth it, if only for the mini stories within the game.
KOTOR, Baldurs Gate, Fable, Jade Empire, Final Fantasy, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion and Zelda: Ocarina should all get a look to see what tickles your fancy.

Star Control 2 is a great one, and also about exploring the galaxy and having adventures. Not strictly an RPG
Gothic 1 and 2 were very good.
Bloodlines.
KOTOR 1 & 2.
I found Witcher, Oblivion, and NWN2 extremely boring, although I did enjoy NWN1.

Gothic 1 and 2 were pretty good. Just avoid Gothic 3 at all costs! It is buggy as hell.
Neverwinter Nights 2 (and especially Mask of the Betrayer) were also some of the best games I have ever played.
Seconded, I died a little inside the day bioware announced they were done with the DND fanchise, but DND had already betrayed me with 4.0.

I disagree with you, ME2 may don't have the same character costumization aspects of ME1 but it still gives you the choices, liberty of choice, etc... Of a RPG game, and ME2 is quite good, as a shooter and as a RPG.
I recommend Fallout 3, Deus Ex (if you don't mind about the graphics) or of course... Final Fantasy.

And Bethesda is on a streak for me, because you could just replace "Fallout 3" with "Oblivion" and the review would fit for that game, too. It was like the silicone breast implants of the RPG world. Bethsoft's making a habit of tossing out pretty-looking games with no semblence of heart or soul. But, hey, I'm a sucker for RPGs, so I'll probably buy the next one, and then kick myself 10 days later when I'm bored with it and playing something better.
As far as other RPGs, as other folks have mentioned, I'd go with Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel (2 was a bit of a letdown at the end, but still a great game). That series is sort of an embryonic foreshadowing of what they do later in the Mass Effect series, and it's terrific. I haven't finished it yet, but The Witcher is pretty fantastic, too. I'm not sure I'd go back any further than that. Those games are still playable from both a technological standpoint and a gameplay one. As much as I loved the Infinity Engine games from a decade ago, still the benchmark for CRPGs in my mind, they're nigh on unplayable for me now. Games have come a long, long, long way in the last 10 years, and I guess I'm spoiled.

there's the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, Divinity 2 Ego Draconis & the Witcher on PC, they're very good. There's also Alpha Protocol but it's only coming on May.
Divinity 2 sucks balls.
The Witcher is fantastic. Risens great too. Your free to try out classic bioware stuff too like kotor oor nwn which has pretty bearable graphics, or the really old stuff, I'm fine with it, but you may have trouble adjusting to the sprites of Baldurs gate.

So true, keginkc. Fallout 3 was such a big letdown... I've been steering clear of Bethesda since they ruined one of the greatest RPG series ever. Oblivion was horrible, too. I couldn't stand the faces.

Yes, its fanastic.

You could also try "King of Dragon Pass", an indie gem which is like a mix of RPG elements with Civilization and strong on the story side (and much choosing to make). It's based on the world of Glorantha, which is my favourite fantasy world, btw. The only problem is that it's a game from 1999 without hardcore 3D gaming in mind, in fact, the images are still there are no animations or real time movement of any kind (the images are beautyful though).

More balanced games: Morrowind, Baldur's Gate I/II, Deus Ex (if you can get it to run and can live with 10 years old graphics), Fallout 1 and 2. Probably Neverwinter Nights 2, although I hated NWN1 and NWN2 was so buggy that I never got beyond chapter 1. Vampire the Masqurade: Bloodlines.
RPG-heavy and less action: Planescape: Torment. Arguably the best CRPG every made. Lot of text, lot of dialog, ancient graphics and very limited combat. There are no armor, no ranged weapons (for the player) and only 1 sword. It's old, but it has a dedicated following of gamers that STILL release mods and patches for it, 10 years later. This FAQ includes details on how to mod the game so that it accepts higher resolutions than 640x480 and has links to unoffical patches that correst a whole host of typos, bugs and scripting errors. Highly recommended.

The Brotherhood questline is the only single saving grace all of Oblivion has. It's the only thing that ever came out of Oblivion/Fallout 3 that was genuinely good.Klystron wrote...
Oblivion is worth playing for the guild quest arcs, especially the Brotherhood. Forget the main storyline, though.

Fallout and oblivion are both very good despite the flack they take on the forums here. You are given tremendous freedom in both games.
Exactly, but you get that freedom at the price of having nothing really matter much. People who really like the Bethesda approach tend to dislike Bio's approach, and vice versa.
I found Morrowind quite dull, except that the world and lore was worth exploring. On that level it was worthwhile -- I followed Torias' recommendation that you just go all-out for exploits, since the combat is dull enough that you don't really want to take it seriously.
I'd play Fallout 1 and 2 before FO3.

I loved the first two so much. Those and Planescape Torment (I'm always naming it, I know) were the only games I found worth playing, as I don't like gaming usually. And I spent years and years away from any serious involvement in games till I found ME and ME2.
